A column is line of men marching abreast, (usually 2, 3 or 4 men abreats in SCA combat.

Columns are almost never used as a battle formation, as they are primarily used to quickly march fighters from on place to another. However, a quick turn to the right ot left can make a long column into a very effective shieldwall.
