A mercenary is a warrior who fights for money,
without concern for loyalty to national or ethnic identity. Long
before standing armies, mercenaries would sell their
services to the highest bidder, becoming valued professional
soldiers.

Medieval Mercenaries
In medieval times, mercenary companies were extremely
common. These soldiers would be hired as a complete unit, and
fielded as such. The Genoese crossbowmen at the
Battle of Crecy were such, as were the late-medieval
Italian condotteri (literally "contractors").

Other examples of medieval mercenary companies included the
Varangian Guard of Constantiople and so-called free-lancers: mounted horsemen with no fealty to a specific
lord, literally a "free lance" who could be hired into service.

In period they were used to supplement (or substitute for) a kingdom's army :: their main drawback lay in the fact that, once the principle of fighting for money had been established, it was not long before the concept came along of changing sides in return for more money.

At one stage medieval Europe was lousy with mercenary companies, led by the like of Sir John Hawkwood, who had elevated their art from fighting for money (and spoil) to not despoiling a territory if they were given enough money to go elsewhere (qv Danegeld)

While highly sought after as skilled and disciplined warriors, they
were often reviled as being honorless hirelings. Mercenaries'
value was increased by the fact that the feudal rule of "forty
days' military service" did not apply to them: they would be
obliged to fight as long as they continued to be paid.

Modern Mercenaries
Most modern mercenaries are more like security consultants
than combatants. The notion of a mercenary company along medieval lines is extinct, except for one notable exception: the Swiss Guards of the Vatican are still a mercenary company along medieval lines. However, the terms of their contract is extremely long-term, and not likely to change anytime soon.

Mercenaries in the SCA
The romantic image of the "Soldier of Fortune" has spawned many
mercenary households in the SCA, such as Iron Lance, Concusare, and Perchainne. Usually these households are hired by the
crown or other nobles for war events such as
Pennsic. Under such circumstances, mercenaries are usually
paid in useful goods (rattan, armour, fabric), SCA currency and beer.

There are some households known as "Allied" households, who are not tied to a specific Kingdom but are also not "hired" in any way. This can be for many reasons, such as having a nomadic household persona, having members in more than one Kingdom who would like to fight as a unit, or being from a non-SCA organization that occassionally participates in the SCA on masse at events like the Pennsic War. They may make an alliance with a given Kingdom for the term of a war event or a reign but are not paid for it, and are not considered mercenaries. Some examples of Allied households include the Great Dark Horde, the Rozakii, and the Tuchux.
For Norman personas, it is interesting to note that in the 12th Century old french romance of Beroul's Tristan the terms mestre and magistre are used for the male and female advisors (respectively) who were the childhood teachers of the protagonists. (line 381 and 345)

There are two feminine alternatives for the French title of knight: chevaleresse and chevalière. One being a knight in her own right, the other being a woman who holds the rank of knight due to status.
Wild Boar
Sus scrofa scrofa is the scientific name for the wild boar. Once common in Europe they have more recently been reintroduced into some European countries. Adult wild boar grow to around 200 kg for males and around 130kg for the females and have short bristly hair. Males develop tusks after around two years of age.

Wild boars are currently bred for their meat in Britain and recently animal right extremists released 60 in late December 2006 into the wild where another 500 are thought to exist. This caused panic and fear amongst the locals as the animals ran through local villages.

Despite what the animal rights extremists believed about their possible poor treatment as least one little piggy went all the way home and let himself back into the original property.

Boar Hunting
The wild boar was considered the premiere animal for medieval hunter to prove his prowess.

Note -- boar spears
The boar tends to attack by charging and goring with its teeth and tusks. The boar spear is intended to counter this, by being thrust into the boar as it charges. The large cross piece just below the blade of the head is there to hold the animal at bay so that it will not gore you.

Heraldic Boar
Like many other common medieval European animals, the boar was used in heraldry most memorably perhaps by King Richard the Third.

rpov
The word University is derived from the Latin word for "guild". The church established schools with the purpose of educating people in a particular profession (a non-trade profession), and then universities arose purely for "higher education". In the Middle Ages, it was mostly churches or courts who had the better book collections of the times, so therefore those involved with these institutions (who were mostly those with lots of money, or those who could obtain patronage from the same) therefore had access to higher education.

Universities in Europe
The first university, Al-Azhar, was founded in Cairo, Egypt in 970AD.

The first university founded in Europe was the one in Bologna, in 1088AD, which was followed up with more being founded predominently in Italy, France, England and Spain (during the 1100s) and later in Germany and Austria (1300s). They had various faculties, as they do today. Note that the age of a university does not necessarily reflect on its status.

The premiere theology university of medieval Europe was the University of Paris at Notre Dame, but Bologna was the place to go for Law, and Palermo for Medicine. In England, Oxford and Cambridge weren't bad. Most medieval universities, and students at them, were supported by the Catholic Church, or by bequests from the rich and the pious. University students had a fair amount of control over the faculty and started to organise themselves as nations (people of like cultural origin or language). Brawls between local townspeople and students were not unknown. A successful university career was often a stepping-stone to important positions at Court or in the Church.

Universities in the SCA
SCA groups may be based at modern universities and are referred to as a college. These are often a popular recruitment base for the Shire or Barony in which the College lies. In the East Kingdom, these groups are often referred to as Boroughs.

In New Zealand the use of the word University is reserved for actual government acredited institutions approved to use that name, and therefore the Kingdom of Lochac does not use the word "University" to describe any of its internal institutions.

The word "university" can also be used in the SCA to refer to an institution offering semi-structured courses of learning about medieval facts or crafts.

* The kingdom of An Tir has the kingdom-wide University of Ithra
* The East runs Universities as focused events which specifically emphasize scholarly learning.
* Æthelmearc offers classes in the martial and gentle arts at twice-yearly Æcademies.
* The University of Atlantia offers degrees to those who meet its qualification for teaching and attending classes at its sessions, which are held two or three times per year.
* Meridies holds class and offers degrees through the RUM (Royal University of Meridies)
* The Royal University of the Midrealm (http://www.midrealm.org/rum/) is also called the RUM and is held annualy or semi-annualy depending on interest.
This clothing is related to the houpelande, characterised by an outer garment which is very large and falls in many folds from the shoulders. Distinguishing features from the houpelande is the narrow body with a v-shaped opening at the front and typically tightly fited sleeves, often with a turned back cuff. It is best known for the tall headress worn by women called by modern costumers a Hennin which evolved into the iconographic "Princess hat"
