The '''Roman shield''' (scutum) was made by [[laminating]] a rectangular piece of wood into a slight curve. These large [[shield]]s could be held together into a box, called the ''testudo'', or tortoise.

They had a thin band of [[metal]] as an edging and had a horizontal [[grip]] under the the [[metal]] [[boss]].
