When the [[Roman]] [[city]] of [[London]] was abandoned, there was already a [[Christian]] [[church]] there (which would later, under the early Christian kings of Essex, become the Minster, or [[cathedral]], of St.Paul).  Thus when [[English Monarchs|English kings]] established themselves on land beside an [[abbey]] further westwards up the river Thames, this became known as the '''"West Minster"''', by contrast, and the name transferred over to the [[palace]] which they built there, on the river's banks.
