Since 1870 Rome has been the capital of Italy, however before that it was the major city in the Papal States. For much of the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was the city of the popes, although some of them headed out to Avignon.

It is a place that is very old, and borrowed much of its early culture from the Greeks.
