Oddly enough, a barrel helm is what is says on the packet :: a helm that looks like a barrel. You make it of metal, and cut a hole in to see out of. The you put it on (checking that the hole is reasonably adjacent to your eyes) and get belted on the cranium several times over.
If you're alive after that, it's probably functional.
