A chunk of territory north of the (current) United States annexed from the indigenous population by the Colonial British, and, later, to stop the Brits killing everyone, also some enterprising French explorers.

Possessed of no medieval significance -- the land at that time belonged unquestionably to the indigenes, who have since been driven out of it, and denied their rights in its development.
