Talk:Cloth of gold
proof/refernces?
Which particlar cloth of gold?
eg. heavily emboidered gamrents might be called cloth of gold, and would have a substantial weight of gold on them.
But actual woven gold cloth indeed might not be gold at all, but for all periods, places?
There is a cloth made from mollusks called byssus and is also called "cloth of gold" however there was also cloth woven from threadmade of finely beaten gold wound around a core.
Cloth of Gold
Cloth containing metalic gold thread was known as Tissue of Gold not Cloth of Gold which was made from the byssus threads from the PEN MUSSEL.
A lot of people say that, but I'll leave it to someone better qualified than me to refute: http://list.uvm.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0103&L=SCA-GARB&P=R12562&D=0&I=-3&T=0
what I can prove is the existance of very nice samites woven with gold thread. I think this needs to be on the page, even if part of the period did use 'cloth of gold' to refer to shellfish fabric.Tiff
