The '''Beothuk''' were the native inhabitants of the island of [[Newfoundland]] at the time of [[Europe]]an contact in the [[15th century|15th]] and [[16th century|16th centuries]]. Due to [[disease]] and conflict with Europeans, they are now extinct.  The last Beothuk, Shanawdithit, died of tuberculosis in [[1829]].

The Beothuk were likely the first [[Native American|Native Americans]] to meet Europeans, as they (or their ancestors) encountered the [[Viking]] settlement of [[Vinland]].
