Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321) lived in Florence, Italy and wrote many works including The Divine Comedy and The Inferno. Dante was one of the last great medieval scholars, preceding the age of the Renaissance.

I'm sure someone who knows a lot more about his well-published life could write more here, although see the references below.
