Chausses are mail defences for the legs.

Chausses appear in the 11th century in an abbreviated form and were more likely to be worn on just the front of the leg. They completely encircled the leg in the 12th century but became more prevalent in the 13th century.

It is necessary to tie chausses below the knee in order to ensure knee movement is kept free.
