Church can mean a building for public, especially Christian worship, or it can mean the institution that runs such buildings.

Prior to the Reformation and the advent of Protestant religion this usually meant the Catholic Church, however after 1517 and the edicts of Martin Luther it could mean any of the Protestant churches as well.

The Jewish equivalent is the Synagogue.
