The '''Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr''' is an [[SCA]] [[groups|group]] in the Woodlands Region of the [[Kingdom of Northshield]]. It consists of most of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee_metropolitan_area Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Combined Statistical Area] (ceding certain parts to its northerly neighbors, the [[Shire of Lub Siochail]]) and extending west to include portions of Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

The group's [[name registration|registered name]] was originally ''Caer Anterth''. Upon its elevation to [[barony|Baronial]] status, the group assumed the name ''Caer Anterth Mawr''. This is intended to be an attempt to indicate the elevated status of the group in the [[Welsh]] [[language|tongue]]. This would allow a consistent language usage rather than a mixed language usage, that is, ''Caer Anterth Mawr'' rather than the [[English]]-[[Welsh]] construct, ''the Barony of Caer Anterth''. However, over the years, the two constructs have blended, and the group is generally referred to as ''the Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr''. The first attempts to address this peculiarity resulted in registration as ''Barony of Caer Anterth-Mor''. However, this name was never in general use and, as of August [[2008]], was registered as ''Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr''.

==History==

Caer Anterth was formed as a [[shire]] on 1 October, [[1977]]. It was elevated to Baronial status on 15 September, [[1979]]; Dugall and Rissa were the first to hold the Seat in feoff from the [[Crown]] of the [[Middle Kingdom]]. Caer Anterth Mawr traditionally hosts two annual [[event]]s advertised across the Kingdom. Caer Anterth Mawr's traditional winter event, ''Boar's Head'', was first held in December of [[1978]] and usually falls on the first weekend of December. Caer Anterth Mawr's traditional summer event, ''Border Skirmish'', is held in conjunction with the Middle Kingdom's [[Shire of Ravenslake]], was first held in June [[2004]], and usually falls in the last weekend of June. Additionally, Caer Anterth Mawr hosts a variety of Baronial events, many of which have become traditional for not only the Barony's members, but also for the local [[SCA]] groups. While the number of local events may vary, there are usually at least 4 Baronial events scheduled according to the historical [[England|English]] [[Quarter Day]]s.

Like the group's name, there have been many changes in the [[heraldry]], with all older forms of heraldry still seen upon occasion. The members of the Barony often use the Baronial device minus the laurel wreath as a [[populace]] [[badge]].

To explain the two blazons: the blazon submitted in 1980 was "Azure, a tower between three mullets all argent, in base a triple mount proper charged with a laurel wreath Or." Laurel rewrote it as "Azure, issuant from a hill proper a tower between in cross three mullets argent and a laurel wreath Or." -- adding "Note: A hill is a triple mount. A hill proper is grass covered, and therefore green. The normal prohibition against green proper charges upon blue, and visa versa still stands. As a reward for their excellent documentation on mounts proper I am granting a specific exception to the rule...." [http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/1980/10/lar.htm] (There appeared to have been some confusion among later readers of that blazon, who had not seen the LOAR's note about a hill being a triple mount, and had not seen that artwork, and who thereafter drew the hill as a single mount. Also, artists varied in their placements of the stars/mullets, not always putting the tower "between" the stars so much as "below" it, which would seem unbefitting the name Caer Anterth "Castle of the Zenith / Stronghold of the Heights".) A desire to reduce the number of metals in the arms and thus turn the wreath silver, plus possibly a belief that the "hill" needed to be blazoned more clearly, led to the revised registration in October 1991: "Azure, a tower between three mullets one and two argent and issuant from a trimount vert charged with a laurel wreath argent." Despite all the wording changes, the wreath tincture was the only detail altered thereby.
