The mark was, according to Wikipedia, an English unit of account, rather than a coin as such. Introduced by the Danes, probably around the 10th century CE, it was originally worth one hundred pence. Later, after the Norman Conquest it was revalued at 160 pence, two-thirds of a pound sterling
