Lots of [[dye]]s make [[period]] yellows - [[weld]], dyer's greenweed, [[saffron]], [[marigold]], [[tansy]] and other substances. Not all of them were very colourfast, so [[weld]] and [[dyer's greenweed]] were prized because they made a good clear yellow that was easily grown and harvested and didn't fade much.

Yeasts are a unicellular [[fungi]], and grow in lots of different places. Yeasts are found on wide variety of plant leaves and flowers, in soil, in water and in your gut. They are partly responsible for your body odour, and yes, thrush was most certainly period (''Candida albicans'' causes that). They're used as a raising agent in [[cooking]] and it makes your [[brew]] [[ferment]] to produce ethanol. Yeasts are also very good for you, and are rich in folic acid (good for pregnant women), vitamin B and niacin.

''Saccharomyces cerevisiae'' is the species of yeast most commonly used in your [[brewing]] and [[bread]] baking. They ferment [[rice]], [[wheat]], [[corn]] and [[barley]] [[sugar]]s. The yeasts that ferment your wine are commonly found on the plants in the [[vineyard]] anyway. It's believed that no one used to intentionally used to add yeast in the goode olde days, but because grows everywhere it would breed in the cracks of the brewing barrels and other brewing equipment. Yeasts don't particularly like being heated above about 40C and will tend to start to die at about this temperature.

Update:

Wood is a by product of [[tree]]s. It is mostly made up of [[water]], cellulose and lignun. Water and cellulose are the soft squidgy bits, whilst lignun is the hard bit. If you hit a tree whilst in possession of a reasonable amount of kinetic energy it is the lignun that causes the injury, not the water or the cellulose.

Wood is very useful, as it is combustible, good for [[construction]] and comparing relative displacement in [[witch trial]]s.

An annual Old World plant (Isatis tinctoria) in the mustard family, formerly cultivated for its leaves that yield a [[blue dye]], one of the most valuable [[dyestuff]]s. (or a good [[green dye]] when combined with a [[yellow dye]]). Said to have mild hallucinogenic properties, and usually mixed with other psychoactive substances when used as body paint (such as when going into [[war]]). Is absorbed through the skin.

Also known as the 'victor'.

The winner is the person who defeats their opponent, often in combat. Winning in the SCA can often lead to a person becoming [[King]], a [[barony]] claiming "ownership" over another barony after [[war]], or a fighter "winning" another's [[consort]].

There are many ways of being competitive in the SCA. In arts and sciences, a person may win several A&S competitions, thus becoming recognised by all the Laurels and then eventually becoming a [[laurel]] themselves.

A [[Stormhold]] event held every year, usually on the first Saturday of December. There is usually a [[chivalric weapon]]s [[tourney]], and a ransom melee followed by an elaborate feast with an [[early period]] theme. It is one of the two "high" events held annually in Stormhold, the other being Winter Feast.

It's the type of event that people who don't attend SCA events often come out of the woodwork for, and people wear try to wear their best [[garb]], especially Angevin garb. It's just another excuse to make another piece of garb.

The feast honours the memory of William Marshal, a man who was barely even noble, but who rose to become one of the most powerful people in the Angevin world. His skill at arms was one source of his reknown, being particularly successful at Tourney. He is often held up to be a shining example of chivalry, but some historians claim that the evidence indicates that he was ruthless, pragmatic and manipulative.

Mostly only later period dances can by recreated, since we have instructions for them.(although the instructions are abbout as clear as period recepies - certain things are assumed to be known by everyone).

These people are often from the consort of their [[fighter]]s, or of the same [[household]] or group as the [[fighters]]. There have been many ingenious ways developed of getting water to weary fighters. Some carry large water barrels carried on their backs with plastic tubing for straws, others carry a box with compartments filled with smaller watterbottles, each bearing the name of the fighter who the bottle belongs to.

The word 'University' is derived from the [[Latin]] word for ''[[guild]]''. The church established schools with the purpose of educating pepole in a particular profession (a non-trade profession), and then universities arose purely for ''higher education''. In [[period]], it was mostly [[church]]es or courts who had the better [[book]] collections of the times, so therefore those involved with these institutions (who were mostly those with lots of [[money]]) therefore had access to higher education. The first university, Al-Azhar, was founded in Cairo, [[Egypt]] in 970BC, which was followed up with more being founded predominently in [[Italy]], [[France]], [[England]] and [[Spain]] (during the [[1100]]s) and later in [[Germany]] and [[Austria]] ([[1300]]s). They had various faculties, as they do today.

In the [[SCA]], a University can be a branch of the society and is referred to as a ''[[college]]''. Universities are popular recruitment bases for the [[Shire]]/[[Barony]] in which the College lies.

The [[SCA]] has many '''traditions'''. Some are as simple as reverancing (bowing/curtseying) when you pass in front of the [[throne]]s (whether or not they are occupied), others are a little more complex. In the [[West]], and now [[Lochac]] (as a scion of the West) it is often said that [[Law]]s can be changed, but tradition is immutable. Even so, some traditions drift out of favour, and new ones emerge all the time.

Some things should be thought of as [[fads]] not traditions (even if something lasts a few years it may just be a passing thing).
