Aethelbald was born some time around the year 834 to Aethelwulf and his first wife, Osburga. He helped lead his father's forces to victory at Acleah in 1851. His life took an Oedipal turn in 1856 when he deposed his father and in 1858, after his father had died, married his own widowed mother in law. This marriage was later annulled due to cosanguinity. He died in 1860, to be succeeded by his brother, Aethelbert.
