Carp refers to several freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae, a family which also includes goldfish andd minnows. The word is most often used to refer to the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). They inhabit slow flowing rivers and warm lakes.

The carp originated in central Asia, and were introduced to Rome, China and Japan in antiquity. They were introduced to England by the 14th century.
