Chestnut refers generally to trees or shrubs of the genus Castanea. It is most often associated with the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa).

The sweet chestnut is a large tree, growing to over twenty metres in height, native to southern Europe and the Middle East. They were introduced to northern Europe in Roman times. The nuts are eaten roasted.
