Jacob Burckhardt wrote the seminal book on the nineteenth century view of the Renaissance and especially the Italian Renaissance titled The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy.

The entire book is out of print and out of copyright but may be found on the web in a number of places, including here.

The book is considered by many to be very, well, nineteenth century.
