A '''back plate''' is a (generally single piece) [[plate]] defence for the back that pairs with a [[breastplate]]. They appear from about 1370 onwards and are phased out during the [[17th century]].

The combination of back plate and [[breastplate]] is sometimes referred to as a ''back and breast''.
