A Prior < Latin: former, elder, superior (adj.), before (adv.);) an officer in a monastic order or religious house, sometimes next in rank below an abbot though sometimes the superior of a house and/or community in certain religious orders.

In the Rule of St. Benedict the term prior occurs several times, but does not signify any particular superior; it is indiscriminately applied to any superior, be he Abbot, Provost, Dean, etc. In other old monastic rules the term is used in the same generic sense.
With the Cluniac reform the term Prior received a specific meaning; it supplanted the provost (praepositus) of the Rule of St. Benedict.

The example of the Cluniac congregations was gradually followed by all Benedictine monasteries, as well as by the Camaldolese, Vallombrosians, Cistercians, Hirsau congregations, and other offshoots of the Benedictine Order.

Monastic congregations of hermit origin generally do not use the title of abbot for the head of any of their houses, in an effort to avoid the invovlement with the world the office of an abbot would entail. As a result, it is not in use for the congregation as a whole. Among them, the equivalent term of Prior General is the one used. This applies, e.g., for the Camaldolese and the Carthusians

Castle Siege is a weekend [[camping event]] built upon the theme of [[siege]] warfare. The Silverkeep [[rapier]] [[champion]] [[tourney]] is at this event as is the Shire [[Bardic]] champion. Silverkeep has recently built a 40 x 10 foot wooden [[castle]] to lay [[siege]] upon.

Birthday Bash is Silverkeep's classic event and the event where the Shire ([[heavy]]) champion tourney is held. The "bearpit" of Silverkeep is a well known and beloved tournament of the region . Birthday Bash is themed to a changing time and place, (such as the [[Outremer]] event of 2010). Held at the Lindly Center in Bozeman it is an indoor event with an included [[feast]].

The Holy Curia of Ecclesiastical Reenactors or HCoER is an international group of Ecclesiastic based personas within the [[SCA]] and other reenactment groups.

Founded in 2000, it has nearly 200 members internationally.

'''Households''' are groups within the [[SCA]], usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a [[peer]] will form a household that includes his/her [[apprentice]]s/[[protege]]s/[[squire]]s. Unlike other [[groups]], such as a [[barony]], Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official [[groups]] of the [[Society]], and any "[[membership|membership requirements]]" of a household are at the discretion of the household. Being "unofficial", a household cannot hold official meetings or [[events]], but they are more than welcome to run events ''on behalf'' of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the [[village]]/[[hamlet]] that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

Prior Helmut von Meer

Prior Helmut has been a member of the SCA since 1986, and became a Templar monk in the late 1990's and was invested into the order as a full brother in 1999 at Pennsic by Robert de Tyre. He founded the Priory of Tortosa/Priory of Silverkeep the oldest standing household in the shire.

An ecclesiastical artist known for woodworking and woodcarving (Carved Crozier's, Furniture making and medieval egg tempera painting, Icon Writing (Icon Painting), garb making, Paternosters, Bookbinding, Pavilion Building .Soapstone Carving and Pewter casting of Pilgrims badges, Monastic Seal Matrices, Belt Buckles, Plaque belt plates, Crosses, Elizabethan Paternoster rings, Book cover corners, Shire event site tokens, Clay pilgrims flasks, Pilgrims stave's, 12-13th century sword belts, Armoring, basic Shoe making, Simple Brewing, Tincture and Cordial making, Knife making, Wooden weapon replica making and many other arts mostly related to a monastic circa 1250 ad.

Prior Helmut lives within the Shire of Silverkeep in the Kingdom of Artemisia.

In the last years of the Roman Empire Western Europe was a patchwork of belief systems, most notable among them the [[pagan]] cult of Wotan, the remnants of the Celtic druids and [[Christian]]ity. Having won the conversion of Emperor Constatine some years earlier [[Europe]]an [[Christian]]ity was centred in [[Rome]], and later gained a foothold in [[Ireland]]. (And some people might be offended if you pretend to hold religious beliefs or positions you don't actually hold. While many in the SCA enjoy playing a [[Monk]] or [[Nun]] persona one must not display bigotry by portraying it with satire.) Feel free to carry or wear a rosary/[[paternoster]] or other [[religious]] artifact or costume;, just ''don't force them (or appear to force them) to be a part of your religious observance.'' If you are part part of a religious household/order/other you may hold religious ceremonies in your private tent or groups camp (if all attending agree) but use common sense, no dancing naked around a bonfire for all to see. Discretion and politeness is the key.

One of the most obvious repercussions of this ruling is the ban on certain potentially offensive symbols (e.g. the Swastika, Hand of Glory, etc) in [[SCA]] [[device]]s.

Curiously, many groups turn a blind eye to the practice of venerating [[relic]]s or swearing oaths by certain [[saint]], so long as those relics and oaths are based on fictional [[SCA]] saints like [[Saint Cunard the Tenacious]]. Many households and individuals can and do use real saints though but only as individuals and most often the relic is a mock up to look like a real one (Clay fingers, Plastic skulls, etc) for obvious reasons.

In the last years of the Roman Empire Western Europe was a patchwork of belief systems, most notable among them the [[pagan]] cult of Wotan, the remnants of the Celtic druids and [[Christian]]ity. Having won the conversion of Emperor Constatine some years earlier [[Europe]]an [[Christian]]ity was centred in [[Rome]], and later gained a foothold in [[Ireland]]. Its spread was gradual and by the [[10th century]] [[Christian]]ity dominated [[Europe]].

Shire of Silver Keep

The Shire of Silverkeep is based in Bozeman Montana.

The Shire has two important events, one is the summer event "Castle Siege" and the winter event "Birthday Bash".

Castle Siege is a weekend camping event built upon the theme of [[siege]] warfare. The Silverkeep rapier champion tourney is at this event.

Birthday Bash is Silverkeeps classic event and the event where the Shire (heavy) champion tourney is held. The former "bearpit" of Silverkeep was once held here but has been retired. This event is themed to a changing time and place and is indoors with an included feast.

The Shire has a brewers guild the "Spirits of Silverkeep" that is currently on hiatus until the end of war season.

They have a strong relationship with MSU (Montana State University) and hold fighter practices in winter on Sundays at the SOB Barn. In good weather they hold practice at the Bozeman pond. The University is also where meetings are held.

Throughout the [[Middle Ages]] and prior to the [[Reformation]], the '''Catholic Church''' governed the main form of [[religion]] practiced by people in [[Europe]], namely [[Christianity]].

The Catholic Church is a hierarchy, with the [[Pope]] at the top, then a confusion of offices, including [[Cardinal]]s, [[Bishop]]s or [[Archbishop]]s, and so on down to your local parish priest. It also has [[monastery|Monasteries]], which sit to one side of the administrative structure. The most famous of the monasteries was [[Cluny]], influential in implementing Church reform.

The Church constituted the ''oratores'', 'those who pray' in the three groups of the Medieval order, divided into those who work, those who fight and those who pray.

The Church is notable in that the Pope is elected by the College of Cardinals (usually, but having an [[army]] in [[Rome]] helps your candidate get up though).

The Pope often got into arguments with the [[King]] of [[France]] or the [[Emperor]] of [[Germany]] over their respective rights, for example whether the State has the right to [[tax]] the clergy, and if so does it need their consent.

The [[SCA]] chooses not to practice [[religion]] in an organised sense, and in particular the articles of [[Corpora]] prevent the forcing of any person's [[religious beliefs]] on any other person within the SCA. Therefore the institutions of the Catholic Church or any other [[Church]] are difficult to re-enact within the SCA.

That said many do this successfully in an unofficial capacity (like with households) forming monasteries, abbeys and the like. Monk's and Nun personas are growing more common while those playing "Bishops" are quite rare. A persona based upon the [[Clergy]] of the Church is both a viable and valid persona.
