Hello an welcome to Cunnan!

We usually suggest new users tell us a bit about themselves on their user page but you've beaten us to it.

Good work on your edits so far. We all hope you'll stay a while and help us improve Cunnan's information.
Thanks -- I'm a tech support guy and this is a holiday up here in Canada, so I've got lots of free time. Sorry about the multiple edits on the various things I've posted -- I'm still getting the hang of this.
Also thanks for kicking off the "religion" threads -- I couldn't think of a way that wasn't likely to be divisive, but you seem to have managed a very balanced approach. --Simoncursitor 14:04, 20 Oct 2005 (CDT)

Not silliness -- "Viking" was indeed a verb-form in their language, a raid was a "vike" or "vyke". If it were not so, the word would never have entered "English", for Anglish, Saxon or Celtic it is not. --Simoncursitor 02:20, 2 Nov 2005 (CST)
Centre Boss Shields
I would be interested in looking at your shield article when it is ready. I have just finshed acquiring all the materials for my new centre boss this weekend (I was short of leather). Within the next fortnight I will have finished it as I need it for Easter and it will get a bit of a workout. I shall let you know how it goes.--User 144 23:33, 25 Mar 2006 (CST)
I have been using the planked, leather covered flat shield for a year now. It has proven quite robust. Even through display fighting, it has come away free of splitting. User 144 23:33, 30 Mar 2007 (CST)
Vandalism
Corrected a small vandalism spree by User:208.182.75.11 on April 13/06. Probably some eight-year-old somewhere, because I can't see an adult using the word "poop" that much.
As it has no text in it, I was considering deleting it, but I wondered whether this was simply a case of an "escaped edit".
Back Again.
Re your message -- I suggest taking this to Village Pump. I ws made a sysop (I think) for submitting articles and for spotting a couple of vandals. I use the powers sparingly, but now I have learned the roll-back idea, I try to do what I can to reverse vandalism. Something can probably be done to block the domain (or a part of it), but the problem is that this might also block out innocent users.
Sorry to be "unhelpful" -- Simoncursitor 19:00, 25 Apr 2006 (EST)

On the other hand both of these addresses have not posted since the cat episode, which I believe is about a week old. They have probably had their fun and left. Thank you for your efforts in fixing up their primitive fun. If they do it again I think that we should block them for a significant time (ie long enough for them to forget about it and get bored).--User 144 19:16, 25 Apr 2006 (EST)
Yeah, kind of quiet here. Post-Easter-event enthusiasm is keeping me going on some projects but I didn't want to start a new sewing one and I'm saving my current one for Friday night Curry and Sewing nights. I like categories. I think they increase the usuability of Cunnan--User 144 08:42, 30 Apr 2006 (EST)
You are now a sysop
Congratulations, you are now a sysop.

This is a little delayed because, with the exception of User144, those of us who were meant to be paying attention weren't. Thanks for all your editing and help with removing spam.

In practical terms being a sysop means you can rollback edits, block users and edit protected pages. This should make a few things easier for you. If you have any questions just let me know. Conrad Leviston 00:26, 3 May 2006 (EST)
P.S. No, it was not you post about the relative merits of box and cup that did it. If anything that was almost a deal breaker. :)

Damascus (place)
Damascus is the capital city of Syria] and has been inhabited for over 10000 years. The city was featured prominantly during the Crusades and also known for the production of high quality swords made from the coverted Damascus steel from between 100 and 1700.

Damascus Steel
Damascus steel refers to a steel of high quality that was both flexible and hard. It is usually refers to blades made in this manner which produces a pattern similar to that of pattern-welded blades.

The actual process has been lost and attempts to recreate the process have been very variable with some reproducing the pattern and others similar properties. There is some current research indicating that small amounts of vanadium in the original ore (which is now depleted) may have contributed significantly to the quality of the steel.

There are a number of reproduction steels that appear similar superficially but actually are more cosmetic that any real attempt to recreate the steel despite being labelled as such (eg pattern welded swords that are then acid etched are sometime sold as Dasmascus blades. Damascened steel is another term for the same process.
61.88.131.147https://cunnan.lochac.sca.org/index.php?title=Armet&diff=31879Armet2007-03-21T23:32:32Z
61.88.131.147:

An armet is a closely fitting helmet used in the 15th and 16th centuries. This helmet encloses the entire head, and has a hinged visor could be opened or closed to cover the wearer's face.

Hammer (tool)
A hammer is composed of a shaft and a head, assembled in a 'T' formation.

The shaft (generally of wood) fits between the user's hand and the hammer's head. It is what you grab to use the hammer. The longer the shaft, the more force can be exterted by the head, but at the same time, the slower the hammer becomes to use.

The head (generally made of metal or (in primitive societies) of stone) is what does the striking -- the striking surface with generally be flat or slightly convex. There may be a second striking surface on the other side of the 'T', either of the same size and shape, or designed differently, for a different striking effect.

Hammer (weapon)
The hammer was eventually modified for use in combat. This is a war-hammer or a maul. Like the tool, a war-hammer could be used for gripping and striking (being as how most plate armour was hammered metal, a hammer could do good a deal to deform a plate), even against mail, which the hammer deformed inward, causing it to transmit the blow to the armour and flesh underneath. Or they could be thrown, as a high-mass blunt-impact missile, over short distances. They could be mounted on longer shafts, in the manner of a two-handed weapon, when although they were slower, they packed a substantially heavier impact. As such they were also useful for work against structures -- doors, stone walls, etc.

Anno Domine (Latin): "In the year of our Lord" which is an abbreviated form of the original Anno Domini Nostri Iesu Christi. It is often abbreviated as "A.D."

A method of marking time using the number of years since the birth of Jesus Christ.
The years before the birth of Christ are designated "Before Christ", or "B.C." This system was developed in the 525 (by the same calendar) but was not widely adopted until the 8th century.

Interestingly, due to the inaccuracies of historical record keeping from that period, Christ is now thought to have been born in the year 2 C.E. by our calendar.

Recognizing the fact that not all people in the world are Christian, most archaeologists and historians now use C.E. ("Of the Common Era"), and B.C.E. ("Before the Common Era").

Hose are a period item of clothing used for keeping the legs warm. Often made out of a linen or wool.
Hose were bias-cut, so if patterned, diagonal stripes and diagonal check or plaids would be most common. Sometimes hose had leather soles sewn on to them, so you didn't have to wear shoes (you can do this to modern socks too). Various devices including garters and attachments to a belt or upper garment (points) were used to stop hose falling down.

During the 14th century and earlier hose would be made of two separate legs. These might be rolled down during hard labour. Later during the 15th century hose became a one piece garment with an attached codpiece. One piece hose were pointed to a doublet or pourpoint. Hose are depcited as tightfitting, so baggy hose are inappropriate.

You can also make woollen scoggers, which are period arm warmers! (Ask Mistress Margie of Glenmore about these).

Hose in Re-Enactment
Hose are typically made of wool although some use a blend to try to get a more elastic fit. Modern hose typically have a sheen to them that indicates modern materials and thus are frowned upon by re-enactors and shunned by living historians.

In Australia there is a perception that hose aren't very blokey and consequently there are few high medieval or renaissance reenactment groups, although this is beginning to change.

Hose in the SCA
There are some modern hose-like items that can be worn, and look fairly close to period hose.
