Beeswax is a hard resinious substance that bees make from the honey they collect. It is maleable and soft above 25 degrees celsius. It takes 7 parts of honey to make 1 part wax, so there's a large amount of work involved for the bees.

The wax burns slow and clear and smells nice, so it has been the choice of candles throughout the ages. It stops water, so is a good water sealant, and hardens leather nicely.
