Christopher Columbus, (Spanish: Cristbal Coln, Italian: Cristoforo Colombo), (1451 - May 20, 1506) was (probably) a Genoese explorer and trader, who crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Americas in 1492 under the flag of Castile (Spain). He had been searching for a new route to the Asian Indies and was convinced he had found it. Columbus was made governor of the new territories and made several more journeys across the Atlantic. While regarded by some as an excellent navigator, he was seen as a poor administrator and was stripped of his governorship in 1500.
