Scientific method describe a series of steps used by scientists in order to collect data about the world.

It consists of four steps:

  • Observing and describing some phenomena.
  • Developing a hypothesis to explain the phenomena.
  • Making predictions using the hypothesis.
  • Testing the hypothesis via experimentation.

Before the introduction of scientific method, experiments and studies of the natural world might take the form of thought experiments where a hypothesis might be developed based on some observation but not tested.
