A sceptre or scepter is a symbolic ornamental staff held by a ruling monarch, a prominent item of royal regalia.
Some computer games use the word to denote a weapon, a more ornate and decorated mace. So far as is known, in real life the weapon was a weapon, and the ornamental staff merely a signifier of rank.
