[[The Crown Province of Ostgardr]] encompasses the 5 boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island) as well as Nassau County and Westchester and Putnam counties. It is the original home of the [[East Kingdom]], since when some SCA folks moved east about 1968 or so, they settled in New York.

Ostgardr is the only [[Crown Province]] in the East Kingdom, and it is a province rather than a barony because the early kings of the east mostly lived in or around New York City. When, one day the gentle who won crown tournament did not live in New York or its environs, it was decided that the lands the king had held for himself would be administered by a [[Viceroy]] and/or [[Vicereine]], who would hold those lands directly at the king's behest.

There have been 4 viceregal tenures in the history of the province, and soon there will be a fifth. [[Ian Mitchell of Clan Mitchell]] and [[Katherine Gillesfleur]] have been the Viceroy and Vicereine of Ostgardr for almost 27 years, starting in 1979. They will be succeeded by Alexandre Lerot d'Avigne and Eularia Trewe on Saturday, AS XLI, September 9.

The province has 3 cantons within it and one incipient canton as of this writing. [[Lion's End]] encompasses Nassau County, Long Island; [[Northpass]] encompasses Westchester and Putnam counties north of the city limits; [[Whyt Whey]] is the island of Manhattan; and Brooklyn has the incipient canton of [[Brokenbridge]].

Canton of Whyt Whey

The Canton of Whyt Whey is defined by the borders of the county of New York (Manhattan Island).

The origins of the Canton of Whyt Whey lay in the back yard of Sir Edward Zifran of Gendy in the 1980's. He would hold fighter practice back there and afterwards everyone would go to a restauant across the street called P.J. Reynolds (now defunct). Eventually the fighter practice was no longer held at his house, but the gathering at the restaurant on Tuesday nights remained.

Sometime about 1988, someone looked around and said words to the effect of "hey, we could start a canton here!" The original thought was to call the canton "Grate Whyte Whey" as a pun on the misspelling of [[Ostgardr]] that would mean "cheese farm" and the nickname for Broadway. The heralds allowed only the last two words to be the name of the canton.

There was much debate over the device for the canton. Some of the founding members were adamant about it having cockroaches, that most indomitable of local fauna, on it. Others were grossed out by the idea. The current registered device is "Sable, a german beetle dismembered within a laurel wreath and on a chief embattled argent, a pomme."

Being located in the county of New York (the island of Manhattan), few full-size, and no camping events have ever occurred there. Possibly the largest event was the "May Games" event held in Central Park, with the feast held at the West Side YMCA. The group does many demos for schools, and has had a presence at the [[Fort Tryon Park Medieval Festival]] for several years. From 1992-2005 the weekday fighter practices were held in Union Square, and many news organizations, TV stations, and independent journalists, photographers, and videographers have acquired words, pictures, and footage of SCA members and SCA fighting there.
