Lacing is a long, fine braid used to secure a garment by looping back and forth between lacing eyelets and pulling two edges closed.

Lacing in period was made from braid... these days shoelaces are a good substitute - strong and hardwearing and with aglets already attached to aid in the process of lacing up the eyelets.
