A chain is a series of metal rings interwoven with each other to create a long string of considerable strength.

Small chains of precious metals are often worn for decoration. In the SCA, a large "gold" chain (often brass for economy) is worn by Knights as a sign of fealty.

Chainmaille is an incorrect, out-of-period term for maille.
