Drinking can be a big part of recreationist events and in this the SCA and re-enactors are very similar. Many modern organisations that involve camping tend to be like this to some degree with rare (some would say tedious) exceptions.
Drinking alcohol was a common practise during the Middle Ages partially because of the alcohol reducing the danger of drinking fluids potentially contaminated with germs.
Whilst alcohol is not a compulsory part of recreationist events, it is a common one.
It should be noted that most, if not all, recreationist groups forbid people to fight if they have partaken of alcohol.
