Purple dyes were much prized as few sources of purple were availible. Chief amoung them were shellfish purples (tyrian purple and kermes) which were bright dark purples (perhaps rather more redish in tone than modern purples) and also pale pink/mauve from lichen (orchil), which was much more available, but also much less colourfast. see also period brown.
