The crotch typically refers to the area where the legs meet. Human generative organs are located here, and in the case of men, are somewhat unprotected. A considerable amount of effort has been spend in armouring the crotch, not only because of its vulnerability, but because the requirements of movement and sitting a horse make the crotch an extremely difficult area to armour effectively without restricting mobility.

SCA combat safety regulations require the protection of the crotch by a jockstrap and cup for all combat activities.

It can also refer to the place where two branches or sticks meet, as in the "crotch of a tree".
