=== sca.org.au documentation ===

Just wondering whether cunnan might be a useful place to store the documentation that I have started to put together for the databases and stuff on sca.org.au? This includes the new registry & groups database, and the events database (currently mentioned on the Arrowsreach wiki, but plan to start coding on it soon).

Specifically, neither the FAQ nor the policy document says what sort of articles are OK to put on Cunnan. The front page says it's a medieval & renaissance wiki with an SCA slant but that doesn't really cover it in my opinion. The SCA covers lots of areas, and there probably could be a lot of stuff added here about SCA administration, etc, but it isn't really related to the middle ages or renaissance.

Also, a side note, sca.org.au is going to get an OS upgrade sometime during October. That will mean things like a new PHP version, a new version of Apache (from 1.3 to 2.0) etc. Keep an eye on the site mailing list for annoucements.

[[User:Del|Del]]

: My view is that this is a beginner's encyclopaedia to the [[Middle Ages]]. It is being written with the knowledge that [[recreationist]]s are the main users. A decision had obviously been made in the past that the pages were allowed to relate the historical data specifically to how the [[SCA]] is played. This has been expanded by writers (like me) into pages that are specifically on how the SCA runs (cf. [[Board of Directors]] etc). I helped here to reduce the ambiguity of SCA jargon between branches and help define the roles of [[officer]]s etc for those outside the offices. However, I still feel that the main purpose of [[Cunnan]] should be basic historical information. While it could be used as an SCA database, that should not swamp the rest of the system. This is especially important if the SCA stuff was just relating to one [[Kingdom]], not the SCA as a whole. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 14:53, 2 Aug 2004 (EST)
I think that we are listed on the wrong page since we meet the criteria for moderate compliance but that is beside the point.
'''Education''' is a [[luxury]] and in early [[period]] it was something only a few people could afford. This changed somewhat with the [[Renaissance]].

Formal education was not a necessity for the overwhelming majority of people throughout much of the period. Far more important than academic learning was maximising the numbers of healthy bodies producing the goods needed to merely survive (primarily food, clothing and shelter). Work as a contributing member of the community commenced practically as soon as one was able to walk and follow simple instructions. Formal education is only able to be afforded in extremely affluent societies.

During period [[university]] lectures were, almost always, given in [[Latin]].

Arguably the first university was the Academy founded in 387 BC by the Greek philosopher Plato in the grove of Academos near Athens, where students were taught [[philosophy]], [[mathematics]] and [[gymnastics]].

The first European medieval universities were established in Bologna ([[Italy]]) and Paris ([[France]]) in the [[Middle Ages]] for the study of [[law]], [[medicine]], and [[theology]]. Before that, similar institutions already existed in the Islamic world, notably in Cairo. The most important Asian university was Nalanda, in Bihar, India, where the second century Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna was based.

During the [[Middle Ages]] and [[Renaissance]] the [[feudal]] holdings of the [[pope]] were much larger, and included all of [[Rome]] and much of central [[Italy]] stretching west to the [[Adriatic]] coast.
The Holy See's diplomatic history began in the fourth century, but the boundaries of the papacy's temporal power have shifted over the centuries. From the 8th century through the middle of the 19th century, the Popes held sway over the Papal States, which included a broad band of territory across central Italy. In 1860, after prolonged civil and regional unrest, Victor Emmanuel's army seized the Papal States, leaving only Rome and surrounding coastal regions under papal control.
My one complaint about Wikis (and it will be featured in an article which I am writing for the journal '''American Libraries''') is the amount of link fear that is evident. If Wikis are going to allow links, then they are going to need to allow links that relate to articles to stay in place. Mass deleting of links and accusations of spamming will turn people against Wikis fairly quickly. Many innocent people have been accussed of spamming Wikis and it hurts Wiki growth. If linking is problematic, turn this feature off. Otherwise, only delete off-topic links as spam.
I will not log in everyday here. If you leave me a note, please be patient for a response.

External links are (almost) always treated as suspicious. What made me think your addition to [[Germany]] was link spam was that you made the edit while not logged in (perfectly acceptable but worrying re: external links). The fact that the page doesn't cover the SCA period also made me think it might be the work of a link spammer.

Sorry about my hasty removal, I try not to be overzealous but link spam tends to build up surprisingly fast if one isn't careful.
=== Another upgrade ===
Those of you who contribute to the Wikipedia will have noticed that over the past few days it has undergone a major facelift as well as having a major feature upgrade. Once the software settles down and the new version is released to the public I will install it here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)

:The upgrade is now complete. I apologize for the abruptness of the upgrade but there was a problem with the old software (I would have had to reinstall it or install this newer version). The new interface can be customized and we will have category support again.

:As always you should report any problems here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 18:14, 8 Jun 2004 (EST)
I've noticed that Cunnan is listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copies_of_Wikipedia_content_%28low_degree_of_compliance%29 (under SCA wiki). I think that we are listed on the wrong page since we meet the criteria for moderate compliance but that is beside the point. We really should do something about this when we come across articles of our that are copied from the Wikipedia. Just adding "Some of this articles content were taken from the Wikipedia article at ''http://whateverurl''" would be sufficient. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)
=== re/moving misspelt page titles ===

Hi,
I have noticed that there is a page for Pavillions. This is a misspelling of Pavilions and while I have corrected all the words inside the page, I don't know how to move the filename. The only way I know is to make a new Pavilions page and redirect Pavillions to it but I am not happy to do this.

Please advise,

Cian, the spelling pedant.

:If you are logged in (which you seem to be). You can move a page by clicking the "move" link. It should be along the top of the article (if you are using the new design) or in the left hand set of menus (if you are using the old design). You'll be asked where to move the page to and the old version will be turned into a redirect. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] (PS writing <nowiki>~~~</nowiki> will automatically sign your name on talk pages)

Sir Michael: Another paragraph on history.

France as a medieval kingdom occupied much the same area as classical [[Gaul]], but having prospered under the [[Roman Empire|Pax Romana]] its people spoke [[Latin]], and having been invaded by the [[Franks]] its blood was no longer [[Celtic]].

The lands had become part of a great [[Carolingian Empire|empire]] under the rule of [[Charlemagne]], but after his death in 814 the empire was split into three parts and his son [[Charles the Bald]] took control of the western portion. Having had a father known as Charles the Magnificent, Charles the Bald tried to improve his epithet with an an attempt to reunite the empire. This failed. [[Charles the Fat]] had even more motivation but his attempt to reunite the empire also failed.

The Carolingian line eventually died out in the western kingdom, which was probably just as well given the number of bald and fat people it turned out. The leading nobles then elected a new king, [[Hugh Capet]] and thus the [[Capetian]] dynasty was born. France was by now a generally feudal kingdom, and the Capetians had to work long and hard at politics in order to build their authority. One of their most difficult land holders was [[Henry II]], King of [[England]]. As you can imagine, getting him to swear [[fealty]] was a difficult task.

The Capetian line was replaced by the [[Valois]] dynasty. Their hobbies included losing to the English at [[Battle of Agincourt|Agincourt]], not saving [[Joan of Arc]] from the English and slaughtering [[Protestant]]s on [[St Bartholemew's day]]. They were replaced by the [[Bourbon]]s in 1589, who were even worse and so the French gave up on monarchy all together in the late [[18th century|eighteenth century]].

France was one of the earliest countries to progress from feudalism to the nation-state. Its monarchs surrounded themselves with capable ministers, and French armies were among the most innovative, disciplined, and professional of their day.

'''Germany''' didn't exist as a single country during this [[period]]. After the fall of the Roman Empire, barbarian tribes over centuries slowly formed a large number of baronies and fiefdoms that warred with each other constantly. It was not until the 19th Century that Germany became a unified state.

Like [[France]], Germany counts [[Charlemagne]] as its great progenitor. Most of Germany formed part of the [[Carolingian Empire]]. When this was split into three parts the Germanic lands mostly went to [[Lothar]]. Lothar's Kingdom gradually became a patchwork of states who elected an Emperor. This union was known as the [[Holy Roman Empire]].

===Germany and the SCA===
After WWII, Germany contained many US/NATO military bases. With this eventually came the [[SCA]]. Much of the populace of the [[Kingdom of Drachenwald]] lives in Germany.
Please stop removing my personal attributions. If I wrote it, I want it to be identified as mine, so if someone has a problem they can talk to me about it.

I dont want to hide behind anonymity, especially for my views on stuff like "The Renaissence never happened".

I dont mind it being edited, or even amended, but for scholarship to work you have to be able to stand behind your work.

Make me upset about this, and I'll find that quote from St Jerome about proper attribution *grin*
On the page [[Humanists]] I have added a section about SCA personas being humanists. It contains a bullet point beginning with the words " You can quote several Greek texts ...". Down the bottom someone's added a comment "Specific names to drop could be ...". Can you take that comment and do your HTML trick to make it a side-note to the bullet point above about greek texts? I'd do it myself but now I can't remember where you explained how to do it and my HTML skills are fairly rough.

I want to make some more "Your SCA Persona is a ..." bits on various other pages too but I'll get this one right first.

Thanx,
===Hello from a Wikipedian===
Hi Tobin -- I noticed the article on [[Cunnan]] at Wikipedia, and dropped by to check it out. '''Very cool!''' I also noticed the authorship discussion. In case you aren't already aware of it, there are a lot of good resources at [http://meta.wikipedia.org Meta Wikipedia] and at [http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl?WhyWikiWorks Meatball Wiki]. Good luck! [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bcorr Wikipedia:User:Bcorr] [[User:64.91.162.225|64.91.162.225]] 04:51, 25 Dec 2003 (EST)
So, any idea what the story with symbols is? I tried to move the Æthelmearc page to the right spot and it said it couldn't submit the form. And you will have noticed that your recipe pages are a mess too. Also, your change of the name Æthelmearc on the Kingdom page made no difference to me. I'm not sure if thie is a viewer specific thing. Oh, and get some sleep!
Tobin, I have noticed that the [[List Keeper]] link redirects to [[List keeper]] which wants to redirect to [[Lists Officer]], but doesn't. Is this to be expected? -- [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 13:26, 17 Jun 2004 (EST)
ps. the Aethelmearc above still looks funky to me, but not correct.
Hi, I am a librarian at Central Michigan University and I added links to several of your pages dealing with national histories (see France and Germany). I was amused by the comical history attempts on the prior pages and thought I would add a link to better the histories. I was quite mystified to see these labelled as possible link spam. :]

I was going to blog Cunnan at my information literacy blog (lorenzen.blogspot.com) pointing out how outsiders can improve flawed history sites but if you think I am spam...

I appreciate your link vigillance. Could you let me know how you determine real link adds from spam? (Note what you reply may be used on my blog.)

Thanks,

Best wishes,
