Originating with [[sailor]]s that wanted to make something nice for their girlfriends, '''netted lace''' began by using and experimenting with the basic [[netting|net-knotwork]] in beautiful and delicate ways (i.e. finer [[linen]]s rather than coarser netting-twine).

Generally netted lace is done in a circular fashion, with each piece displaying radial symmetry. [[Lace]] of this form is perfect as a "[[snood]]". However, there is no reason why it should not be created in a rectangle - as long as it's structurally sound.
