Kidnapped and press ganged and taken from home
Brought to a foreign land scared and alone
I don’t know why I’m here or who I fight for
Why am I fighting another man's war?
So come on now with me boys sing a sad song
We’ll all be dead before long
Tomorrow’s the battle we’ll fight and we’ll die
Raise up your horns to the sky
Raise up your horns to the sky
My sword and my shield are my only friends
Sending the foemen to untimely ends
Though I do not hate them I will end their lives
How many men won’t go home to their wives?
Raise up your horns to the sky
The enemy’s running we’ve beaten them down
Our knights killed their king and have taken his crown
Their women are crying, their soldiers lie dead
High on a pike rides their general’s head.
Long years ago I fought in the wars
No matter the king, no matter the cause
I bled my times for the promise of gold
I never thought I’d grow old
Now my sword is old and is rusty
My shield it hangs on the wall
My helmet is dented and dusty
No more do I heed the battlecall
The northmen came raiding for gold and for slaves
Striking like lightning from over the waves
For a handful of silver I defended gods town,
That day I won coin and renown
Now my sword is old and is rusty
My shield it hangs on the wall
My helmet is dented and dusty
No more do I heed the battlecall
I’ve fought in the front lines and led great companies
In battles at home and far over the sea
I dreamed of the fighting I lived for the kill
Some nights now I dream of it still
Now my sword is old and is rusty
My shield it hangs on the wall
My helmet is dented and dusty
No more do I heed the battlecall
My hair has turned silver my arms have grown frail,
Too weak now to lift up my old shirt of mail
The clamour of battle still rings in my ears
Old age was the one thing I feared
Now my sword is old and is rusty
No more do I heed the battlecall
The young men are leaving to fight a new war
Brave banners are flying and battlecries roar
I’ll muster my strength and I’ll steady my breath
And march one last time into death
Now my sword is old and is bloody
I'll be back someday, but when I don't know
The work must go on, with no hand to hold

Death's Lovers is a song written by THL Finnbjorn Skeggason for the reign of King Thibault I and King Jayne I in A.S. 57. It was first performed at a bardic circle at Rowany Festival that year, and has since become a popular SCA song in Lochac.

----

Lyrics:
Gather the spears, assemble the banners
With sword and with hammer, we're marching to war
Load up the train, then bring round the horses
Oh, such gallant forces, hath ne'er seen before
So raise up a glass my sisters and brothers
Drink each to the other, and I'll drink to thee
When death walks the field and chooses her lovers
There's none that I'd rather have standing with me
Out on the field, the foemen stand ready
Their noble hearts heavy, 'ere the blood starts to flow
Would that we'd met round fire or table
And maybe been able the other to know
So raise up a glass my sisters and brothers
Drink each to the other, and I'll drink to thee
When death walks the field and chooses her lovers
There's none that I'd rather have standing with me
Charge down the line, let's make a story
Of valour before we are laid in the ground
The honour is mine, that we fought together
Although we may never hear victory sound
So raise up a glass my sisters and brothers
Drink each to the other, and I'll drink to thee
When death walks the field and chooses her lovers
There's none that I'd rather have standing with me
Hold your shields high, defending each other,
Till we lose another, and the bloodbath begins
Into the fray, I'll stand by your side
Until they've all died and the feasting begins
So raise up a glass my sisters and brothers
Drink each to the other, and I'll drink to thee
When death walks the field and chooses her lovers
There's none that I'd rather have standing with me
Wade through the gore, claiming their colours
And burying brothers, my heart full of dread
Would that I’d died, and lain with the others
Than to see your dead eyes staring blankly ahead.
So raise up a glass my sisters and brothers
Drink each to the other, and I'll drink to thee

Hej Sokoły ("Zofia's Song") is a filk of the polish folk song Hej Sokoły, written by THL Finnbjorn Skeggason for the elevation of Metressa Zofia Varsoviensis to the Order of Defence in A.S. 59. It became popular to sing afterwards in its own right, with people continuing to perform it after Zofia moved from Lochac to other parts of the Known World.

When performed, the first two "hey"'s of the chorus should be punctuated by the crowd then yelling "hey" on the off-beat.
Casa De Fiore, is a household in Lochac founded by Dytryk Lehrer and Zofia Varsoviensis in order to bring together enthusiastic and dedicated Scadians that wanted to do and make things, but perhaps did not have the resources. Most members reside in Innilgard. They are known for travelling in groups to events outside of their Barony, arriving early, and staying late to help with as many things as possible.

At all non-catered events in their home barony of Innilgard, they provide homemade soup and bread to anyone who wants some. At the beginning of the event, they declare their presence by announcing “events are good with friends but they're better with food. Fiore's Garden is open.” There is also often a sitting area associated with the Garden.

The One True Carrot is a mascot and relic of the College of St Ursula. The legend came into being one Rowany Festival, and since then the story has grown in magnificence, becoming more exaggerated with each retelling. Members of St Ursula show their allegiance to the carrot through eating carrots, wearing plush carrots through their belt, and other such carrot-related shenanigans.

The College of Blessed Herman the Cripple, the long-time rival of St Ursula, is known to have a banner depicting a goat inpaling a carrot on a spear.

In A.S.56, at Rowany Festival, an Ursulan purchased a Hermanite fencer for the fighter auction tourney, and had them wear a bandolier of carrots held together by fibre tape for the duration of the tournament.

The Legend of the One True Carrot
This is the full and properly embellished story as told by Matthijs van der Horst in the newly founded SCA Colleges Network server on the 28/11/2024, in order to bring the story to our international bretheren.

"Alright gather round and pray heed to the tale. Our college historians have delved the archives and chased down leads of hearsay to trace this true account back to the dim dark era in the early days of Lochacian colleges - way back around AS XXVII (1993).

The College of Saint Ursula, the first and greatest of Lochacian colleges, routinely takes on the mantle of caring for the other fledgling colleges. At the largest kingdom event - Rowany Festival - we are known to host the other college groups as they converge on our parent barony.

I'm not sure how wars/camping events are run in your kingdom(s), but for this one each group camping together traditionally organises it's own food as a small collective. The Ursulans had most of this all sorted - main meals and cooking equipment and such had all been sorted and transported and set up with nary a hitch. All that remained was for a few extra bits and pieces to pad out the menu. Easy enough, right?

So. The great and glorious college leadership at the time did send a missive to each of the carriages in their fleet, transporting collegians from the city to the camp. It was a few hours drive outside of Sydney, and so most people were car pooling. Each car was asked to grab and bring along an extra something to eat. Being uni students, well versed in the art of leaving everything till the night before, many of them set out with nothing in hand - "we will grab something on the way, we've got a $10 budget (a more significant amount in yon times), we'll just pick some up when we stop."

Very reasonable, on all accounts. Now, still being uni students, they were wily with gold and knew to make it go a long way. Nobody wanted to be the car that squandered their $10, so their eyes were sharp for a deal.

Lo, behold, on that route from city to site, by the side of the road not far into their journey lay the stall of an enterprising farmer. There were many fine examples of fresh produce on display, and many a hearty option, being the height of autumn. The first college vehicle to pass pulls up and gauges the options. Plenty of choice, but one stood out - an extra large market bag of carrots. Serendipitously, for $10. What a deal. A large sack. A catering quantity. They would walk into camp lauded as thrifty and wise, bringing tasty nutrition at such incredible value. They handed over their $10 and bundled these carrots into the car and set off on their way.

On to the second vehicle, leaving town not far behind them. Lo and behold, what do they find by the side of the road, but a harvest stall with all manner of bounteous produce. Many good deals, but what's this? An enormous sack of carrots for precisely the budget we were allocated? Almost too good to be true. Surely no other car will attain a deal comparable to this. Surely those other fools did their shopping early and paid high prices for worse food in lower quantities. Those buffoons.

But alas dear reader. None of them had gone to the supermarket. Every single car charged with this mission was swayed by this perfect storm. Each crew that arrived to campsite triumphantly bearing their slab of carrots was dismayed to find that they were not as cunning and original as planned. The growing concern as every single car arrives, and unloads the next allocation of foods: a mass of bulk carrots. Again.

It could be worse! At least it was such a worthy and robust vegetable such as the carrot. Carrots cooked every way. Carrots in every dish. Carrots raw. Carrots as tools, art, culture. Throughout the event there were carrots everywhere. Upon entering college campgrounds (even to visit), one must accept a carrot. Upon leaving, one must take a carrot with them.

Great masterpieces were constructed of carrots. Shields for the Warfield. Helm adornments for tournaments. Songs were written of carrots, singing their praises. They are sung to this day - strike up a chorus of "Ursulans Gather Your Carrots" in the tavern of Rowany festival, and alumni abound will appear and join in.

The most significant carrot of all - the one true carrot - the progenitor, the first and greatest of carrots, as Ursula is to colleges in Lochac. This carrot was not cast off as the others. It was set aside, prized. Some say worshipped. It was preserved in a sealed vessel of strongest spirits - allegedly distilled from the finest (author note: absolutely godawful) carrot wine.

From that day onwards, each new seneschal would partake of a shot of the spirits suspending the One True Carrot. This annual tradition was brought to a halt in AS XLI (2006), when the now-Master Padraig Lowther did consume his ascension tipple. The spirits of the carrot took him on a journey, and did speak to him: "Please No. This is Probably Toxic. You Have to Stop."

Thereafter the one true carrot faded into obscurity, with only the legend living on in our songs and meals - carrots remaining a common part of the Ursulan diet. Under my tenure as seneschal, in AS LI (2016) I began a project to recover it, tracing seneschals back until we could find where it had been passed. This multi year project culminated when it was located and passed to Arthur Fairall, who constructed a fine reliquary in which the One True Carrot currently resides, restored and re-preserved, but sealed so that none may ingest its dubious wisdom.

Anyway yeah Ursulans like carrots and this is why."

Contributions to the conversation from other Lochacian collegians would like it to be noted that there is some bias to this story, including, from Aife ingen Cathail (the seneschal for St Christina at the time):

"Oh, but the Ursulans lie to you, dear fellows. It is not their fault. It is truly damaging to their college for the truth to come out. But alas, I cannot let this go unchallenged. Master Padraig did consume the brew of the One True Carrot. But, it's said, he was too eager. Too bold. He took the carrot whole. And as the one who swallowed it, the mantle of the One True Carrot passed onto him. And now he resides in Innilgard, and the shame has become unbearable for those who miss the keystone of their college. So they will spin yarns about "it was a health hazard" and "no, Paddy didn't swallow a carrot whole, what?" to protect their college's reputation."

Mattijas' response included the following:

"I have no doubt that Paddy was more than willing /and/ able to consume the One True Carrot in its entirety, but alas he did not. I have myself laid eyes upon the One True Carrot in the original vessel. It was not as whole as it perhaps once was, but /was/ in approximately the state that I'd expected a 30 year old amateur-preserved carrot to be in."

The other comment of significance related to the claim early in the story, that the College of St Ursula is the first college of Lochac, which as noted elsewhere is disputed by the College of Blessed Herman the Cripple and the recorded history of the kingdom .

Origin of the myth
This is the (slightly less embellished) story as it is told by Master Padraig "Paddy" Lowther on the Lochac website here. In the interests of preserving this text in case that page goes down, the story has been repeated here in full.

"Many moons ago, the Ursulans were off to Festival, and decided to car-pool. The food fund folk had pre-bought stuff like the meat, rice, bacon and eggs, and told each car to get 15 bucks worth of vegies. Each car took the same highway to site, and so passed the same discount fruit and veg stand with the sign that read “Carrots: 10c a kilo.” And so it came to pass that a camp of around a dozen people had 30-odd kilos of carrots to their name.

The rule was that no-one left camp unless they had a carrot with them. Need the privy at midnight? take a carrot to munch on the way. Off to war? Tape some to your helm. Bring someone home to your tent from the tavern? Not only do they get breakfast, but they get a carrot or ten to remember you by.

Carrots were strapped to shields, worn through belts as favours, used to barter with merchants, thrown at tourney participants who had not died well, planted in the armour of tourney participants who had died well so that the carrots could go strong in honour; ye gods, they even ate some of the carrots! Tangwystl, who was seneschal then, wore one through her belt the whole event. After copping some hits in war and tourney it was held together with duct-tape; thus it became known as the One True Carrot, by which all other carrots are measured and found to be wanting.

At the end of the event this carrot was embalming in a mix of liquor so foul and dodgy not even engineering students would drink it. This is still in the College Reliquary, and it was tradition to have the incoming do a shot of the embalming fluid so that they might see a spirit vision and Know the Will of the One True Carrot. As Kids Are Now Soft, I believe I am the last to have done this and know the Dark and Carroty Dreams wrought in its vegetative mind as it tumbles in its turgid tank of terrible tipple; it craves the irrigation of the carrot patches by the Blood of the Vile Hermanite."

Embellishments and Rumours
Over the years, various tellings have added embellishments or other unverified elements to this story, some of which are:
* Paddy drank the entire jar, including the carrot
* Drinking the entire contents of the jar put Paddy in a 3 day coma and/or "spiritual journey", wherein he then recieved the Wisdom and Knowledge of the Carrot.
* Paddy now IS the One True Carrot (many Ursulans, and Paddy himself, will back this up)
* It was 50 kilos of carrots. No it was 120kgs. No, 30kgs.
* The University of Sydney discovered the Carrot, and made St Ursula throw it away

Merry Otter: Expanded on difference between types of princes, & updated pronouns to be more gender-inclusive

A prince is member of the nobility. It is a title used to indicate varying levels of rank. Many presently take it to mean that a prince is a male member of the royal family. However, that was not always so. It was not originally exclusively used for males. Queen Elizabeth I was refered to as "a prince admirable above her sex" by William Camden, her historian.

Princes in the SCA
There are two types of princes in the SCA, Crown Princes and "Princes Regnant" (or "landed Princes" or "ruling Princes"). They are usually referred to as Your Highness or Your Royal Highness.

A Crown Prince is the heir of a kingdom. They achieve this position by victory in a Crown tournament, either by their own hand or that of their consort. The usual term of a Crown Prince is three months, after which they will step up to become the King or Monarch of their Kingdom. Crown Princes are permitted to use the heir's version of the Kingdom arms (often distinguished by a label of three points) and coronets until their coronation.

A Prince Regnant is one of the couple currently ruling a principality. They may have achieved this position through victory in a Coronet tournament by their own hand, or by being consort to the victor of a Coronet tournament. Princes are permitted to display the principality arms and coronet for the duration of their reign.

When a Prince Regnant steps down they become a Viscount, regardless of how many times they have ruled, unless they are already a Count or a Duke.

(SCA humor: Someone who has been Prince once is a Viscount, twice is a Biscuit and three times is a Triscuit)

The SCA recognises the following alternate titles in other languages as the equivalent to Prince:

Merry Otter: Updated some of the language to improve inclusivity

Clan Blue Feather is a large open household within the SCA dedicated to education and research on homosexuality in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and to teach other members of the Society about homosexuality in the Current Middle Ages.

The Clan also exists as a social organization, to facilitate interaction among the members of the SCA, especially those who identify as LGBTQIA+ or Queer.

Unlike some SCA groups, Clan Blue Feather has no official leader, or group of leaders. Group activities are organized by consensus or by an interested person. Particular events and gatherings may have certain people in charge, but this is only in the context of that event. There is no official "leader of Clan Blue Feather."

Members are united solely by a common interest, and not necessarily a common sexual orientation. They include:

* Those with an interest in homosexuality in the Middle Ages
* Those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, asexual, aromantic, queer, or otherwise within the Queer/LGBTQIA+ community.
* Family, friends and supporters of the above
* Those who simply want to meet, camp with, or otherwise socialize with other members

The registered badge of the Clan is Argent, a feather azure. By custom and tradition, LGBTQIA+ members of the Clan wear a badge with a dark blue feather, while straight family, friends and supporters/allies wear a light blue feather. Simply wearing a blue-dyed feather IS NOT an identifying mark.

The Clan has a Royally chartered Guild in the East Kingdom and in Caid.

The Great Duck
The Great Duck is a (lighthearted) mythological figure tied closely to the College of St Christina the Astonishing, that takes the form of a giant duck. Legend has it that the deity-like figure will come to St Christina in the college's hour of need. Collegians pay their respect to the Duck by quacking at appropriate moments (after court, or whenever the College or ducks are mentioned), or by doing anything else generally associated with, or involving, ducks.

Inspiration may have come from the song "Moby Duck" by the Longest Johns

Summoning Ritual
The most common Summoning Ritual practiced is known as "Duck Duck Goat", and was first attempted at Inter-College War XXV. The "duck duck" refers, of course, to The Great Duck, and the "goat" is a reference to the College of Blessed Herman the Cripple, who is associated with goats through their mascot Fred the Fire Breathing Goat of Doom.

How "Duck Duck Goat" works is a lot like the game of "Duck Duck Goose". Summoners sit in a circle, with one person who is chosen to be 'in'. Traditionally a small rubber duck is placed in the centre to be a vessel of The Great Duck should They chose to appear, but this isn't necessary if no small duck is on hand. The person who is 'in' walks clockwise on the outside of the circle, touching each person on the head as they pass, and saying "duck". Eventually, they choose someone and say instead "goat". Then the person named "goat" jumps up, and attempts to chase the person who's 'in' around the circle, still clockwise. If the person who is 'in' manages to sit down in the 'goat' person's spot, that person is now 'in'. If the 'goat' person manages to catch the person 'in' however, they may return to their spot, and the person 'in' must try again from the beginning. The game then repeats in this fashion.

Note: The Great Duck, nor the followers of The Great Duck, are liable for any injuries caused by attempting to summon it. Play at your own risk.

The College of St Christina the Astonishing
The College of St Christina the Astonishing is an SCA College in the Barony of Innilgard in the Kingdom of Lochac. It is based at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. It was first established in 1990, but after a few years, fell into a long period of dormancy. It was revived in 2021, and has been active ever since. You can find their website here.

St Christina’s motto is ex cinera volumus - “from ashes we fly”, likening the miraculous revival to a phoenix’s flight. This was chosen by popular vote in 2022, and replaced the original motto duo capita plura sunt quam unum – “two heads are better than one”.

The college device has a depiction of Flessie (Flinders Nessie), the sea serpent that lives in the lake on campus. St Christina is also commonly associated with ducks - in the full coat of arms, the device is supported by two pacific black ducks, known as “Cheese” and “Quackers.” The association is also perpetuated by the legend of The Great Duck - a giant duck that is said will come to the College in its hour of need. Members have been known to try and summon it using the game of “duck duck goat”, and to make quacking noises when appropriate (such as after court, or whenever they feel like it). They have also claimed the dance known as petit vriens due to its colloquial name of the "duck dance", named for it's close resemblance to a line of ducks.

The college is closely allied with College of Blessed Herman the Cripple. After a brief period of war in A.S.56 (see: Inter-College War XXV), the two colleges signed a peace treaty, and have been friends ever since. In acknowledgement of Blessed Herman proving the superior force in battle, the clause was added that the banners of St Christina cannot be larger than the average size of Blessed Herman banners. The treaty also protects summoners of The Great Duck from any Hermanites harbouring anti-duck sentiments. (Which doesn't make sense anyway, I mean, have you seen how cute ducks are?)

Hagiography
Saint Christina is the patron saint of millers, bakers, mental health workers, and people with mental disorders. The college founders chose her because “she sounded kinda crazy, and that appealed to us at the time”. Her feast day is the 24th of July.

The College of Blessed Herman the Cripple is an SCA College in the Barony of Innilgard in the Kingdom of Lochac. It is based at the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia. As the first College and one of the first groups established in Lochac, it has a very old and rich history. According to official paperwork, it was the first college in Lochac to be founded , though this claim is disputed by the College of St Ursula.

The first Queen of Lochac, Duchess Guðrun, is a former scholar and Seneschal of the college, and during her second reign as Queen, gave Blessed Herman the right to refer to itself as "The Queen's College".

The college has played a large part in the Inter-College Wars, both as a host and regularly the victor. Often known as "the Friendly College", their mascot is Fred, the Fire Breathing Goat of Doom. Assisting Fred is Oscar the Ram. They are also known for their "Book of Knowledge", depicted on their heraldry, and currently embodied in a ceramic cup in the shape of a book. Due to the fact it can hold alcohol, the Book is often referred to as "spirited" - apt, considering the college has historically had strong ties with drinking culture. The college is also known for being intensely humble - they're just superior to everyone else in that way.

The college is closely allied with College of St Christina the Astonishing. The treaty also requires St Christina to recognise the Book of Knowledge as being "sacred" to Blessed Herman.

Hagiography
Blessed Herman the Cripple was a mathematician, musician and monk. He suffered from a paralytic disease, so his parents gave him to a Benedictine monastery as a child, where he became well schooled in several languages, mathamatics, astronomy, and more. More information can be found on his Wikipedia page.

The college's feasting day is generally held around his death date, the 24th of September 1054.

Origin of the myth
This is the story as it is told by Master Padraig "Paddy" Lowther on the Lochac website here.

This is the story as it is told by Master Padraig Lowther on the Lochac website here. In the interests of preserving this text in case that page goes down, the story has been repeated here in full.

Many moons ago, the Ursulans were off to Festival, and decided to car-pool.

As Kids Are Now Soft, I believe I am the last to have done this and know the Dark and Carroty Dreams wrought in its vegetative mind as it tumbles in its turgid tank of terrible tipple; it craves the irrigation of the carrot patches by the Blood of the Vile Hermanite.
