An [[Abbey]] is a [[Christian]] [[monastery]] governed by an [[Abbot]] or [[Abbess]]. It is effectively the same as a priory, except that the latter is governed by a prior.

In [[England]] many abbeys were destroyed in the [[16th century]] when [[Henry VIII]] enacted the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
