Specifically for SCA combat:

A thrusting tip is a sword tip that is slightly padded and has progressive give. On two handed sword or pole weapons they must be 2 inches across and have 2 inches give, and you may not be able to fold the end of the padding over to feel the end of the rattan.

On a single-handed sword, you may use a LPTT - a Low Profile Thrusting Tip. These are the same width as a sword and have less give.
