Removed reference to "Byzantine" as I suspect the original author of this article meant to use it to mean 'characterized by intrigue; scheming or devious'*. Unfortunately, it came across as if the word "Autocrat" originated in Byzantium -- and the OED lists the first occurance as 1803.
- Although why that would be is also unclear.
