The Kingdom of Jerusalem was the chief Crusader State in the middle east. It was established in 1099 by the soldiers of the First Crusade, who conquered the city and massacred its Muslim inhabitants. At first, the Kingdom was a loose conglomeration of conquered territories, but as time progressed these amalgamated into a more-or-less cohesive feudal state, often called Outremer by Europeans. A constant influx of Christian pilgrims and crusaders guaranteed both economic prosperity and an uneasy relationship with the Jerusalem's Muslim neighbors.

Because of this constant connection with their European homeland, the Kingdom of Jerusalem is often held up as the birthplace of chivalry, where the barely-civilized western Europeans learned many of chivalric arts from the Muslim peoples. These cosmopolitan habits were then exported them back to their homelands, to the general enrichment of European culture.

Two great monastic orders of chivalry were founded for the defense of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon and the Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, better known as the Templars and the Hospitallers. These two orders, both founded in the aftermath of the First Crusade, held great influence in (and long outlived) the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

The Kingdom of Jerusalem endured for more than two centuries, although the city of Jerusalem was lost to the Muslims after a siege in 1187. The remnants of the kingdom itself were then governed from a number of coastal cities, mos notably Acre.

The kingdom of Jerusalem ended in 1291 with the fall of Acre: the titular kingship continued within period, but was never more than an appendage to other titles and claims, by kings of Cyprus and of Naples.
The Patriarch of Jerusalem initially claimed it, but it was not until over five years later that it was severed from the crown, and granted to Hugh of Le Puiset. His son, Hugh II, succeeded him, but his rebellion against Fulk and Melisende led to the subdivision of the County into smaller fiefs, and was designated as appenage to Prince Amalric. Later, in 1153, Ascalon was added to the County, after it capture by Baldwin III. Thereafter it remained a royal appenage, until it was granted to Walter of Brienne in 1221, then to the Ibelin family in 1254.
Hugh I of Jerusalem (he was already Hugh III of Cyprus, and was also known as Hugh of Antioch and Hugh de Lusignan) took the regency of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1264, on the death of his mother Isabella. He succeeded to the throne of Cyprus in 1267, on the death of the teenage king Hugh, and when, in the next year, Conradin, the absentee king of Jerusalem, also died (on the orders of Charles of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily), Hugh advanced his own claim to the throne.

He was challenged by Maria of Antioch, who claimed the title based on proximity of blood to Conradin and descent from Amalric I, but the Palestine barons elected Hugh as King, and Maria, having spent years attempting to gain support for her cause in Europe, finally sold her claim to the King of Naples (the same Charles of Anjou) in 1269, an act ratified by the Pope in 1277.

Hugh spent 8 years in Palestine (Jerusalem the city had long been lost to the Muslims) but found the faction politics not to his taste and returned to Cyprus in 1276. He left Balian of Ibelin as his bailiff but within a year Angevin forces had expelled him, and seized the kingdom.

Hugh was married to Isabella of Ibelin, and they had 11 children: John succeeded Hugh as king of Jerusalem, being succeeded in turn by Henry (the intervening son, Bohemond, died at a young age); Amalric, who became Regent in Cyprus, being succeeded by his brothers Aimery and Guy; and daughters Mary (married James II of Aragon), Margaret (married the king of Armenia), Alice (married Balian of Ibelin), Helvis (married another king of Armenia) and Isabelle (who married a third king of Armenia).

Hugh died in 1284CE.

The Far Isles Medieval Society is a historical re-enactment society based in the UK, covering the period 500 to 1600 AD, that is from the Dark Ages to shortly before the English Civil War. The society is in its 25th year and, although it was initially a part of the US-based Society for Creative Anachronism, it has been independent for most of that period. Most of the membership is based around the South-East of England, but with other members elsewhere in the country. Revels are held around the country, most being one-day events. The highlight of the year is the Foundation and Independence Revel, held annually over a weekend in October, formerly at a 12th century castle (now a Youth Hostel) on the border of Wales.

This description was based on the content of the society's webpage:
The Far Isles has been, variously, a shire under the SCA East Kingdom, a Free Barony under its own Baroness, ((almost) a Celtic gynarchy), a Principality under a Princess, and then a Prince-Archbishop, and finally a Kingdom. Its population work in a wide variety of Arts and Sciences, as well as taking part in tourneys, formerly using rattan, presently steel. Combat archery is not recognised, but the Society supports a thriving corps of target archers.
* the Freemark ("A Free Mark for Free Men") -- was a Shire, presently a County

There are also non-landed nobility (indeed, the majority of the Far Isles nobility are non-landed) extending from two Princesses downward to Barons. Previously there had been no serving Knights -- those raised to this rank have, each and every one, withdrawn from the Isles. At one time, three knights existed side by side - Sir Tristram Langswerd, Sir Igor Ross, and Sir Nii Cantrell, formerly Earl of Forest Hall, now Duke of Wraithwood, but now only the Earl remains.

[Local note: To avoid misunderstandings, in the Far Isles, Duchies are obtained by election and royal appointment, and no office is obtained through combat (although Kingdom and regional Champions are recognised)]
Update (November 2017)
The Princess of Camcairndyrth Passed Beyond in the summer of 2007; her successor, installed at Twelfth Night 2009, is Thane Astrid Stormtongue, a well-respected and long-standing citizen of the Isles.

David I was the youngest son of Malcolm III Canmore and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Edward Atheling (and therefore grand-daughter of the English king Edmund Ironside). He was born circa 1080CE. His younger years were spent in England, where he became used to the Norman style of life. His younger sister, Maud or Matilda, married the English king Henry I.

On the death, in 1107, of his brother Edgar, king of Scotland, David inherited, as an independent earldom, all of Scotland south of the Forth-Clyde divide, whilst his older brother, Alexander inherited the Scots throne, and governance over the northern districts. When Alexander died, in 1124, David suceeded to the crown of the whole nation.

By that time, he had married, to Matilda, daughter of the English Earl of Northumbria, and had become Henry I's Earl of Huntingdon, and thereby an English baron. As such he swore fealty to the Empress Matilda, as heiress to Henry I, and when Stephen usurped the English throne in 1135, David invaded England in support of her cause (not to mention in hope of winning Northumbria for himself). Met by a strong army, he made peace, but broke it by invading again in 1138, when he was defeated near Northallerton.

He retreated as far as Carlisle, and made peace again, gaining the Earldom of Northumbria from Stephen, but joined Matilda in London in 1141. He came close to capture on this adventure and retired to his own country, to build it up. He died at Carlisle in 1153 and, since both his sons were dead, he was succeeded by his 12 year old grandson, Malcolm IV, son of his son Henry, Earl of Huntingdon, and Adela, daughter of the Earl of Surrey.

David supported the Scots Church, especially in its role as the main instrument of teaching, and founded religious houses to support this. He founded the bishopric of Glasgow, and used monks as his bureaucracy and advisors, on the Anglo-Norman model. He also made land grants to many Anglo-Norman families, thus strengthening Scotland's feudal aristocracy, and used this process to accelerate Scotland's modernisation. He also supported Scots trade and commerce, and established Scotland's first Sheriffdom (at Roxburgh).

His mother, Margaret, was later (1251) canonised, and David acquired the cognomen "the Saint", for his efforts for the Church.

Eochaid came to the throne after the unfortunate death -- the unfortunate and violent death -- the unfortunate, violent and probably non-accidental death -- of his uncle Aedh. His claim descended, however, not through the male line (Aedh's predecessor, Constantine had a son Donald who held that position) but the female, via Constantine's sister, who had married Run, the King of Strathclyde.

On Aedh's demise, Eochaid seized the throne with Giric, a cousin, who was also descended from Alpin (and who, like Eochaid, may have known more about Aedh's death (unfortunate and violent) than history has managed to retain). Their joint rule was apparently less than ideal for Eochaid, and one version has it that he then collaborated with Donald to remove Giric from the throne.

Once he was king, in 889, Donald repaid Eochaid by relieving him of all his regnal troubles by sending him into exile in northern Wales, and obscurity, even the date of his death being now unknown.
He was born in 1155, betrothed and married in 1160 to Margaret, daughter of Louis VII of France (despite that fact that their marriage was supposed to have taken palce later, but there were these castles, in the dowry, that Henry senior ugently wanted to take possession of), and crowned as co-King with his father in 1170. Louis also took exception to the coronation -- Margaret hadn't been crowed Queen at the same time, and the Church celebrant had been the Archbishop of York, not of Canterbury (who was Thomas Becket, then in exile in France. Henry therefore replaced Becket with a new Archbishop, and re-enacted the coronation at Winchester in 1172, including Margaret this time.<p>
Henry the Young King proved a problem though :: the truth was, he was very conscious of the status he thought he ought to have. He commented that he was better than his father because he was son of a king, while Henry II's father, Geoffrey, had merely been Count of Anjou. He also wanted lands of his own to govern, which his father didn't want to happen, since he could see the possibility of his empire being severed. So, with the help of his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and on a pretext to do with control of acstles (again), the Young King started a revolt, and drew his younger brothers Richard and John into it as well. The dispute lasted for over a decade, and in 1183 he died in Turenne, leaving no child (his son, William, had died after 3 days) and a widow, who went on to marry Bela III of Hungary in 1185 (she died in 1197 in Acre in the Holy Land)

This is the page for King Henry II of England .<br>
You may be looking for King Henry II of Cyprus and Jerusalem
----
King Henry II (March 25, 1133 - July 6, 1189), was the first of the Angevin kings. He was a highly effective king who did not hesitate to break a few eggs if he wanted to make an omelette.

Henry came to the throne in a kingdom that was in anarchy after King Stephen's reign. He got the Barons into line with remarkable speed. The bulk of his lands were however in France, having acquired Normandy and Anjou through inheritance and much of south-west France through marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. It was because of these land holding that the English Kings claimed the throne of France until the 15th Century.

Henry II received a lot of bad press due to the murder of Thomas Beckett, but it was all a misunderstanding. Honest.

Henry's family was beyond dysfunctional. Eleanor spent most of her married life in prison and his sons were regularly at odds with him. Richard even attacked Henry with the aid of Louis VII of France. Still, Henry managed to outlive two of his sons -- Henry the Young King, and Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany, each of whom, in his time, had also revolted against their father. Henry's legacy was squandered though when Richard lost his money crusading and getting captured, while John Lackland justified his father's lack of faith in him by losing his French posessions as well as the respect of the Barons.

On the other hand, his antecedents were impressive. His mother was a king's daughter, Augusta (also Maude and Matilda), daughter of Henry I of England (son of the Conqueror) and Matilda of Scotland (herself daughter of the Scots king Malcolm III), and widow of the Holy Roman Emperor before her remarriage. His father was Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, son of Count Fulk (who had also been King of Jerusalem) and of Erembourg (or Ermentrude), Countess of Maine. The (slight) blot on the escutcheon was, of course, the legend that, back in history, the counts of Anjou were descended, in some way, from the demi-demon Melusine.

A Contemporary Eye
Gerald of Wales described King Henry as follows, in his 1188 book The Conquest of Ireland: <br>
:... hair that was almost red in colour, grey eyes and a large round head. His eyes were bright, and in anger fierce, and flecked with red. He had a fiery complexion, his voice was husky, his neck bent forward a little from his shoulders, and he had a broad chest and powerful arms. His body was fleshy, and he had a very large belly, naturally so, and not due to the effects of gluttony

Gerald also noted that he used immense amounts of exercise both to mitigate his plumpness and to bring his body firmly under his mind's control.
He reigned for 9 years, dying in 955 CE, aged 30. He is descrobed as suffering from the "heriditary illness of the House of Wessex", similar to his grandfather Alfred the Great which is now believed to be Crohn's Disease. His reign was remarkable for the rebellion in York by Archbishop Wulfstan who invited the pagan Norwegian prince, Eric Bloodaxe to become king of a breakaway kingdom. After some internal squabbles Bloodaxe (so called due to his having killed his two brothers) was turned out only to return once more. Eadred led a punitive expedition, but did not meet Eric Bloodaxe who had been ambushed and himself killed at a place called Stanmoor. He ruthlesslessly harried the area, burning down the great priory at Ripon. Archbishop Wulfstan was taken prisoner and demoted to a smaller Bishopric in the south where he could be watched.<p>
He had poor health and is reported to have been unable to swallow solid food, having to chew it, drink the juices and spit out the residue. In the face of these difficulties he was a remarkably tough and able leader. St. Dunstan had come to notice under Edmund, but reached a position of dominanance under Eadred, becoming inseparable as Eadred neared death.
Unmarried, he left no son, and was succeeded by his nephew, Eadwig All-Fair, whose marriage to Aelgifu, his distant cousin was annulled by Archbishop Odo the Severe.

Edmund, born 921CE, (later named the Magnificent) was the son of Edward the Elder by his third wife, Edgiva. He first came to prominence at the age of 16, when he accompanied his elder half-brother, Athelstan, to the battle of Brunanburgh, against the Norse men of North England. Athelstan had inherited the English throne in 924, and when he died in 939, Edmund became the first king to able to claim sovreignty over "all" of modern England, being ruler of Mercia, Wessex, and Northumbria.

When the Norse King of Dublin, Olaf I (Guthfrithson), seized York, Edmund marched North, beseiged the city, and finally, with the help of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, settled a treaty. In 941 Olaf suffered a fatal accident while trying to raid Northumbria. Edmund marched north again, and removed the East Midlands area from the control of Olaf's cousin and successor, Olaf Sigtryggson, who was trying to both retain York and block Idwal of Gwynedd's advance from Wales. In 944, Edmund marched on York itself, expelling both Sigtryggson, and his rival Ragnall Guthfirthson (Olaf's brother). In the following year, he attacked Strathclyde, killed its king, and handed his kingdom to the Scots Malcolm I. By recognising Northumbria as the border between their kingdoms, he obtained Malcolm's favour for life.

Edmund married twice, first to (later Saint) Aelfgith, who bore him two sons, Eadwig and Edgar before her death in 944CE. He then married Ethelflead, daughter of Aelfgar, Ealdorman of Wilthshire, who gave him no children. Edmund died in 946, stabbed in a scuffle when the outlaw Leofa infiltrated Edmund's hunting lodge at Pucklechurch in Gloucestershire. This is recorded in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle. He was buried at Glastonbury, and succeeded by Eadred, his younger brother.

His attribution as "the Magnificent" may have been an attempt at translating into Latin a Saxon epithet meaning "Doer of Deeds".
His life took an Oedipal turn in 856 when he deposed his father and in 858, after his father had died, married his own widowed mother in law (who was aged 14).
Egbert was born around the year 770 and died in 839. Having been accepted as King of Essex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex and for a short time Mercia, he has been referred to as the first King of all England.

In 789 Egbert was forced into exile, and may have spent some of his time in the court of Charlemagne. He returned a few years later (possibly having married a daughter of Charlemagne) and succeeded Beorhtric (who was one of those responsible for his exile) as King of Wessex in 802.

Egbert removed Wessex from the Mercian confederation, and eventually defeated Beornwulf of Mercia in 825. He was proclaimed "Bretwalda", or King of all England, in 829, but lost Mercia to Wiglaf in 830.

In 836 Egbert suffered a further military setback, being defeated by the Danes. However, he defeated them and their allies, the West Welsh, in 838. He died soon after in 839, and was succeeded by his son Aethelwulf.

He should also be remembered as initiating (at the behest of his wife Redburga) England's policy on immigration, by passing a law forbidding, on pain of death, any Welshman from crossing Offa's Dyke.
Style guide
It appears that Cunnan could use a style guide for how to set out particular pages. For Example the Kingdom Standardisation Project could be adapted to be an SCA group standard style guide. Any thoughts or comments? Yves de Lyle (talk) 15:52, 1 February 2013 (EST)

:The unofficial style guide tended to be me in the past. Others would write the page, normally rare editors who would not have any notion of style. I would make sure all branches started off with something like "The X of C is an SCA group in the Kingdom of Y, mundanely in CITY, COUNTRY". Then I broke the text up when I could, sometimes rewriting it and made sure the homepage link was under External Links, since it wasn't within Cunnan. The actual content depended on what the original author gave us. Things like History and Events were rare or too small to make their own section. Occasionally I had to remove regional point-of-view or change it to third-person perspective (ie. change "we" to "they").

:So yes, you can try and establish a formal style, but other than a sidebar that will be out-of-date very soon if includes seneschal names etc, you probably won't have much to play around. After all, some branches are stub articles with only have one or two sentences that just say their location.
:- Cian Gillebhrath (talk) 23:18, 1 February 2013 (EST)

:My main thought would be to list the elements that should be included in a page (ie the stuff that is unlikely to change quickly). So a side bar with name, device, location, link to homepage/website. and the main part of the article having an overview, history, events (if any), rulers (K&Qs, P&Ps, or B&B), and external links. Other info like current seneschal, current members, current events, etc. change too quickly and would be best placed on the groups homesite.

On the use of Categories
Where should categories be used?

For example; does the category From the Peerless Kitchen need to exist, but can it be a page (Peerless Kitchen) pointing to a bunch of recipes. I ask this because there are currently 5 Unused categories, 182 Uncategorized pages, and 153 Uncategorized categories... Whatever that means. There are categories for people to note the recipes they have redacted, which works against the idea of a wiki. It also appear that most of the articles in :Category:Songs are in fact :Category:Filk. Yves de Lyle 21:16, 30 Jan 2013 (EST)
:Categories work in two directions. If there is a new recipe, the categories help a reader find related recipes. The reader can then move from the category to these other recipes. All that is required is :category:From the Peerless Kitchen on the recipe pafge. Peerless Kitchen can be a page instead, but that would need to be updated, and each recipe page would have to link back to it.
:The recipes are a an awkward point. They are an ongoing project outside the wiki, but their inclusion in the wiki is another project. By indicating which have or haven't been redacted, I imagine it makes the people concerned make sure the two projects can be kept in synch.
:The inclusion of recipes is also very much in tune with the aim of Cunnan - to help medieval reenactment and recreation. Being able to read the original recipe is great, but some may need the help of a redaction. Therefore, having a list of recipes that have been redacted is helpful.
:Some categories are made but no pages have yet been placed in the category. Some categories were started but no description was made of the category. Some categories were started, described but have few entries. Each of these must be evaluated on its own merits, like any page in a wiki. People had ideas and projects that these categories may be part of but may never have been finalised.
Laurel Sovereign of Arms
I was looking at the page that redirects for Laurel and noticed that the Laurel Sovereign of Arms is in a page bound with the College of Arms. Might it be more beneficial to do a dedicated page for Laurel instead of being tied in with the College? Donngal 16:37, 22 July 2010 (EST)
* Sure, since the Principal Herald page is now more substantive. I would make sure that Laurel redirects to Order of the Laurel with a disambiguation at the top for Laurel Sovereign of Arms. The page for LSofA should mention the SCA College of Arms. One of the pages should mention any historical links to similar ranks/titles in the RL Colleges, e.g. Garter King of Arms, Lyons King of Arms
The Illegible Vandals
First it was the Ampersand Bandits. Now we have new class of vandals with a different MO - the Illegible Vandals! We have been getting unknown people adding just one word consisting of 8-10 characters to a range of pages. I believe the choice of characters is random because I don't recognise anything that I would find in any of my dictionaries. So the vandalism is pretty pointless. As far as I can work out, the same "user" has never struck more than once. Wierd. - Cian Gillebhrath 13:39, 27 September 2007 (EST)
:Alas, we're now seeing several articles vandalized by a single IP. It's the sheer volume of IPs involved that concerns me -- we've been hit pretty hard over the last week. Kudos on everyone helping to stem the tide! Paul Matisz 19:05EDT 02 Oct 07

:Yeah, I have since noticed repeat offenders. The thing that gets me is the fact that there seems to be no reason for these attacks. If they were all concentrated at particular times, then I could believe that it is was just an attempt at "denial of service" but there aren't enough of them at any one time for that. Other than restricting editing to logged in members, I can't see how any system can automatically prevent the Illegible Vandals. - Cian Gillebhrath 09:19, 3 October 2007 (EST)

:On 04 Oct between 10:39 and 17:08 some twenty articles were vandalized by these jerks. In some cases, the same article was vandalized numerous times. Given the randomness I suspect this may be some kind of bot or virus... is there any way to defend against them? Paul Matisz 17:15EDT 04 Oct 07

: Attacks today from three different IP addresses from 87.101.244.* . I think we might be able to put a filter on that for a few months. Tobin? Unfortunately, there seems no clear pattern to any of the other addresses. - Cian Gillebhrath 13:09, 9 October 2007 (EST)
Applicability Question
See these Caidan Tourney results: http://wiki.caid-commons.org/index.php/Results

Has Cunnan evolved so far away from its St Monica/Lochac roots that setting up a section under Kingdom of Lochac to support something like the above (but for Lochac) would be a no-go these days? I refer to Village pump discussions mid-2007 on culling some SCA-specific stuff that was seen mainly as ego-boo.

Or would it be fair enough? A wiki is a very good way to maintain this sort of thing; the question is whether we need to set up a whole new one, or use the resource that already exists, but which may no longer be appropriate. (Or, indeed, whether Cunnan would be open to any Kingdoms which wished to use it so).

- Bartholomew 15:02, 9 June 2008 (EST)

: A similar idea has come to me, but instead why not merge the wikis and mirror them across the web.
:* This would reduce the duplication of pages covering the same basic content. Also why would people from any of the following (Midrealm wiki, Compendium Caidis (aka the Caid wiki), An Tir Culturewiki) support the efforts that Cunnan is making or vice versa.
:* The main Medieval & SCA content would fill the main section.
:* Each Kingdom could have a Portal:<Kingdom> to it's own unique flavour
Templates
Greetings all. I have been working with learning the language of templates in MediaWiki and have copied one over from Wikipedia, Template:Information for image files. However, there seems to be a bit of markup that isn't working correctly, as can be seen in <noinclude>:Image:Thomas_Hawley_Clarenceux_King_of_Arms.jpg</noinclude>. If someone can fix this and explain in detail how they went about fixing it, I'd like to be able to fix broken templates myself. Thanks! --Tobias Morgan 13:45, 24 September 2008 (EST)
* I'm sorry but I don't know what error you are talking about. How about you use the Cunnan:sandbox to set up some examples and describe what you were expecting to happen and what has happened. I suspect it might be that Cunnan's MediaWiki version hasn't been updated for 3 or more months. - Cian Gillebhrath 09:14, 25 September 2008 (EST)
** The problem using the sandbox is that the template is primarily used in the Image namespace. If you clickthrough to the Image page listed above then go down to the information section, you can see that it looks odd and cluttered, with bad markup. Whereas if you go to the original image on Wikipedia and look at the information section, it's much cleaner. --Tobias Morgan 12:10, 25 September 2008 (EST)
Wine
* Try C.J. Berry's books available from any good wine making shop or online. - Bcholley, 14 June 2010
Herbs
Would it be possible to merge the herb pages (e.g. borage) with their page of historical quotes (e.g. borage (Maplet))? I think having all those extra pages is superfluous especially seeing as most of the quote pages are only a few lines long. Could they be added to the end of the original herb page with a new heading instead?

* The idea with these entries is that they can be accessed either via the herb, or through the book title, so that one can browse the entries as one would a book. If you look at A Greene Forest and Askham's Herbal you will realise that merging these pages involves an awful lot of work for dubious benefit.

There are limits on a created account, which appears to be why we have many ghost account that do not create or add content. I am working on a way to remove the accounts that do not create content, but since there are over 15,000 of them I do not want to do it by hand. Most of the spammers/spambots are creating User:Talk pages, which are the only ones left open. I'll close that shortly.

Thanks! --Tobias Morgan 13:45, 24 September 2008 (EST)
* I'm sorry but I don't know what error you are talking about. How about you use the Cunnan:sandbox to set up some examples and describe what you were expecting to happen and what has happened. ** The problem using the sandbox is that the template is primarily used in the Image namespace. If you clickthrough to the Image page listed above then go down to the information section, you can see that it looks odd and cluttered, with bad markup.

Re-enactment often refers to non-SCA recreationists that engage in a portrayal that is fairly narrow in time frame and location. This portrayal is usually more homogenous in theme than groups with a wider period. Reenactment groups usually have a minimum standard of equipment and clothing. These are usually not too stringent and new people are able to borrow equipment until they acquire their own and are given support by existing members in meeting these standards.

Other terms used to describe these groups include living history (particularly if the portrayal is very accurate), medievalists, live steel (in America) and metal weapons groups (in Australia).

The latter two are old terms used to describe reenactment groups or societies that recreate ancient and medieval combat using, clearly enough, metal weapons. This distinguishes them from groups such as the SCA which uses rattan and most live roleplaying groups which tend to use some sort of padded weapon. This term is falling into disfavour amongst reenactment groups due to its inference that the only activity available in these groups is combat, and thus is considered by some to be derogatory.

The combat rules often require great care with respect to the speed, placement and strength of each blow due to the danger involved in using metal. Whether this gives a more or less accurate combat simulation than, eg. rattan weapons is an open debate. Proponents of metal weapons combat argue that metal weapons tend look and sound better, whereas supporters of SCA-style claim combat with rattan weapons is more intense and realistic, with fewer concerns about accidental injury. Despite this debate, there is actually considerable crossover between the metal weapons and SCA subcultures.

Variations
In the UK reenactment society events are primarily a battle reenactment with a living history encampment also present. These events are usually open to the public. The US seems to follow a similar pattern.

Australian reenactment groups follow a slightly different pattern: Events are usually closed to the public and run primarily for the reenactor. The event might be for a single group, a group and a selection of others or it might be open to all.

Displays are specifically for the public. There are some larger displays now that incorporate multiple groups, but for the most part they are usually run by just one group (two if they are closely linked).

An arrow is a missile loosed or shot from a bow.

It consists of:

*a head that may be socketed or tanged (the latter particulary prevalent in Viking arrows)

*a shaft (or stele) that may be parallel, barrelled or tapered and for the most part, made of wood.

*flights or fletches that are bound along the length of the feathers and before and aft of the same

*a nock typically cut into the end of the shaft itself and sometimes set with a horn insert. Some Viking arrows have been found with fitted bronze nocks but these bare no resemblance to modern plastic nocks.

The heads can be of many different types. They may be barbed for hunting, bodkins for penetrating some forms of armour or broadheads for cutting others.

The flights for the feathers appear in a number of different shapes, none of which are accurately portayed by modern commercially made fletches. Typical shapes include the stereotypical parallel sided fletches (as a child might draw), curved (a long curve that the modern parabolic seems to be based on but has a deeper leading edge), and after the middle of the 13th century, a triangular shape typically seen in the middle ages. There are some variations on this last shape seen.
Arrows in the SCA
Arrows used for archery and for SCA purposes can be divided into two types.

Sharps
These are used for target archery and, as such, have sharp metal tips or heads. The rules relating to target archery arrows are as follows:

* All shafts shall be of wood or of bamboo-like materials.
* Both self and footed shafts are permitted.
* No broadheads or tips that cause excessive damage to the targets shall be used, except for special competitions using these heads with the permission of the Target Archery Marshal in Charge and the Kingdom Archery Marshal.
* Fletched arrows and bolts shall use feathers or other pre-17th century material. Plastic vanes are not allowed.
* Nocks for arrows, and caps, rings, or nocks for bolts may be of any material, provided they are securely attached.

Blunts
These are used solely for combat archery and are required to meet certain safety standards. These include the use of a rubber stop (a 'blunt') instead of a metal head on the arrow, and the shaft must be taped to prevent injuries from splinters should an arrow break in combat. The requirements for the use of arrows in combat include:
* Arrows must have a blunt head, such as a Markland or... other SCA approved combat blunt. The blunt must have a finished diameter of at least 1 1/4 inches and must not be capable of being forced through the one-inch opening of the bars of a combat-legal helm for more than inch.
* Padding on the face of a blunt which has compacted under use to less than a half- inch in thickness must be replaced.
* Only wood or solid fiberglass shafted arrows are permitted. Shafts should have a minimum diameter of 1/4 inch for fiberglass or 5/16 inch for wood.
* The wood has to be one of three specific types (can't remember exactly but includes oak, cedar and ramen) - of a type which doesn't shatter when broken
* Blunts shall be firmly secured to the shaft so that they cannot come off on impact or if the shaft is broken. All blunts must be secured by at least one strip of 1/2 inch wide (minimum) good quality electrical or strapping tape. This strip shall run over the face of the blunt and down the sides, and onto the shaft for at least one inch. It shall be secured to the shaft by another strip of tape which wraps around it as well as the base of the blunt and the shaft.
* Maximum allowable draw length (bottom of the nock slot to just behind the blunt) is 28 inches (though this is basically dictated by the length of the arrow). Maximum allowable draw weight is 30 pounds of weight at at draw of ?9 inches
* Metal points must be removed prior to mounting blunt points. The front end of the shaft must be flat, not pointed. The use of metal points or sharp shafts will be considered grounds for removing a fighter from the field and/or revoking his/her authorisation.
* The shaft of the arrow shall be spirally or longitudinally wrapped with plastic tape... totally covering the surface from the front of the fletching to the tip of the shaft. The tape should be strong enough so that if the shaft should break, it will still be held together.
* Wood or fiberglass shafted arrows shall be used only after inspection supervised by a marshal. Archers shall be responsible for re-checking the safety of all arrows at the time of use.
* If an arrow is dropped on the field it is considered "dead" and *must* be rechecked at the arrow-check before re-use
* Similarly, if the archer takes a hit to the quiver and the quiver is a soft quiver (i.e. not made of rigid materials) then *all* the arrows in that quiver are considered "dead" until they are rechecked at the arrow-check
* All arrows shall be clearly marked for identification with the name of the user. For interkingdom wars the name of the kingdom shall be included as well to make it easier to locate the maker/owner of the arrows.
* Arrows may only be used as missiles launched from a bow. No arrows shall be used as hand-held thrusting weapons. Such use may be considered grounds for removing a fighter from the field and/or revoking his/her authorisation.
For further details check your copy of the SCA Missile Combat Rules.

Arrows in Re-Enactment
Due to the variety of re-enactment groups, there is no single standard for arrows. Provided below is a summary of some examples of their use in re-enactment in different countries.

Australia
Target Archery
Target archery is done with modern field, target or bullet points. These are used due to the damage done to targets by broadheads, but at specified times broadheads will be used. Shafts are generally accepted to be of wood, fletched with feathers. Plastic nocks are tolerated for target archery by many groups but self nocks, with or without horn inserts (for the appropriate time frame) are preferred.

Display Arrows
Display arrows despite their name are not solely for display, They are also used for testing arrow penetration and target archery as well as being used for display. In general they use forged heads on wooden shafts, feather fletches (often cut from natural feathers), bound with linen thread and have appropriate nocks.

Combat Archery
Combat archery blunts are used for combat archery. They use rubber blunts (HTM and Riverhaven MKII style being preferred), on wooden shafts of 11/32nds of an inch diameter and having no greater than 28 inch draw from the back of the blunt to the nocking point. The end of the shaft which will be inserted into the rubber blunt shall have it's end rounded and it is recommended that shafts be taped with Scotch 898, or equivalent, fibreglass tape from the base of the fletching to the tip of the shaft.

Archery in Combat
Archery in Combat differs from combat archery in that it is only done in set volleys at the beginning of combat and does not require the same standard of protection for the receivers of the missiles. *Wooden arrows up to 28 inches from the back of the blunt to the nocking point, and at least three flights with a total length of not less than 15inches (e.g. 4x4, or 3x5, etc). If possible, the flights should be bound at each end and for their entire length. (Unbound flights will be accepted at present).
*Shafts should be regularly oiled to reduce the risk of shattering.
*Nocks should be carved into the wood. Horn inserts into the nock are acceptable. (Plastic is currently tolerated, but is not desirable and may be refused in future).
*Only genuine rubber archery blunts of an approved type (HTM and Riverhaven MKII) are to be used.

United Kingdom
Combat Blunts
These are used in volleys at the beginning of a battle.
*Wooden arrows up to 28 inches from the back of the blunt to the nocking point, and at least three flights with a total length of not less than 18 inches (e.g. 4x4, or 3x5, etc).
NB: Hastings 2006 is requiring full length feathers on the arrows used in that event.
*Shafts should be regularly oiled to reduce the risk of shattering. Nocks should be carved from horn or into the wood.
*Only genuine rubber archery blunts of an approved type are to be used.

Living History Arrows
Display Arrows
Display arrows despite their name are not soley for display, They are also used for testing arrow penetration and target archery as well as being used for display. In general they use forged heads on wooden shafts, feather fletches (often cut from natural feathers), bound with linen thread and feature appropriate nocks.
Hiya! Sekanjabin is an unusual case because it would certainly classify as a cordial in period - a syrupy medicinal potion - but our modern usage is that of a beverage. I've made some good variations with spice and some fruit flavorings. I suspect any syrup in a well-sealed bottle would be great for field-expedient soft drinks at events. When I get time I'll do a bit on rosa solis which I researched for an A&S even last year.
Well, I majorly updated the Middle again (if it's too long, let me know). As far as I know, most people simply call it "The Middle". Thank you for the link to your article. --Simoncursitor 16:46, 20 Oct 2004 (EST)
*My "system" is only a way of working out the draw. It is up to the competition secretary/Lists Officer to decide what order to arrange each round in. ==Mixed Battles==
I marked Mixed battles as RPOV for two reasons. First, the term itself seems to be a regional usage - at Pennsic for instance battles usually are designated as, eg. "with combat archery" not as "mixed battle." Second, it has some embedded terms which are also regional; specifically the terminology of "light fighter" and the specificity with which it talks about how to kill "lights." Again, using Pennsic as a high-profile example, the combat archery is full-contact (although folks can always just declare themselves dead, of course).

The combination suggests that the term is pretty specifically regional. AlexandreDavigne 11:13, 22 April 2009 (EST)
When the SCA first started, there was a drive to use words that would sound more Medieval to the ear. A word that was quickly incorporated into the SCA vernacular was "autocrat", soon followed by "feastocrat".

In the Middle Ages the person who cooked the meals was usually called the COOK. Within the SCA, there is a growing preference for the historic term, particularly amongst cooks.
Marco Polo was an explorer who wrote a great deal about his travels to China in the 13th century. He claimed he was well received in the court of Kublai Khan but there is little Chinese evidence to verify his presence.

David II was the only surviving son (born 1324) of Robert the Bruce, and succeeded to the throne of Scotland on his father's death in 1329. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of the Earl of Ulster.

His first wife was Joan or Joanna, daughter of the English king Edward II and of Isabella of France (although by the time of the marriage Edward had been deposed, and the marriage was the fruit of Isabella's attempt (supported by her lover Mortimer) to secure the peace with Scotland). He married her in 1328, when he was 4, but this marriage alliance did not prevent his father-in-law from supporting the English usurper Edward Balliol. David was crowned and anointed king in 1331, but by 1333 Balliol, backed by English armies, had advanced far enough for David and his Queen to be sent to France for safety.

There they were made welcome by Philip VI and housed in Richard I's Chateau-Gaillard. In Scotland Balliol squandered what little goodwill he had attracted and by 1341 David was back in Scotland. In 1346, in alliance with France, David invaded England, was defeated and taken prisoner, and spent 11 years in English imprisonment, until in 1357, for 100,000 marks he was ransomed. In fact Scotland was far too poor to pay but it is possible that Edward III's longer-term plan was to seize the kingdom for failure to pay the debt. David, however, successfully distracted him by suggesting he could make Edward or one of his sons the successor to Scotland's throne (a proposal which would never have met with assent among the Scots nobility).

Joan died in 1361-2 and, widowed, David married Margaret, daughter of Malcolm Drummond and widow of Sir John Logie, from whom he was divorced in 1369-70. He had children by neither wife, and had had insufficient time to marry Agnes Dunbar, his mistress. This meant that the Scots succession passed from the House of Bruce, via his sister Marjorie to her husband, Walter, the 6th High Steward of Scotland, thus founding the House of the Stewards, or the Stuarts as they became.

On one hand, David lost almost everything that his father had gained for Scotland; on the other he had to cope with English kings determined to plough Scotland under, and managed to retain his country's independence, despite being first unseated, and then imprisoned.

Edward III was the son of Edward II, who was deposed from the throne of England in 1327, by his Queen, Isabella (the "She-Wolf of France", as she became known), and Isabella's treasonous lover, Roger Mortimer.

To secure their rule, Isabella and Mortimer had Edward crowned forthwith and then, since he was only 14 years old, they set themselves up as regents for him. However Mortimer did little to secure his position with the young king, treating him with contempt, and continuing to use the power he and Isabella had amassed to secure for himself several noble estates. <br>They arranged his marriage, in 1328, to Philippa of Hainault, and she and Edward had a large family, with no less than 9 children suriviving to adulthood, well above the average for their period. His eldest son, born in 1330, was Edward Prince of Wales, who became known (later) as the Black Prince.

Shortly before his 18th birthday, Edward, with the help of a small group of trusted companions, executed a coup d'etat, and seized power. Mortimer was arrested, imprisoned in the Tower of London, and later executed, for his treasons. Isabella was also arrested, but was then simply committed to custody at Castle Rising in Norfolk. She would never regain power, but little by little her imprisonment was eased and her son listened to her counsel.

Edward sought to establish English control over Scotland by imposing a puppet-king, in the shape of Edward Balliol, son of the John whom Edward I had sought to introduce as king. In the event, Balliol's weakness, and the rise of the House of Bruce, meant that Scotland re-established its own monarchical line over the 1330s and 1340s.

At the same time, in the aftermath of the collapse of the line of Capetian kings of France, Edward claimed the French throne, as last male descendant of Philip IV. The French, however, invoked salic law, and made Philip VI their king. Thus began the Hundred Years War and in 1347 English forces captured Calais, the toe-hold on the Continent which they were not to lose until Tudor times.

In 1348 the Black Death struck Europe.

By 1376 the failure, on every front, of Edward's military efforts, and the cost of them, led to a parliament which removed many of the king's advisers (as well as of his mistress, Alice Perrers). By then, however, the Black Prince was dead, and Edward was smitten with the illnesses that would kill him, and the effective government of the realm had fallen to John of Gaunt. Later in that year Edward died and, since the Black Prince had predeceased him, the kingdom fell to his grandson, Richard II.

Retrospect
Edward's reign is seen, by later analysts, as being notable for a number of reasons:
* That he ruled for 50 years, longer than anyone since Henry III
* That his reign saw the rise of the "middle classes" (those neither feudal peasants, nor nobles), and at the same time saw the power held by the nobility increasingly concentrated into fewer hands.
* That it was in his reign that the justices were allowed to try cases, as well as investigate them, thus establishing the fundamental level of the English common law in criminal jurisprudence

His was also the period of the establishment of the Order of the Garter, the transfer of the legal langauge in England from Law-French (which only lawyers understood) to English, thus allowing men to make their own cases before the King's judges, and the flowering in England of the ideals of chivalry (whilst war was carried on with a ruthlessness and fervour utterly alien to that idealism).
