Mundane: A lot has changed in my life since I last updated this page about four years ago. I'm getting ready to move to North Carolina ([[Kingdom of Atlantia|Atlantia]]) from Missouri ([[Kingdom of Calontir|Calontir]]), where I've spent almost the past four years after leaving Colorado ([[Kingdom of the Outlands|Outlands]]). There were no SCA groups even remotely close, as we opted for a very rural lifestyle.

I'm hoping that Seareach will provide an opportunity to get back into the SCA as it's been about six years since I've attended an event, and I miss it. Most of the other previous information about my mundane adventures is sorely out of date, but the history tab will show what I've been up to previously. The Rose and Crowne is, as is my wholesale business, and just about everything else.
The '''Kingdom of Atlantia''' covers the [[U.S.|American]] states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia.

== History ==

Atlantia became a [[Principality]] of the [[Kingdom of the East]] in [[A.S. XII]]. Having gained the right to become an independent [[Kingdom]], the first [[Crown Tourney]] was won by [[Michael of Bedford]], who was at that time King of the East. Atlantia became a Kingdom in May, [[A.S. XVI]] (1981) and Michael was [[crown]]ed as Atlantia's first [[King]] by his successor to the Kingdom of the East, Sigfried.

== Baronies and Shires of Atlantia ==

Atlantia covers a great deal of territory, encompassing 26 [[Barony|Baronies]], [[Shire|Shires]], and [[Stronghold|Strongholds]], with an additional 24 [[Canton]]s and [[College]]s. A partial listing of the [[Groups of Atlantia|groups]] is available.
== Events ==
* '''Kingdom Crusades''' is where the Kingdom of Atlantia battles the [[Kingdom of the East]]. Held in October in Maryland. More information can be found at http://crusades.eastkingdom.org/

* Atlantia (specifically the [[Barony of Lochmere]]) was the site of the 2005 [[Known World Academy of the Rapier]].

*In June 2011, Atlantia will host the Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium

== [[Award]]s and Honors ==

The Kingdom of Atlantia currently has twenty two awards and orders active, and a further three orders which have been closed. For the purposes of the [[Order of Precedence]] the current orders are split into three groups: Orders of High Merit, Orders of Merit and Kingdom Orders and Awards. Orders of High Merit bestow a ranking between that of Landed [[Baron]]age and a [[Grant of Arms]]. Orders of Merit bestow a ranking between that of a Grant of Arms and a Court Baronage. The remaining Kingdom Orders and Awards bestow no precedence.

Having become a [[Kingdom]] in September [[A.S. XXXII]], '''Æthelmearc''' is the fifteenth oldest in the [[Known World]]. Geographically it consists of West Virginia, Western & Central Pennsylvania, and Western & Central New York.

==History==

As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the [[Pennsic War]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Midrealm]]. Eventually, the [http://www.aethelmearc.org/pennsictreaty.shtml Pennsic Treaty] was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and [[Æthelmearc War Practice]], held on the same site as [[Pennsic]].

==Groups==
Æthelmearc is home to [[Myrkfaelinn]], the only Independent [[Dominion]] in the [[SCA]]. The [[Board of Directors]] ruled that they owed [[fealty]] to no [[king]], as their [[charter]] mentioned the then-king of the [[East Kingdom|East]] by name.

The [[barony|Baronies]] of Æthelmearc include: [[Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands]], [[Barony of the Rhydderich Hael]], [[Barony of Thescorre]], [[Barony of Blackstone Mountain]], [[Barony of St. Swithin's Bog]], [[Barony of Delftwood]], and [[Barony of the Endless Hills]].

* [[Groups of Æthelmearc]]

==Rulers==

The King and Queen of Æthelmearc are chosen biannually in either the [[Spring Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Spring Crown Tourney]], held in May, or the [[Fall Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Fall Crown Tourney]], held in October. They are then crowned some months later at the [[Fall Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Fall Coronation]] in September or the [[Spring Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Spring Coronation]] in April respectively. All entrants in the Crown Tournament must be at least 18 years of age and have been a subject of Æthelmearc for at least one year. The tourney is usually fought as a [[double elimination]] tournament, although the format may be altered if there are 16 or fewer fighters in the list.

The current King and Queen of Æthelmearc are Maynard von dem Steine and Liadain ni Dheirdre Chaomhanaigh.

* [[Past rulers of Æthelmearc]]

==Events==

Aside from crown tournaments and coronations, major events held by Æthelmearc are:

* [[Pennsic]]
* [[Twelfth Night (Æthelmearc)|Twelfth Night]]
* [[Æthelmearc Academy]]
* The Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon
* [[Æthelmearc War Practice]]

==Awards==

Aside from the standard [[Society level award]]s Æthelmearc has three tiers of awards. The Orders of High Merit, which convey a [[Grant of Arms]], the Orders of Merit, which convey an [[Award of Arms]] and the non-armigerous awards.

The [http://www.sca.org/awards/aten.html awards] given by Æthelmearc can be found on Mistress Jessa's excellent page.

===Laurel Sovereign of Arms===
I was looking at the page that redirects for [[Laurel]] and noticed that the [[Laurel Sovereign of Arms]] is in a page bound with the [[College of Arms]]. Might it be more beneficial to do a dedicated page for Laurel instead of being tied in with the College? [[User:Donngal|Donngal]] 16:37, 22 July 2010 (EST)
* Sure, since the [[Principal Herald]] page is now more substantive. I would make sure that [[Laurel]] redirects to [[Order of the Laurel]] with a disambiguation at the top for [[Laurel Sovereign of Arms]]. The page for LSofA should mention the [[SCA]] [[College of Arms]]. One of the pages should mention any historical links to similar ranks/titles in the RL Colleges, e.g. [[Garter King of Arms]], [[Lyons King of Arms]]
=== The Illegible Vandals ===
First it was the Ampersand Bandits. Now we have new class of vandals with a different MO - the Illegible Vandals! We have been getting unknown people adding just one word consisting of 8-10 characters to a range of pages. I believe the choice of characters is random because I don't recognise anything that I would find in any of my dictionaries. So the vandalism is pretty pointless. As far as I can work out, the same "user" has never struck more than once. Wierd. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 13:39, 27 September 2007 (EST)
:Alas, we're now seeing several articles vandalized by a single IP. It's the sheer volume of IPs involved that concerns me -- we've been hit pretty hard over the last week. Kudos on everyone helping to stem the tide! [[User:Paul Matisz|Paul Matisz]] 19:05EDT 02 Oct 07

:Yeah, I have since noticed repeat offenders. The thing that gets me is the fact that there seems to be no reason for these attacks. If they were all concentrated at particular times, then I could believe that it is was just an attempt at "denial of service" but there aren't enough of them at any one time for that. Other than restricting editing to logged in members, I can't see how any system can automatically prevent the Illegible Vandals. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 09:19, 3 October 2007 (EST)

:On 04 Oct between 10:39 and 17:08 some twenty articles were vandalized by these jerks. In some cases, the same article was vandalized numerous times. ===A Note on Vandals and Newcomers===
I despise vandals. Vandalism to Cunnan articles will be quickly corrected and the vandal's IP outright banned for a an appropriate length of time. Be aware that my definition of "an appropriate length of time" is ''inversely'' proportional to the amount of caffeine in my bloodstream.

I encourage anyone interested in making legitimate changes to Cunnan articles to make a user profile -- it's always nice to have new people in our community, and it makes it a lot easier to weed out the vandalism. [[user:Paul Matisz|Paul Matisz]] 09:51EDT 28 Sept 07
=== Registration is now required for edits ===
Hello all,
I've been away from Cunnan for a long time as I've been busy with uni. I've read everyone's comments regarding the vandals and have looked at the mess they've been making recently.

Anonymous edits are no longer allowed. Hopefully they can be enabled again later after I've looked at other possible solutions.
::Putting in my 2 cents/pence, I noticed that on other wiki's that made this tough choice, those inspired enough to contribute didn't mind signing in, and that usually less than 10% of anonymous edits are valid. This may not have been the case here, but this step does greatly reduce the vandalism and, in my opinion at least, makes Cunan a better place. --[[User:ThorgrimrGunnarrsson|Thorgrimr of Dragonsspine]] 09:50, 16 December 2007 (EST)
=== Personal details ===
Pages have been created for SCA Contacts for various areas of Europe. While I prefer the information to be on the country's or kingdom's page, I have concerns about the address and phone details being put anywhere on Cunnan. They are far less likely to be updated regularly and I would much prefer this sort of personal data to be on the group's homepage outside of Cunnan. What do you guys think?
=== Applicability Question ===

See these Caidan Tourney results: http://wiki.caid-commons.org/index.php/Results

Has Cunnan evolved so far away from its St Monica/Lochac roots that setting up a section under Kingdom of Lochac to support something like the above (but for Lochac) would be a no-go these days? I refer to Village pump discussions mid-2007 on culling some SCA-specific stuff that was seen mainly as ego-boo.

Or would it be fair enough? A wiki is a very good way to maintain this sort of thing; the question is whether we need to set up a whole new one, or use the resource that already exists, but which may no longer be appropriate. (Or, indeed, whether Cunnan would be open to any Kingdoms which wished to use it so).
=== Templates ===
Greetings all. I have been working with learning the language of templates in MediaWiki and have copied one over from Wikipedia, [[Template:Information]] for image files. However, there seems to be a bit of markup that isn't working correctly, as can be seen in <noinclude>[[:Image:Thomas_Hawley_Clarenceux_King_of_Arms.jpg]]</noinclude>. If someone can fix this and explain in detail how they went about fixing it, I'd like to be able to fix broken templates myself. Thanks! --[[User:Averykrouse|Tobias Morgan]] 13:45, 24 September 2008 (EST)
* I'm sorry but I don't know what error you are talking about. How about you use the [[Cunnan:sandbox]] to set up some examples and describe what you were expecting to happen and what has happened. I suspect it might be that Cunnan's MediaWiki version hasn't been updated for 3 or more months. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 09:14, 25 September 2008 (EST)
** The problem using the sandbox is that the template is primarily used in the Image namespace. If you clickthrough to the Image page listed above then go down to the information section, you can see that it looks odd and cluttered, with bad markup. Whereas if you go to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thomas_Hawley_Clarenceux_King_of_Arms.jpg original image on Wikipedia] and look at the information section, it's much cleaner. --[[User:Averykrouse|Tobias Morgan]] 12:10, 25 September 2008 (EST)
=== Personas and households ===
This year has been a quiet one for [[Cunnan]] but an old issue has had to enforced by me as a moderator a few times - that Cunnan is not an archive of pages describing [[SCA]] [[persona]]s (see [http://cunnan.sca.org.au/wiki/Cunnan:Old_Village_pump_discussions_%28moved_2007%29#What_do_to_with_Category:people_.28SCA.29.3F Village Pump 2007]), but we do allow pages on SCA [[group]]s like [[household]]s. Unfortunately, sometimes the household pages contain a lot of details on their members and things that are more specific to the individual than the household.

Sorry to those whose pages I mention here but I need examples. Firstly, [[House Fettered Fleur]]. I have editted this page a few times to makes its format match those of other pages. It had a paragraph on one of the leading members which mainly discussed and promoted her SCA-related business interests. Since I could not see how this related to the household, I treated it as advertising and deleted the text. A page had also been created for another of the household's leaders Menken but I changed that to [[User:Menken|<nowiki>[[User:Menken]]</nowiki>]] since he was the one had just edited it.

More recently, a page was created for the [[Natt Sang]] household. This includes a descriptive paragraph for each member that mentions their general character, how they like to participate in the SCA and their musical skills, but no more. I have reformatted that but not deleted any content.

My question to the community (and especially the mods) is whether Natt Sang is saying too much. Small households sometimes say a little about the roles and habits of their members, but generally as appendages to a list, e.g. [[House Reverie]], like a standard SCA [[regnum]]. Sometimes little is said about memebers at all e.g. [[House Awesome]]. Bigger households have simply too many members to list them all.

So should Natt Sang's member details be abbreviated to something like the following?
: '''Lady Rhyslyn of Soundstream:'''
:* ''Instruments:'' celtic flute, Irish whistle, celtic harp, guitar, bass, singing.
:* ''Roles:'' Husmor, Emmisarian, seamstress.

If not, then should it be editted in any other way?

- [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 18:25, 1 November 2009 (EST)

* Recent editting has brought to light two more persona pages that do not seem to qualify for inclusion: [[Randal Sinclair Hawkins]] and [[Kari Kyst]]. While they seem to have been great people and have been duly recognised in awards for their contribution to the SCA, nothing in their description indicates that they have played a extremely significant role in the development or history of the SCA or their kingdom. All edits so far have been done by [[User:Rohesia|Rohesia]] and [[User:Donngal|Donngal]] and I don't know whether these editors are also Randal and Kari. If so, then these descriptions should be moved to their User pages.

:If there are no objections in the coming weeks, I will delete those two pages.

: I have since also noted [[Logan Ebonwoulfe]]. He certainly seems moreso a person of great note if he is included in an outside publication, but I know nothing about this Warlords card game. What do others think about keeping a page active on him?

:- [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 10:37, 20 November 2009 (EST)

* A new one to consider - [[Michael of Bedford]]. 10 times a [[king]], first King of [[Atlantia]], [[Laurel]], [[Pelican]], [[Knight]]. But is that enough to qualify him for inclusion? Did he introduce something that is widely used in the SCA? Is he known to all in the Society? Is he known outside of the society? - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 10:18, 23 November 2009 (EST)

**I've been thinking on this subject a bit and trying to figure out a good rule of thumb. As a first pass: if the page consists of a simple list of awards, or even a few simple lists, that's probably not enough. An explanation ''should'' be needed. For example, the page for [[Cariadoc of the Bow]] doesn't list his awards, rather it gives his accomplishments with appropriate explanation and links. (Full disclosure - I created the page so I like the format, but I don't actually know His Grace.) With respect to Michael of Bedford's ''page'', it's just a list of awards, which I'd suggest is inadequate. There may be other information which could be added to the page to make it clear that the page should remain, but ''as written'' I don't think the page works. [[User:AlexandreDavigne|AlexandreDavigne]] 00:14, 24 November 2009 (EST)
*** That sounds fair enough. Then it would just be down to us to decide whether the accomplishments are sufficient. Anyone else have a view? - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 10:13, 30 November 2009 (EST)
=== Herbs ===
Would it be possible to merge the [[herb]] pages (e.g. [[borage]]) with their page of historical quotes (e.g. [[borage (Maplet)]])? I think having all those extra pages is superfluous especially seeing as most of the quote pages are only a few lines long. Could they be added to the end of the original herb page with a new heading instead?

* The idea with these entries is that they can be accessed either via the herb, or through the book title, so that one can browse the entries as one would a book. If you look at [[A Greene Forest]] and [[Askham's Herbal]] you will realise that merging these pages involves an awful lot of work for dubious benefit.
The '''raven''' is the ubiquitous jet-black [[bird]] of [[Europe]] and [[North America]], and are known throughout in history and lore. In [[Norse]] [[mythology]], ''Hugin'' and ''Munin'' are [[pet]]s and [[servant]]s of [[Odin]]. The success of the [[England|English]] [[monarchy]] has been tied to the presence of ravens at the [[Tower of London]], and you can see them there to this day. Because of their status in history and their modern [[goth]] connotations, ravens are a popular charge in [[SCA]] [[heraldry]].

[[Image:owl.jpg|right|150px]]
The '''owl''' is a nocturnal [[bird]] of prey, known for its silent flight, distinctive "whooo" call, and large, front-set eyes.

In [[medieval]] [[bestiary|bestiaries]] and [[literature]], the owl is often given an unkind treatment, associated with darkness, ruins, and [[grave]]s.

From [[Chaucer]], '''The Squire's Tale''':
:''In which were painted all these false fowls,''
:''As be these tidifes, tercelets, and owls;''

Owls get a more fair treatment in later [[period]]. From a [[17th century]] [[drinking]] [[song]] that is also a popular [[SCA]] [[madrigal]]:
:''Of all the birds that ever I see,''
:''The owl is the fairest in her degree.''

[[Image:rabbit.jpg|right|150px]]
A '''rabbit''' is a small herbiverous quadruped, generally living under ground in burrowed tunnel-systems. Introduced to [[England]] by the [[Rome|Romans]], rabbits then died out after the Romans left England. They were then re-introduced from [[France]] after the [[Norman Conquest]], and the [[Domesday Book]] records established warrens of rabbits as a bankable resource of the [[king]]. They have always been seen as ready source of [[food]] and [[fur]], provided you can [[hunting|catch them]].

Commonly anthropomorphised, even in [[period]], as cunning little blighters always after people's food, they also have a reputation for rapid multiplication.
First rabbit: ''There are a pack of wolves coming''.
Second rabbit: ''Quick -- down this hole -- give it ten minutes and we can come out and surround them!''.

Commonly alluded to as "bunnies" or "coneys" (but, apparently, not as "cunnies") they are also supposed to be part of the inspiration behind the ''hobbit'' of recent [[legend]]s.

[[Image:elephant.jpg|right|150px]]
The '''elephant''' is a large quadruped with a [[leather]]y hide and a prominent proboscis or ''trunk''. It exists in two species, one in [[Africa]], the other in [[Asia]].

In the [[classical]] period the Asian elephant was known only locally; the African, however, achieved fame and prominence when the Cathaginian adventurer [[Hannibal]] obtained a supply (presumably from trans-Saharan sources) with which he mounted an invasion of [[Roman]] [[Spain]], and then, via the Alps, of [[Italy]]. All but one of his elephants died, of swamp fever, before he attacked [[Rome]], but the "mighty Roman Republic" had learned of elephants, and of the reticence of [[cavalry]] to approach them, and Roman generals thereafter lusted for elephant troops with which to cow their foes.

In the [[medieval]] period, the elephant was at the same time a "familiar" shape from [[Roman Empire|Imperial Roman]] days, and an exotic luxury, given the difficulty of actually obtaining one. An elephant was supposed to be autopsied around the early-[[16th century]].

==Elephants in Heraldry==
The [[heraldic]] elephant was uncommon in period, and was often depicted supporting a [[tower]] on its back.
In [[SCA]] heraldry the presence or absence of the a tower does not constitute a [[point of difference]], even if specifically blazoned.

In the [[Kingdom of Ealdormere]] and especially the [[Barony of Rising Waters]] depictions of elephants are associated with the late Baroness [[Fionnadh Averylle O'Connor of Maidenhead]], and tend not to be used on arms, out of respect for that lady.

[[Image:wolf.jpg|right|150px]]
The '''wolf''' is a [[carnivore|carnivorous]] mammal that looks like a large [[dog]]. A wolf is a moderately common [[heraldic]] [[charge]].

Once common in [[medieval]] [[Europe]] they are now mostly gone. The last wolves disappeared from [[England|English]] lands since the [[medieval]] era and the last wolf in [[Scotland]] was shot in 1745.

Wolves [[hunt]] in small hierarchical 'packs', led generally by an "Alpha Male". Packs will establish their own territory and will normally only hunt outside this when in specific and immediate pursuit of a prey.
The escallop is seen frequently through the [[Middle Ages]], both as a [[charge|heraldic charge]] and a religious symbol. The scallop shell is the [[pilgrimage|pilgrim]] [[badge]] given to those who visit the shrine of St. James of Compostella in [[Spain]].
The '''phoenix''' is a [[bird]] from Greek mythology, which was consumed in flames, but rose from its own ashes.<br>
They (or the Egyptians) believed that it lived for one hundred years, then laid an egg, which it then hatched by immolating itself.<br>
This is (probably) also the origin of the Russian firebird legend.

In [[heraldry]] the phoenix is [[emblazon]]ed as [[displayed]] and with flames by default. Modern heralds emblazon the phoenix as a demi-[[eagle]].
== Topics ==

=== The Illegible Vandals ===

Given the randomness I suspect this may be some kind of bot or virus... is there any way to defend against them? [[User:Paul Matisz|Paul Matisz]] 17:15EDT 04 Oct 07

: Attacks today from three different IP addresses from 87.101.244.* . I think we might be able to put a filter on that for a few months. Tobin? Unfortunately, there seems no clear pattern to any of the other addresses. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 13:09, 9 October 2007 (EST)

There will also be a software upgrade in the next few weeks.

[[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 12:17, 25 November 2007 (EST)

:Thanks for that Tobin. It's a shame that this has been needed, but all that rolling back was getting quite tiresome, and I wasn't one of those who was doing most of the work. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 23:25, 25 November 2007 (EST)

: I concur: thank you for taking the (hard) decision -- it hurt me to the heart to see our good work mangled in this way. -- [[User:Simoncursitor|Simoncursitor]] 19:43, 26 November 2007 (EST)

The '''Renaissance''' was a [[cultural movement]] and time period in the [[History of Europe]], considered to mark the end of the [[Middle Ages]]. The Renaissance is usually considered to have begun in the [[14th century]] in Italy and the [[16th century]] in northern [[Europe]].
It is also known as "'''Rinascimento'''" (in Italian).

The following article discusses the '''Renaissance''' in its most traditional form, as a cultural and scientific rebirth that began in [[14th century]] [[Italy]], where one of its main centers was [[Florence, Italy]], and then spread throughout Europe. In [[science]], [[theology]], [[literature]] and [[art]], the Renaissance began with a rediscovery of and focus on older Greek texts which had disappeared from the West in the latter years of the [[Roman Empire]].

"Renaissance" is a [[French]] word that literally means ''rebirth''. This name has been historically used in contrast to the '''[[Dark Ages]]''', a term coined by [[Petrarch]] to refer to what we now call the Middle Ages. Following Petrarch's lead, the term had long been considered appropriate because during the Renaissance, the [[literature]] and culture of the ancient civilizations of [[Greece]] and [[Rome]] were adopted by scholars and artists in Italy, and widely disseminated through [[printing]].

The term '''renaissance''' was probably first applied to this period of history by the Florentine painter [[Vasari]] in around 1550. [[Vasari]] used the term ''Renaissance'' to describe the changes in the world of [[art]] that occurred during that time. Many people today still make the mistake of identifying the renaissance as purely an artistic movement.

More properly, the '''renaissance''' was a movement that embodied both culture, thought, and especially learning. The '''renaissance''' itself can be identified with the rise of [[Humanism]] which began in Italy with authors such as [[Boccaccio]] and [[Petrarch]] in the [[14th century]] and ran through the [[15th century]] with [[Erasmus]] and many others, and into the [[High Renaissance]] period of the [[16th century]] when [[Mannerism]] became prevalent.

Towards the end of the Renaissance, scientists increasingly began to reject [[Greek]] (and biblical) sources in favor of new discoveries. Theologians continued to focus on the [[Greek]], as well as on the relatively new study [[Hebrew]] and [[Aramaic]]. The second half of the Renaissance is also the period of the [[Reformation]], although it could be argued that the conflict between [[Humanism]] and [[Scholasticism]], which was very much the footprint of the Renaissance, was also the starting point for the [[Reformation]]. In any case, the Renaissance and [[Reformation]] overlapped fairly heavily if you were to take a strict time-period viewpoint.

Rinascimento is also considered as a sort of natural evolution of italian [[Umanesimo]].

During the last quarter of the 20th century, however, more and more scholars began to take a view that the '''Renaissance''' was perhaps only one of many such movements. This was in large part due to the work of historians like [[Charles H. Haskins]], who made convincing cases for a "Renaissance of the 12th century," as well as by historians arguing for a "[[Carolingian renaissance]]." Both of these concepts are now accepted by the scholarly community at large; as a result, the present trend among historians is to discuss each so-called renaissance in more particular terms, e.g., the ''Italian Renaissance'', the ''English Renaissance'', etc. This terminology is particularly useful because it eliminates the need for fitting "The renaissance" into a chronology that previously held that it was preceded by the Middle Ages and followed by the [[Reformation]], which was sometimes patently false. The entire period is now more often replaced by the term 'Early Modern' in the practice of historians. See [[periodization]].

== [[Life in the Renaissance]] ==

Although the Renaissance was a time of significant change in comparison to the [[Middle Ages]], there were times of both peace and prosperity, and war, disease and famine. For the average man in the street (or [[village]]) daily life had changed little since the [[Middle Ages]]. Diet was similar, life was short (an average life expectancy of 30 - 35 years in most parts of [[Europe]], with perhaps a 50% child mortality rate within the first year of life), and war and disease were commonplace.

In comparison to the [[14th century]], however, the [[15th century]] and the [[16th century]] were both times of population growth, economic growth, and relative prosperity, especially for the town people and those of privilege.

=== [[Religion in the Renaissance]] ===

[[Religion in the Renaissance]] can be best summed up by saying that the '''Renaissance''' was a period of huge [[religious]] turmoil. The studies and teachings of the [[Humanists]] eventually lead to the [[Reformation]], and many of the religious debates can be broadly (and as inaccurately as broad generalisations usually are) categorised as a battle between the establishment and the new blood.

Undoubtedly one of the major threads was forged by [[Henry VIII]] of [[England]] when he declared his realm independant of Rome, establishing his own [[Church of England]], and thereby beginning the trend whereby the [[Catholic Church]] ceased to be able to provide a supra-national force of unification.

== [[Learning in the Renaissance]] ==

Perhaps the most significant invention of the Renaissance was the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printing_press printing press]. Apart from allowing many copies of the [[Bible]] to be distributed much more easily and cheaply than copying by hand, the new technology allowed wide distribution of [[political]] information, [[Renaissance Music]] works, [[Renaissance Dance]] texts, [[heresy|heresies]], and many other works.
=== [[Science and Technology in the Renaissance]] ===

[[Science and Technology in the Renaissance]] was focussed around the major sciences of [[astrology]] and [[geometry]], as well as [[medicine]], [[magic]] and [[alchemy]]. Although [[astronomy]] was a major emerging science, it did not truly come into its own until after the end of the [[16th century]]. Until [http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Kepler Johannes Kepler], [[astronomy]] was a science that was studied purely to enable better understanding of [[astrology]].

For example, [[Copernicus]], probably the man most recognisably a [[scientist]] of his day, studied [[medicine]], [[canon law]] and [[philosophy]] and earned a living as a [[secretary]] and a [[doctor]].

Nonetheless, the advent of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printing_press printing press] did allow for much wider distribution of scientific thought during the Renaissance than had been possible in the [[Middle Ages]] and so [[scientist]]s throughout [[Europe]] were able to collaborate on works and exchange [[theories]] in a way that was not previously possible. Everyone knew what everyone else was working on, even if it was completely wrong.
=== [[Renaissance Music]] ===

The advent of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printing_press printing press] in the Renaissance allowed the wide distribution of printed music. This allowed composers to sell their work more widely and obtain a better living. Important Renaissance composers and arrangers of music include [http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josquin_Des_Prez Josquin Des Prez] and [[Tielman Susato]].

=== [[Renaissance Dance]] ===

Although dance as an art form was well known in the [[middle ages]], the first recorded dance instructions and [[choreography]] date from the middle of the [[15th century]].

Early Italian dancemasters include [[Domenico da Piacenza]] and his students [[Antonio Cornazano]] and [[Guglielmo Ebreo]] (Guglielmo the [[Jew]]).

Dance masters of the late [[16th century]] include the Italians [[Fabritio Caroso]] and [[Cesare Negri]] as well as the frenchmen [[Thoinot Arbeau]] and [[Antoine Arena]].

=== Renaissance Jokes ===
Various jokes written by [[Leonardo da Vinci]] in his notebooks have survived to us, such as the following:

It was asked of a [[painting|painter]] why, since he made such beautiful figures, which were but dead things, his children were so ugly; to which the painter replied that he made his pictures by day, and his children by night.
=== Spam flood ===
As anyone who looked at [[Special:Recentchanges]] today probably noticed Cunnan was the target of a group of spam bots who touched a large number of pages. The domain the bots were spamming has now been added to the antispam filter.

I've been through all the touched pages and have edited and saved the most recent useable version of each. Unfortunately, the spam bots unwittingly hit a bug in the software which means that the the page revisions before each of their edits have most probably been corrupted. If anyone feels like spending an hour helping to cleanup then they should go through my edits for the day and check that the page revision I restored each article to was optimal (i.e. the second most recent revision in most cases).

Cunnan's software has been upgraded so that the database corruption wont occur again even if the spam bots return.
[[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 23:35, 8 Oct 2005 (CDT)

* Hmm, it just happened again. I believe I have got rid of the spam, but it was done using multiple "machines" so it wasn't worth my time blocking everyone. Also some pages were hit multiple times. Rollback only works for the last action on the page, including rollbacks, so some of the fixes had to be edits. Nasty! I understand Tobin's problems the first time. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 09:53, 22 Oct 2005 (CDT)
** Three cheers for Cian! Thanks for doing the dirty work Cian, the fact that you and Tobin have done this is much appreciated. Given that this is the second time this has happened maybe it's time that we adopted a policy of only allowing editing for people who have logged in. It's not a foolproof defence I know, and it makes us feel less welcoming, but it would save a lot of aggravation. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 20:55, 22 Oct 2005 (CDT)
*** The most nasty wiki spam bots use a mixture of accounts and anonymous edits (the attack today and the first major attack are both examples of this). Forcing people to register only inconveniences humans. I've updated the anti spam filter to include the <nowiki><div></nowiki> id that the recent spam attacks have all included. Hopefully this will catch future attacks from this bot. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 04:57, 5 Nov 2005 (CST)
*** The two attacks I have "cleaned up" today all targetted the same files but the second one created blank pages. I wonder if they were doing so for a purpose? I blocked the repeating URLs which sometimes actually used a username. [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 19:40, 11 Dec 2005 (CST)
**** I've added some things from today's spam flood to the anti spam filter. If things stop working someone should tell me. -- [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 05:51, 12 Dec 2005 (CST)
*FYI the [[France]] page is currently showing up as uneditable due to the spam filter --[[User:Simoncursitor|Simoncursitor]] 02:41, 8 Dec 2005 (CST)
** I know, I'll remove ''that site'' from the anti spam filter when I've got time to do a general cleanup -- [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 05:51, 12 Dec 2005 (CST)

*I'm getting sick of not being able to properly use the word special-ist (without the hyphen) because it includes cial-is (without the hyphen). I seem to use the word (and it's relatives) quite a bit. Is there any way we can still exclude the pharaceutical (because that trick is working nicely thankyou), but allow certain words that contain it? special-ist special-ism, special-ists, special-istic etc. [[User:Tiff|Tiff]]
** Oops, my bad. I'll change the anti spam filter to require a non-letter character on either side for a match. Should happen after I'm back from work today. Have people noticed any other false positives? -- [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 13:15, 12 Jan 2006 (CST)
*** Should be fixed now. The new rule for c*alis is '''<nowiki>[^A-Za-z]c*alis[^A-Za-z]</nowiki>''' (with the * replaced by the appropriate letter of course). -- [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 01:43, 13 Jan 2006 (CST)
* I was unable to add a link to the Bordescros website hosted by www . freewebs . com / bordescros because of the spam filter. Can this be made an exception please.--[[User:MasterWill|MasterWill]] 06:49, 16 Mar 2006 (CST)
** I've removed freewebs from the spam filter. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 00:15, 24 Mar 2006 (CST)

* Not quite a flood this time, but the same pages have been attacked by the same sort of spam from various different "users". Is there anyway we can combat that sort of spam (other than the manual power of moderator's fingers) ? I have been banning the users for 2 weeks, but it really is pointless if they just come back with a new "name" the next day. Is it possible to prevent people/bots using usernames that are in the format of URLs (eg. 218.53.104.2)? - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 08:49, 23 Jun 2006 (EST)

* I've just enabled two things that should help reduce the amount of spam we're getting. The first is proxy blocking using [http://www.au.sorbs.net/ SORBS]. This may catch a few legitimate users but that's unlikely (and if it does, well, they shouldn't be accessing the internet via an open proxy anyway). The second is [[wikipedia:Captcha|Captcha]]s for any edit which adds a URL to a page or changes an existing URL. For the time being the captchas are simple maths problems, e.g. "38 - 6 =" or "12 + 0 =". I'm going to e-mail [[User:Del|Del]] about the possibility of having the software required for image captchas installed on chiara (Cunnan's server). There may still be a few spammers which get through but this will stop the stupider bots and most non-humans. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 19:39, 22 July 2006 (EST)

===Branle Dance Broken===

I've found that the page for the Branle dance is broken, both from searching for it and from the link for the dance page.

:[[branle]] looks fine to me. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 22:17, 25 Jun 2006 (EST)

I have tried it again and it's still not working. Specifically, I'm getting this error:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last
attempted database query was:
'cunnan:messages:Currentevents' for key 1 (localhost)".

I am using Mozilla Firefox, the latest version (if that might make a difference).

*I can't interpret the technical stuff (I'll leave that to others, who i hope will log in soon), but it's working fine for me too, on a recent version of firefox. Maybe this is a timing issue - [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] and I are in the same timezone, and may be logging in a quieter time of day than you useage-wise. Have you checked 10 minutes, or even an hour later? We've had occasional errors related to server overuse.[[User:Tiff|Tiff]] 19:15, 27 Jun 2006 (EST)

=== Software Upgrade ===
Cunnan has been upgrade to version 1.6.8 of the Mediawiki software. If anything appears broken or acts weirdly mention it here so that someone can look at it. It's worth noting that there have been major changes to the database including conversion to UTF-8 encoding. This should have worked but some special characters may be messed up. You can help Cunnan by fixing them as you find them. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 19:12, 12 July 2006 (EST)

:All the unusual characters are out. I know that you've changed a couple of the AE ligatures on AEthelmearc, but there are lots of other characters such as the Forme of Cury recipes, and the Exeter Book riddles. I seem to recall last time this happened you were able to do a fix without editing every single item. Any chance of doing that again? [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 22:46, 12 July 2006 (EST)
::No, sadly, the newer version of the software requires the database to be in UTF-8. I'm at a loss as to why the conversion didn't work. I'm going to have another look at it in the morning but I'm not sure if it can be easily fixed. If it can't be then will just have to bite the bullet and fix problem pages manually. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 23:21, 12 July 2006 (EST)
:::Congrats on the upgrade! I hope you'll now be able to implement some of the extensions that help to address the wikispam issues. At mine, we ended up simply having to force a confirmed email address before editing, which unfortunately meant no anon edit at all, but since they only account for 1% of our contributions (besides spam) we went ahead with the plan. As far as you UTF-8 issue, I think it either has to do with PHP or with going from an early 1.4 version all the way to 1.6 in a single jump. I'm also working on the rest of the kingdom devices and their populace badges where I can. --[[User:ThorgrimrGunnarrsson|Thorgrimr of Dragonsspine]] 11:11, 13 July 2006 (EST)
: Why don't we just change them all to the accented letters etc to the &; forms, e.g. &AElig; and &egrave; They are charset independent. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 16:34, 13 July 2006 (EST)

=== Navigation links ===
The links in the sidebar to [[Current events]] and [[Cunnan:Site support]] aren't used for much at present. Does anyone have a suggestion for something they might be replaced with? I might send Del an e-mail asking if collecting donations to go towards the cost of hosting is possible. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 13:49, 13 July 2006 (EST)

=== weird characters ===
Hiya after a long time. I noticed on two pages, I was getting something weird - black diamonds with question marks in them. I believe in both cases they took the place of special charchters, like an e with an accent mark on top of it. I am using Firefox. [[User:Sabine|Sabine]] 06:19, 28 July 2006 (EST)
:Known problem. The database should have been converted to UTF-8 during the most recent upgrade but something went wrong. I haven't had time to try and fix it yet. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 11:41, 28 July 2006 (EST)

=== Content police :^) ===
I believe that one of the [[Cunnan:What isn't Cunnan|policies]] for [[Cunnan]] is that it is not to be used by groups as an archive that their own webpages/newsgroups can't manage. Therefore I am watching the pages for [[Bloodstone Keep Origins Ch 1]] and [[Bloodstone Keep Origins Ch 2]]. If too many of these sort of pages occur, we might have to make a policy edict about them. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 09:46, 10 August 2006 (EST)
:As they currently read the Bloodstone pages are OK, in my opinion. As long as they are only documenting events that have happened I don't think it's an issue. Planning events or using Cunnan as a genreal archive would be out though. The articles should probably be merged under a better title though. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 13:48, 14 August 2006 (EST)
:I'm not sure about these articles. They don't strike me as conforming to either the style or the content standards we should have in place here. I respectfully suggest that "Bloodstone Keep Origins" should more appropriately be an off-site webpage with links from the [[Bloodstone Keep]] article.
Having become a [[Kingdom]] in September [[A.S. XXXII]], '''Æthelmearc''' is the fifteenth oldest in the [[Known World]]. Geographically it consists of West Virginia, Western & Central Pennsylvania, and Western & Central New York.

==History==

==Groups==
Æthelmearc is home to [http://www.lightlink.com/myrkies/ Myrkfaelinn], the only Independent Dominion in the SCA. The Board of Directors ruled that they owed fealty to no king, as their charter mentioned the then-king of the [[East]] by name.

The Baronies of Æthelmearc include: [[Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands]], [[Barony of the Rhydderich Hael]], [[Barony of Thescorre]], [[Barony of Blackstone Mountain]], [[Barony of St. Swithin's Bog]], [[Barony of Delftwood]], and [[Barony of the Endless Hills]].

* [[Groups of Æthelmearc]]

==Rulers==

All entrants in the Crown Tournament must be at least 21 years of age and have been a subject of Æthelmearc for at least one year. The tourney is usually fought as a [[double elimination]] tournament, although the format may be altered if there are 16 or fewer fighters in the list.

The current King and Queen of Æthelmearc are Malcolm MacEoghain and Tessa the Huntress.

* [[Past rulers of Æthelmearc]]

==Events==

Aside from crown tournaments and coronations, major events held by Æthelmearc are:

* [[Pennsic]]
* [[Twelfth Night (Æthelmearc)|Twelfth Night]]
* [[Æthelmearc Academy]]
* The Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon
* [[Æthelmearc War Practice]]

==Awards==

Aside from the standard [[Society level award]]s Æthelmearc has three tiers of awards. The Orders of High Merit, which convey a [[Grant of Arms]], the Orders of Merit, which convey an [[Award of Arms]] and the non-armigerous awards.

The [http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/jessa/aethelmearc.html awards] given by Æthelmearc can be found on Mistress Jessa's excellent page. At the present time, her list does not include the as-yet-unnamed Order of Merit for Martial Authenticity, which is given for having an authentic appearance in fencing or heavy fighting lists, or on the archery range.
The word '''University''' is derived from the [[Latin]] word for "[[guild]]". The church established schools with the purpose of educating people in a particular profession (a non-trade profession), and then universities arose purely for "higher education". In the [[Middle Ages]], it was mostly [[church]]es or courts who had the better [[book]] collections of the times, so therefore those involved with these institutions (who were mostly those with lots of [[money]], or those who could obtain patronage from the same) therefore had access to higher education.

== Universities in [[Europe]] ==

The first university, [[Al-Azhar]], was founded in Cairo, [[Egypt]] in 970AD.

The first university founded in [[Europe]] was the one in [[Bologna]], in 1088AD, which was followed up with more being founded predominently in [[Italy]], [[France]], [[England]] and [[Spain]] (during the [[1100]]s) and later in [[Germany]] and [[Austria]] ([[1300]]s). They had various faculties, as they do today. Note that the age of a university does not necessarily reflect on its status.

The premiere theology university of medieval Europe was the [[University of Paris]] at [[Notre Dame]], but [[Bologna]] was the place to go for [[Law]], and Palermo for [[Medicine]]. In [[England]], [[Oxford]] and [[Cambridge]] weren't bad. Most medieval universities, and students at them, were supported by the [[Catholic Church]], or by bequests from the rich and the pious. University students had a fair amount of control over the faculty and started to organise themselves as [[nation]]s (people of like cultural origin or [[language]]). Brawls between local townspeople and students were not unknown. A successful university career was often a stepping-stone to important positions at [[Court]] or in the [[Church]].

See also: "[[wikipedia:Medieval university|medieval university]]" in [[Wikipedia]].

== Universities in the SCA ==

[[SCA]] [[group]]s may be based at modern universities and are referred to as a [[college]]. These are often a popular recruitment base for the [[Shire]] or [[Barony]] in which the College lies. In the [[East Kingdom]], these groups are often referred to as [[Borough|Boroughs]].

The word "university" can also be used in the [[SCA]] to refer to an institution offering semi-structured courses of learning about medieval facts or crafts.

However, sometimes [[mundane]] [[laws]] take precedance on calling anything a university. In [[New Zealand]] the use of the word "University" is reserved for actual [[government]]-acredited institutions approved to use that in their [[name]], and therefore the [[Kingdom of Lochac]] does not use the word "University" to describe any of its internal institutions.

* [[University of Ithra]] ([[Kingdom of An Tir]])
* [[East Kingdom]] - runs Universities as focused [[event|events]] which specifically emphasize scholarly learning.
* [http://www.aecademy.org Æcademies of Æthelmearc] - offer classes in the martial and gentle arts at twice-yearly
* [http://university.atlantia.sca.org/ University of Atlantia] - offers degrees to those who meet its qualification for teaching and attending classes at its sessions, which are held two or three times per year.
* [http://www.royalu.org/Welcome.html Royal University of Meridies] (RUM) - holds class and offers degrees
* [http:///www.midrealm.org/rum/ Royal University of the Midrealm] (RUM)- held annually or semi-annually depending on interest.
* [[Royal University of Scir Havoc]] (RUSH) - educational group in [[Calontir]].
