The ember days are twelve days set aside for fasting. Their are four ember weeks, roughly thirteen weeks apart, in which the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are all ember days.

The word "ember" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ymb-ren, a circuit or revolutionin referring to the four-season cycle of feast days.
