It came in two basic flavours: the Spanish, or conical farthingale, and the wheel farthingale, sometimes called the English farthingale.

The Spanish farthingale is probably easier to construct, with as few as three hoops of varying sizes inserted in a stitched casing on the petticoat.
The wheel farthingale is a more complex garment to construct effectively since the intention seems to be to make the skirt stand out horizontally from the waist before dropping precipitately to floor length. The images of the period aren't particularly helpful in determining the shape of the wheel farthingale but practicality (did the Elizabethans ever bother about that?) would suggest that the supporting structure should be more elliptical than circular.

Bow (musical instrument accessory)
Some stringed instruments may be played by stroking a bow across the strings, rather than plucking the strings. The bow of a musical instrument is typically strung with horsehair (light hair for treble strings or dark hair for bass strings) obtained from the horse's tail. To increase the friction of the hair the bow is rubbed with rosin before use. Period bows were convex in form unlike the concave bow introduced by Tourte.

Fire and Steel Dark Age Re-Enactment Society is an Australian re-enactment society based in Newcastle, NSW re-enacting societies and cultures based in Western Europe during the Dark Ages.

History
The group began as an alternative to the SCA in the Newcastle area primarily to fight with more accurate weapons, and armour in around 1989. Some of Fire and Steel's early membership were ex-SCA or still played with the same. Over time the contact lessened to the point that new members of both clubs had not heard of the other.

Fire and Steel suffered from the early re-enactment "Splitters Disease", splitting once with a number of members leaving to join the Huscarls and again to form Samildanach in the early nineties. Since then, Fire and Steel has remained active and has come to pursue a very anti-expansionist policy.

Fire and Steel once enjoyed a kind of rivalry with The Huscarls but this has since dissipated. Recently a joint Fire and Steel/Huscarl effort has brought archery into the beginnings of general melee at NEMAS' Easter Gathering.

Fire and Steel attend many re-enactor based events in Australia, but are less likely to put on shows for the public.

Activities
Its members are more living history orientated than some, but combat remains an oft enjoyed activity. Fire and Steel like to consider themselves with some humour, but take their re-enactment seriously.

Individual members enjoy:
*arrowmaking and fletching
*shoemaking and other leatherwork
*woodwork
*metalwork
*research
*weaving
*jewellerymaking

Relatively recently, Fire and Steel have added a number of sub-groups to their society.

They include:
*Kingmakers - 15th century soldiers and men at arms as might have been found under the command of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (The Kingmaker) during the Wars of the Roses.
*Colonnell Manus O'Cahan's Regimente of Foote - 17th century Irish soldiers fighting for the Marquis of Montrose during the first English Civil War.

Before the fifteenth century
With the establishment of the Benedictine Rule in 480 it seems fairly safe to state that the Christian faith, particularly as taught by the Catholic church, was becoming the most widely-held belief across Europe. The Catholic church would maintain its supremacy as the spiritual authority until the monk, Martin Luther, rebelled against practices and teachings which he believed were not in agreement with biblical doctrine.

The church masses were conducted in latin, a language not known to the common people, who relied on the priests to provide spiritual counsel. The majority of peasant folk and less well-educated people probably believed a mixture of Christian doctrine and older pre-Christian ideas.

New beginnings
During the thirteenth century thinking men began exploring the written knowledge that had been preserved in monastic libraries, but which had not been actively disseminated. One of the goals of these intellectual explorers seems to have been to rediscover the culture of the classical, pre-Christian period, perhaps in search of something that they believed had been lost or suppressed by the church.

In the visual arts, the painter Giotto Bondone worked to develop a more natural style of visual representation than the stylised images which had become the norm.

As the intellectual climate of Europe changed, fuelled by the development of printing with movable type and a printing press, Martin Luther worked to make available translations in the language of his own people, the Germans, of the Bible, the mass and other texts for doctrinal instruction.

With the spread of the reformatory ideas promoted by Luther, a new movement of protestation against the Catholic church became established. Fundamental principles of the protestant movement included rejection of papal authority, that all Christian believers have direct communion with God obviating the need for an intermediate priesthood, and that a Christian believer is absolved from sin by belief without the need for post-mortem purification in purgatory.

Much of the earliest written music that still exists today was for plainchant. With time it became more common to record secular music as well as sacred. The chansonniers of the troubadours are important examples of period secular music. As it became more prestigious to own books with ornate illumination written music started becoming works of art.

With the advent of the Gutenberg press it was only a short time before music started to be printed. Part books were often printed in sets of four to six, where each book contained the same songs but for a different vocal part.

Restrictive licensing in England meant that printing there was almost exclusively done by William Byrd. However in 1597 lute scores in movable type started to be printed, and these form the basis of most of what we know about the so-called English lute school.

Period sheet music is, as one would expect, now in the public domain (though modern edited versions of songs may not be). There are several projects that aim to archive public domain sheet music, one of which is Mutopia.
abc notation is a text-only way of notating music. It has the advantage of being very compact, making it easy to share music by email and other text-based media, and of being human-readable with a little practice. There is also a strong software base to provide conversion to conventional western musical notation and MIDI renderings.
