Can you take that comment and do your HTML trick to make it a side-note to the bullet point above about greek texts? Hi Tobin -- I noticed the article on Cunnan at Wikipedia, and dropped by to check it out. Very cool! I also noticed the authorship discussion. And you will have noticed that your recipe pages are a mess too. Also, your change of the name Æthelmearc on the Kingdom page made no difference to me. Hi, I am a librarian at Central Michigan University and I added links to several of your pages dealing with national histories (see France and Germany). I was amused by the comical history attempts on the prior pages and thought I would add a link to better the histories. I was quite mystified to see these labelled as possible link spam. :]

I was going to blog Cunnan at my information literacy blog (lorenzen.blogspot.com) pointing out how outsiders can improve flawed history sites but if you think I am spam...

I appreciate your link vigillance. Could you let me know how you determine real link adds from spam? (Note what you reply may be used on my blog.)

Thanks,

Metahacker: /* Universities in the SCA */ rearranging, adding EK POV

The word University is derived from the Latin word for "guild". The church established schools with the purpose of educating people in a particular profession (a non-trade profession), and then universities arose purely for "higher education". In the Middle Ages, it was mostly churches or courts who had the better book collections of the times, so therefore those involved with these institutions (who were mostly those with lots of money) therefore had access to higher education.

Universities in Europe
The first university, Al-Azhar, was founded in Cairo, Egypt in 970AD.

The first university founded in Europe was the one in Bologna, in 1088AD, which was followed up with more being founded predominently in Italy, France, England and Spain (during the 1100s) and later in Germany and Austria (1300s). They had various faculties, as they do today. Note that the age of a university does not necessarily reflect on its status.

The premiere theology university of medieval Europe was the University of Paris at Notre Dame, but Bologna was the place to go for Law, and Palermo for Medicine. In England, Oxford and Cambridge weren't bad. Most medieval universities, and students at them, were supported by the Catholic Church, or by bequests from the rich and the pious. University students had a fair amount of control over the faculty and started to organise themselves as nations (people of like cultural origin or language). Brawls between local townspeople and students were not unknown. A successful university career was often a stepping-stone to important positions at Court or in the Church.

Universities in the SCA
SCA groups may be based at modern universities and are referred to as a college. These are often a popular recruitment base for the Shire or Barony in which the College lies. In the East Kingdom, these groups are often referred to as Boroughs.

In New Zealand the use of the word University is reserved for actual government acredited institutions approved to use that name, and therefore the Kingdom of Lochac does not use the word "University" to describe any of its internal institutions.

The word "university" can also be used in the SCA to refer to an institution offering semi-structured courses of learning about medieval facts or crafts. The kingdom of An Tir has the kingdom-wide University of Ithra; the East runs Universities as focused events which specifically emphasize scholarly learning.

Metahacker: adding some examples of ECD, brief description of the dances themselves

English Country Dance is the common name for dances propagated by John Playford and later his sons and other heirs in the book titled The English Dancing Master (later renamed to The Dancing Master). This style of dancing evolved in England, most likely from the Branle, and eventually spread to France and Germany and later to the New World, and even Australia. Bush dances such as Strip the Willow are included in later editions of The English Dancing Master.

It was published in 1651 and is theoretically outside of the SCA period but is commonly done in the SCA anyway. English Country Dance can properly be thought of as early Baroque Dance rather than Renaissance Dance. There are references to dances with some of the same names as those in Playford before 1600, although from the description of a couple of these it is clear that the dance was significantly different from those later printed by Playford.

The reconstructed dances are somewhat similar in form, usually being for sets of two, three, or four couples, consisting of a verse-and-chorus structure. The three "verse" sections tend to involve processing up and back in the first verse; siding in the second; and arming in the third. However, this is at best a general guideline.
