The Beothuk were the native inhabitants of the island of Newfoundland at the time of European contact in the 15th and 16th centuries. Due to disease and conflict with Europeans, they are now extinct. The last Beothuk, Shanawdithit, died of tuberculosis in 1829.

The Beothuk were likely the first Native Americans to meet Europeans, as they (or their ancestors) encountered the Viking settlement of Vinland.
