Wax, often supplied by apiarists, was taken from bee hives, or skeps (essentially portable, man made bee hives). It has several uses:

  • Candles
  • Hardening Cuir Bouilli (you basically bake the wax into the leather. This is a great idea.. although your wonderful armour might not be so good after leaving it out in the sun for a few hours)
  • Casting jewellery
  • Your own medjeeval palm pilot, or wax tablet. It's just a whole lot of meleted wax in a bed of carved out wood so you could write stuff down. The wax is often blackened first with lampblack (a powdered carbon).
  • Hair treatments
  • Facial creams
  • Sealing cheese and eggs for longer storage.
