Arabic is a Semitic language that is and was widely spoken in the Middle East and northern Africa, especially among Muslim communities. The Koran was written in Classical or Literacy Arabic, which is very similar to the standard form and is the official Islamic language. The earliest evidence is pre-3rd century inscriptions but the 'golden age of literature' developed with Islam in the 7th century.

It is written in the Arabic alphabet.
