In [[SCA]] [[war]]s, '''non-combatants''' are people who are out on the [[field]] but cannot [[engage]] in [[combat]] with anyone on the field. They can be [[kill]]ed as a [[light fighter|light]] and must comply to minimum [[light armour]] standards. To become [[authorisation|authorised]] as a non-combatant, you must be over the minimum combat age for your [[kingdom]] and know the [[rules of the list]].

Being a non-combatant is the best way to enjoy a war and get a feel for it without actually having to do much at all!

Types of non-combatants:
* [[Banner Bearer]] (particularly in [[Lochac]] for which the term is often used exclusively)

Jerusalem is a holy city to three [[religion]]s, [[judaism]], [[islam]], and [[christianity]]. The Moslems contend that Mohammed ascended to Paradise from the city, the Jews' Temple was built in the city, and the Christians look to it as the center of the the lands where Christ lived.

Based on this contentious history, one would guess (correctly) that Jerusalem has been the center of conflict for centuries. It was the object of the [[Crusade]]s, one of [[Saladin]]'s conquests, and even to present day, is the object of desire for many groups.

You can usually get double strength garbage bags from large [[supermarket]]s (the heavy orange ones work well) and you will need at least two if you plan on properly sealing a [[backpack]] inside (and a third if you plan on crossing any [[river]]s deeper than your waist).

Another use for plastic bags is [[insulation]]. If you have something that doesn't need moving (or if you dont mind a crinkling sound when it does) then you can stuff it full of plastic bags to keep whatever's inside warm. All the little air pockets amongst the bags wil trap heat for a surprisingly long time.

A collection of soldiers who fight over land. Armies can be as simple as a mob or raiding party with little to no leadership, or a rigidly heirarchal orginization with clearly defined roles for all members. Most [[SCA]] armies tend to be fairly well-trained (better than most armies in [[period]], at least, since our [[fighters]] have reasonable training with their weapons).

== Leadership ==

Most armies are headed by a single person, a [[general]]. Authorities can be delegated to [[lieutenant]]s, who are in charge of a single part of the army. In large fighting forces (like what would be found at an SCA [[war]]), there might be more than one level of leadership, with orders going from the general to a lieutenant, to a [[sargent]], to the individual soldiers.

It is generally agreed that the better the leadership of an army is, and the more responsive the soldiers on the field are to that leadership, the better an army will perform on the field. For this reason, generals tend to be accomplished fighers, who have studied [[tactics]] and military theory.

== Training and discipline ==

As with any organization, if the individuals in the organization have not practiced their role in the organization the performance of the whole will suffer. For this reason, most professional armies undergo extensive training to the aim of instilling discipline, training in a specific role, and an ''esprit d'corps''.
