'''Shoes''' are the item of [[clothing|costume]] given the least amount of effort by most people in the [[SCA]].

There were many types of footwear worn in [[period]], with different types of construction. For people wearing outfits from before about 1500 what we call 'Turned Shoes' were the most commonly worn, especially among the [[social class]]es generally presented by the SCA. For people wearing outfits set after 1500, the most commonly worn sort of shoe was what we today call 'Welted Shoes'.

''Turned shoes'' were single-sole shoes that to modern sensibilities often seem like slippers or moccasins, and are therefore dismissed. They were made inside out, then turned right-side out. These were frequently made on a last (or a specially carved wooden form), especially after the [[13th century|1200s]], although a last is not always required. Some later [[period]] shoes were given added outer soles that helped them last longer.

''Welted shoes'' were made in a more modern fashion, right-side out, on a last. Separate raised heels are not found until after 1600 (except in some rare occurrences regarding carved wooden or [[cork]] soles in the [[16th century]]).

Shoemakers (or Cordwainers) and Cobblers are not the same thing. Shoemakers were required to work in new leather, while Cobblers were required to work in old, used leather. There were serious class distinctions between the two.

Overshoes called [[patten]]s were made of wood with a leather strap or leather and cork (somewhat like a modern Berkeinstock).

The [[English]] term "Cobbler" and [[German]] name "Schubach" both mean "repairer of shoes".

:Alvia as such never existed, and, in due course, will come off here. It was "invented" as a Far Isles plot device. I offered to flesh it out, did so, and found that the people who'd started it had forgotten saying I could, and thought someone had run with the idea and founded it. However, the FI have stuck with it and (for those who don't know the *truth*) I don't want to spoil the illusion that it might be Out There Somewhere. It's here short-term simply for that reason (and because I built the p*gg*ng web-site and I'm proud(-ish) of it. Thank you for bothering to look at it. It will also die eventually, but I have three more heraldic devices to put on, and several Guilds yet to do. No, merely writing as someone whose ancestors were probably at least indirectly responsible for the annihilation of African civilization. We will certainly have benefited from it, given that without it there would be no British Empire, just a muddy island occasionally conquered by the [[France|French]].
==User Status==

You have just been upgraded to sysop level. As you did not ask for this you will be relieved to know that this status comes with no obligations. It does however allow you to do a number of things such as edit the Main Page, and block spammers. To block spammers go to the Recent Changes page, where the block option will come up for any user that has not logged in (ie, they are an IP address). If they have logged in, you can block them by going to Special pages, scrolling to the bottom, clicking on Block User and typing in their name.

There are a couple of other minor things you can do, including protecting pages, but there is only one page where it was felt that was necessary, so it's not a commonly used power.

If you have any further questions, just put them up here. In part this is our way of saying both that we trust you, and we appreciate your efforts on the wiki. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 08:54, 27 May 2005 (CDT)
==England==

I have edited the [[England]] page with a view to creating links useful to those with English personae. With this in mind I have attempted to create pages for distinct eras, e.g. [[Anglo-Saxon England]]. I am not totally happy with the way that I have grouped the eras (I think an ''Angevin England'' page might be a good idea), but my English history is not good enough for me to do this with any confidence. Could you take a look at it for me and group the eras into what you think is useful from a cultural point of view?

not my question, but I'm not convinced by your middle eras. I guess i think more in terms of archeology than history. 1066 is a clear change, but changes such as gaining anjevin kings didn't really change the overall society.
*perhaps: Roman England/brittain, Anglo saxon england, anglo-norman england, medieval england
Weather medeival england starts in 1155 or sometime later, is a bit to argue.
=== sca.org.au documentation ===

Just wondering whether cunnan might be a useful place to store the documentation that I have started to put together for the databases and stuff on sca.org.au? This includes the new registry & groups database, and the events database (currently mentioned on the Arrowsreach wiki, but plan to start coding on it soon).

Specifically, neither the FAQ nor the policy document says what sort of articles are OK to put on Cunnan. The front page says it's a medieval & renaissance wiki with an SCA slant but that doesn't really cover it in my opinion. The SCA covers lots of areas, and there probably could be a lot of stuff added here about SCA administration, etc, but it isn't really related to the middle ages or renaissance.

Also, a side note, sca.org.au is going to get an OS upgrade sometime during October. That will mean things like a new PHP version, a new version of Apache (from 1.3 to 2.0) etc. Keep an eye on the site mailing list for annoucements.

[[User:Del|Del]]

: My view is that this is a beginner's encyclopaedia to the [[Middle Ages]]. It is being written with the knowledge that [[recreationist]]s are the main users. A decision had obviously been made in the past that the pages were allowed to relate the historical data specifically to how the [[SCA]] is played. This has been expanded by writers (like me) into pages that are specifically on how the SCA runs (cf. [[Board of Directors]] etc). I helped here to reduce the ambiguity of SCA jargon between branches and help define the roles of [[officer]]s etc for those outside the offices. However, I still feel that the main purpose of [[Cunnan]] should be basic historical information. While it could be used as an SCA database, that should not swamp the rest of the system. This is especially important if the SCA stuff was just relating to one [[Kingdom]], not the SCA as a whole. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 14:53, 2 Aug 2004 (EST)

:I think general SCA information would be no problem but Kingdom specific info would only clutter things up, IMO. There are enough people asking why we do SCA and general medieval info as it is. Maybe we should consider forking into two wikis eventually (I think it'll be a long time before this is actually needed though) - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 16:01, 8 Aug 2004 (EST)

::I wouldn't mind sca lochac info, if it was kept very seperate with the intention of forking off the info in the long term. Say we don't add many links to that information? and all pages keep a certain phrase in the title or category, so they can be easily seen as a bunch and moved. I'd rather see more information on the web than lack of information for lack of venue. Specific things I'd want to see with such info would be a cut and paste top of page explaination suitable for a beginner - by the way of "if you are new to medieval reenactment, or from outside [Lochac] you probably didn't mean to come here, this contains a lot of boring detailed information about...." Of course this is one opinion amoungst many, and I think I've already been outvoted.
And one way to avoid swamping with sca pages could be to ask anyone who wants to bring in a lot of sca data if they could help bring in more medeival data through recruiting writers of writing material themselves?
Also to remember that the wiki is not suitable for material that must remain unaltered.
[[User:Tiff|Tiff]]

:: What if articles specific to the SCA all started with "SCA:"? So [[Lady]] would be about the title, role, life, and reenactment of a Lady in period. And [[SCA:Lady]] would be about our use of it for a woman who has received an [[SCA:Award of Arms]]. [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]] 04:35, 7 Dec 2004 (EST)

As for articles specific to the sca starting with sca:
*would this create sorting problems in the index?
*Would people remember to link between the sca and medeival articles? That's a lot more links to create, and much more difficult for the beginner to navigate.
*In the short term I think you can see the solution we've applied to a number of articles is to have subheadings "ladies in medeival times" and "ladies in the sca". I think this is working at least moderatedly well, and enables us to have other headings to cover practises of other groups "ladies in the adrian empire" "ladies in medieval middle east".
*perhaps we should be finding articles which only cover sca topics and adding a "in the sca" subheading to them, even though they are words used only in the sca?
*starting articles with sca would make it easier to fork later. Do we want to, or is it the information about how to relate with ing the sca that makes us valuable? Could we just expand and become and encyclopedia that offers information in the general as well as specific for differnt groups?

just food for thought...
[[User:Tiff|Tiff]]

:It wouldn't create ''technical'' problems with the index but things that look like name-spaces (cunnan:, help:, etc) but which aren't, should be avoided. A better idea would be to use [[some article (SCA)]] as this gets some special handling from the software and matches other wikis using the same software (this is the method the Wikipedia uses for disambiguation.) Personally I think that separate sections within the one article are fine as long as the article is fairly short. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 07:45, 8 Dec 2004 (EST)
*The bans only work if they keep the same IP address.
Hi all,

Here's what's happened and why:

* Some time back in August I noted that cunnan was placing somewhat of a strain on sca.org.au (volta). I didn't bother doing anything at the time because I was heading off to Pennsic.
* In early October I had a major project happening on volta due to a big government tender that was due. volta is also my main work server so I needed to move cunnan. I set up a temporary machine at my office and moved cunnan to it, this was what caused the site address to change (to cunnan.sca.org.au) because it was no longer on the same machine as the rest of www.sca.org.au. Unfortunately this was only ever going to be a temporary thing because the machine I moved it to (galliard) is a "project" server used for software development work and testing. Also galliard is on a fairly low speed link -- 512K/512K whereas volta is on a 10Mb link.
* Last week I moved it again, to a server that I lease in the USA. It's a server (cascarda) that I use for US based clients and has a 100Mb link but bandwidth over there is much cheaper. It also has more memory (1GB) and CPU (3GHz) than volta (256/600MHz). There it's going to stay I'm afraid -- cunnan has become a victim of its own success and it's no longer economical for me to provide sufficient grunt for it to run or bandwidth for all of its traffic in Australia.

So the machine is now in a different time zone -- US "Central Standard Time" (CST) which is 6 hours behind GMT, or 16 hours behind Australian Eastern Standard time, or 17 hours behind Sydney/Melbourne summer time. Of course it will also have daylight savings at a different time of the year.

I don't know much about the wikipedia code or why its dates are out, but I assume that if it was set up on the assumption it was running on Australian EST (GMT+10) it now needs to be told it's running at CST or GMT-6 instead.

Yes, all of my servers are named after [[Renaissance Dance]]s.

=== Spam filtering madness ===
For the past few days all edits were being stopped by the spam filter because of an extra bracket in the spam regex. I've fixed the problem now and would like to apologise for not having tested the wiki more thoroughly after I made the changes.

Things should be back to normal now.
=== sca.org.au documentation ===

=== Spam filtering madness ===
For the past few days all edits were being stopped by the spam filter because of an extra bracket in the spam regex. I've fixed the problem now and would like to apologise for not having tested the wiki more thoroughly after I made the changes.

Things should be back to normal now.
=== sca.org.au documentation ===

=== Another upgrade ===

:The upgrade is now complete. I apologize for the abruptness of the upgrade but there was a problem with the old software (I would have had to reinstall it or install this newer version). The new interface can be customized and we will have category support again.

:As always you should report any problems here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 18:14, 8 Jun 2004 (EST)
=== Information taken from Wikipedia ===
I've noticed that Cunnan is listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copies_of_Wikipedia_content_%28low_degree_of_compliance%29 (under SCA wiki). I think that we are listed on the wrong page since we meet the criteria for moderate compliance but that is beside the point. We really should do something about this when we come across articles of our that are copied from the Wikipedia. Just adding "Some of this articles content were taken from the Wikipedia article at ''http://whateverurl''" would be sufficient. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)
=== re/moving misspelt page titles ===

Hi,
I have noticed that there is a page for Pavillions. This is a misspelling of Pavilions and while I have corrected all the words inside the page, I don't know how to move the filename. The only way I know is to make a new Pavilions page and redirect Pavillions to it but I am not happy to do this.

Please advise,

Cian, the spelling pedant.

:If you are logged in (which you seem to be). You can move a page by clicking the "move" link. It should be along the top of the article (if you are using the new design) or in the left hand set of menus (if you are using the old design). You'll be asked where to move the page to and the old version will be turned into a redirect. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] (PS writing <nowiki>~~~</nowiki> will automatically sign your name on talk pages)

[[User:Del|Del]] 22:24, 14 Nov 2004 (EST)

=== Spam filtering madness ===
For the past few days all edits were being stopped by the spam filter because of an extra bracket in the spam regex. I've fixed the problem now and would like to apologise for not having tested the wiki more thoroughly after I made the changes.

Things should be back to normal now.

My thanks go out to [[User:Tiff|Tiff]] for pointing out my error.
That be of free-born blood:
I shall you tell of a good yeoman,
His name was Robin Hood.
::::(start of [[Lyttle Geste of Robyn Hood]]).

'''Robin Hood''' is the lead character of a series of [[mythology|folktales]] first printed in the [[15th century]] and is still appearing in various media to this day. His story has developed over the years (like that of [[King Arthur]]) and it is not clear when it might have originated.

==The early tales of Robin Hood==

Copies have been found of 4 tales relating to Robin Hood. They portayed him as an outlaw who assisted a [[knight]], killed Guy of Gisborne, did [[archery]], was the enemy of the [[Sheriff]] of Nottingham, and robbed a [[bishop]] but never mentioned anything about giving to the poor, nor was he necessarily a [[noble]]. The only [[king]] mentioned is a King [[English Monarchs|Edward]].

*[[Robin Hood and the Monk]] (c1450)
*[[Robin Hood and the Sheriff]] (1475)
*[[Robin Hood and the Potter]] (1500)
*[[Lyttle Geste of Robyn Hood|Lyttle Geste of Robyn Hood and his meyne]] (1508)

==The development of Robin Hood==

The earliest reference that is normally related Robin Hood was a [[France|French]] verse about "Robin and Marion" but its connection to the tales does not go beyond the romance of two people who have the same name as two charcters of the modern tales.

Robin and Marion as the [[May Queen]] would later be an important part of [[May Day]] celebrations and dances.

==Who was Robin Hood?==

There is no clear indication whether there ever was a Robin Hood who was an outlaw, a knight or anything like the character in the tales. Likewise, historians are still arguing over where exactly his headquarters were located.

JakeVortex: /* Borrow what you do not have, and be honorable about returning it. */

You may hear people saying that the SCA is an expensive hobby. That can be true, but it can also be a great hobby to enjoy on a budget. Many people are poor students, with low end jobs, some fabric remnants, a basket, and perhaps a wooden cup when they start out in the SCA. Yet they still manage to participate. What've you got? I bet you can make it go farther than you think ;)

== Bargain hunt! ==
*If you look, you can find all kinds of things for very very little.
*Haunt sale sections and charity/op/thrift shops for things you need, like used wooden bowls and baskets.
*Early on, you can get away with spending relatively little on garb and [[feasting gear]].
*Many people on a budget recycle old fabric and try to buy fabric when they have a little extra cash.
*Save up and buy the reference books you cannot live without, or spend spare time in your local library.

== Pack a picnic. Really.==
*A good low-cost way to feed oneself is to bring simple food with you to events - bread, cheese, apples.

== Barter your time and skills for room/board with established households. ==
*One can often trade work for food (wash dishes for dinners at camping events, for example)
*Bake bread (which is fairly simple and inexpensive to do, but is very time-costly) or make some other dish as your contribution to your groups food for the weekend.
*Ask friends to let you 'room' with them in their spacious pavilion or large tent until you can afford a tent of your own.
*Get rides with friends to events, in exchange for gas/petrol money.
*Ask if you might be able to attend the feast as a server or kitchen help at discount prices due to finacial hardship. Be prepared to do the work you sign up to fairly and well.
*if the event steward offers discounts for finacial hardship,or you think they might be able to, ask well in advance, don't leave it until the last minute.

== Use your time instead of your money.==
*Make your own simple jewelry, and keep an eye out for medieval looking things in unexpected places.
*Make your own garb from bargain-priced or recycled cloth.
*Go to libraries after class or work and research there.
*Save things that will be useful in making reasonably period looking other things.
*Spend time doing it (whatever 'it' is) yourself, if you can. Nearly all of your kit can be reasonably authentic (or at least reasonably medievaloid), if you take the time to try.
*If you discover a talent for a craft, trade what you make for other goods or favours. People often prefer trade to paying you money - you'll get better deals. Sometimes your patron may even pay for good materials if you have the time to provide manpower.

== Dress simply and comfortably to start with.==
*Simple garb is often cheaper and easier to sew when you are just starting out.
*Patterns and instructions are easily available on the web.
*It's very easy to be authentic with an undertunic, a tunic, trews, and a cloak, or an undergown, overgown, veil and a cloak.
*you can make a small wardrobe of three or four pieces and layer them appropriately to the weather for comfort.
*Nearly all the most long-lasting starter garb is 'simple'. You may find you like it that way.
*Remember that, in period, people usually only had a few sets of outer clothes and lots of underclothes. Don't fall for the modern "must have a new outfit for each event" mindset!
*A cloak can just be a blanket pinned at the shoulder. Pin carefully to leave no holes and it can be returned to the bed later.
*layered tunics are often warmer than a cloak on a windy day. Modern thermal underclothes can add warmth if they don't show.

== Borrow what you do not have, and be honorable about returning it.==
*"[[Oldtimers]]" often have assembled a large amount of clothing and gear over the years and have things to loan to new people starting out. Ask who is willing to take you under ther wing.
*Often you can borrow garb and sometimes other things from your group. Talk to your local [[hospitaller]].
*If your local hospitaller has no clothing in your size, they may be willing to find some fabric for you to make up into clothing and let you be the first person to wear it, if you turn it inot clothing.

== Be willing to learn and willing to share what skills you already possess. ==
*Ask where to shop and share your own thrifty tricks and techniques
*Teach others how to do things you already do, like sewing, dancing, juggling or singing.

== Be social!==
*This is a social activity, and often it's one's friends who take you to the first event. Don't be afraid to ask them for help if you want to do this more often!

===Heraldic falcons===
Falcons are used as [[charge]]s in [[heraldry]]. Unlike [[eagle]]s, they are normally portrayed side-on with their wings [[close]]d. They also have smooth neck compared to an eagle's ruff. It is also common to seea heraldic falcon with [[jess]]es and [[bell]]s attached to its legs, which can be described as (surprise surprise) "a falcon jessed and belled". However, this is not always included in the blazon. A heraldic falcon can also be [[hood]]ed and if it is portayed standing on its prey it is "[[trussed]]" or "preying upon PREYNAME". Sometimes the same basic charge will be blazoned as some other small bird of prey (e.g. a [[hawk]]), but in the [[SCA]] they would all be regarded the same type of bird.

The eagle was the symbol of Imperial [[Rome]], and appeared on a lot of royal [[heraldry]] in Central and Eastern Europe, much as the [[lion]] was used in Western Europe. It is normally blazoned [[displayed]], having its wings spread and its head to the side.

JakeVortex: a rough start

'''The English long assize''' of [[chess]] was played in England from the 14th century through the beginning of the 16th century, when it was displaced by [[mad queen chess]]. This is very similar to the Fench long assize that was played on the contenent.

This form of chess evolved from the earlier medieval chess which was essentially the same as the Persian game of [[Shatranj]].

Each descendant has modified the ancient rules in a different way, but for simplicity only the differences with modern chess will be listed.

*[[Wikipedia:Bishop (shatranj)|Bishops]] move exactly two squares diagonally, jumping over the intervening square. Note that the four bishops each could reach only one fourth of the squares on the board, and because their circuits were disjoint, could never capture one another.
*The [[Wikipedia:Queen (shatranj)|queen]] moved exactly one square diagonally. This made it a rather weak piece.
* As in modern chess, [[Wikipedia:Pawn (chess)|pawns]] but the double opening move is actually a leap. You cannot capture with a leap.
*Pawns which reached the eighth rank were promoted, but only to a queen.
* The first move of the [[Wikipedia:King (chess|king)]] was allowed to be a King's leap if the king had not moved, is not in check, and does not move through check, the king may leap to any square two squares away (i.e., any square he could move to in two moves on an empty board). You cannot capture with a leap.
* The first move of the [[Wikipedia:Queen (chess)|queen]] was allowed to be a Queen's leap if the queen had not moved, and does not move through check, the queen may leap to any same colored square two squares away (i.e., any square she could move to in two moves on an empty board). This leap is available to the first move of a promoted pawn. You cannot capture with a leap.
*Castling was not allowed. See the rules for the King's leap for the earlier precursor to castling.
*Stalemating the opposing king resulted in a loss for the player delivering stalemate.
*Capturing all one's opponent's pieces apart from the king (''baring the king'') was a win, unless your opponent could capture your last piece on their next move, when it is a draw.

The SCA is all about having fun, [[dress]]ing up, [[fighting|beating up your friends]], [[feast|eating unhealthy food]], making forts and [[castle]]s... just like you did when you were 6 years old. Sure, you're all adults, and the game is a little more advanced and now involves a whole bunch of legalities, but.. it's still just a game.

'''Elizabeth I''' (September 7, 1533 - March 24, 1603) was Queen of England (reigned November 17, 1558 - March 24, 1603) and the last [[Tudor]] ruler. Elizabeth, sometimes called "The Virgin Queen", ruled a religiously divided England at the end of the [[16th century]]. She is often considered one of the greatest British monarchs as she presided over an immense flourishing of culture and economics, and has been voted the "greatest Briton" of all time. The period of her reign is now known as the [[Elizabethan]] era of British history.

This period, the [[Wikipedia: Elizabethan era|Elizabethan era]], was an important one for the development of English culture. Literature, particularly [[poetry]] and drama, enjoyed a golden age; and exploration of other continents, including the Americas, began in earnest. Indeed, the queen herself became noted as a poet and classical translator, personally writing the first English translations of [http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace Horace]'s ''Art of Poetry'' and Margueritte de Navarre's somewhat more earthy [[The Heptameron]].

Her [[coronation]] marked the transition in fashion from [[Tudor clothing]] to [[Elizabethan clothing]].

Many [[name]]s (and spellings) are associated with Elizabeth: Elisabeth, Oriana, and Gloriana.
Her death effectively marks the end of [[SCA]] [[period]].

=== Enhanced special pages links ===
It is now possible to link to specific cases of the special pages. Eg <nowiki>[[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]]</nowiki> will create [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]], a list of all pages that link to the Heraldry article. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] ([[Special:Contributions/Tobin|See my contributions]], another example of the enhanced special page links ;-)

=== RFEs ===

Two enhancements I'd like to see:

* A piece of javascript to place the cursor into the search box on entering the main frame. It would be a few liners in the main template. I'll see if I can dig out the code and paste it here.
* A search for links type page where I can find what links to a certain article without creating the article. e.g. I've written a bunch of pages with links to, say, lollard, lollardry, lollardy, lollards, etc, and I want to find them all in turn if I have to but fix the links so I only create one "lollard" page.

=== Finding a specific users contributions ===
I was trying to find an anton's first news headlines article, and anyway i realised I couldn't work out how to view a list of anton's contributions. I'm not fussed if you decide to keep this private, but I believe you've been running under the idea that anyone could *easily* find out what annother contributor has been editting. New software issue? Lack of Links ot help me? i don't know - tell me.
And I'm still trying to that article...
[[User:Tiff|Tiff]]
:At the bottom of every user page is a "User contributions" link. You can also link to these like so: <nowiki>[[Special:Contributions/Some user name]]</nowiki> e.g. [[Special:Contributions/Tiff]]. Anton's contributions can be found at [[Special:Contributions/Anton]] (a few of his edits have been made when he wasn't logged in these can be found at [[Special:Contributions/210.9.142.25]]. Remember though that edits made by someone who is not logged in could actually have been made by anyone, we shouldn't be quick to assume who an anonymous user is). Anyway, Anton's page of sample headlines can be found at [[Cunnan:Period headline news]] (it wont show up when you search unless you specify that the software should look in the "Cunnan:" namespace. This option appears at the bottom of the search results page). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Footnotes. ===

I just noticed a nice way of handling footnotes on the Wikipedia. It is not only possible to link to headings on another page. It is also possible to link to a heading withing the current page e.g <nowiki>[[#Footnote|1]]</nowiki> is translated into a "swish" looking footnote link[[#Footnote|1]] (<--- there it is). If people would like to use this style of footnotes then it might be best to use symbols not numbers as the link text (or an abbreviation of the reference name, etc). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 21:16, 15 Dec 2003 (EST)

==== Footnote ====
This is where the footnote link links to. Nice isn't it?

=== Lochac-centrism? ===

I realise that Cunnan is hosted by and mostly maintained by folks from Lochac. My question is, is there an active intent to make the information on it Lochac-centric, or would you like the information to be more widely applicable?

To give an example of what I mean: take a look at [[non-combatant]], and read it while keeping in mind that most [[Kingdoms]] have completely different rules for light armour and suchlike. The information given is regionally specific but is not identified as such.

Should it be identified as such? Would you appreciate broader perspectives? Or, if this is intended as a largely Lochacian resource, would it be a good idea to put a prominent notice somewhere informing visitors of this fact?

(ex-Lochac, now in [[Ealdormere]])

Just one voice of many, but..
Personally I'd like to see the widest possible audience for this wiki, with the focus being simply a consequence of the users. So I like lochac and sca specific info, but I prefer giving a general introduction, then saying "in lochac...." or having subsections of articles eg "favours in the sca" after "medieval favours"
Sometimes I think articles will be entirely in a subsection eg I think the persona article could be given the subtitle "personas in the sca", enabling other types of personas to be added if anyone comes across them. But since we've labelled this as a sca wiki I'm not so fussy about that as I sound.
And finally, yes you are one of the perfect people to help label the wiki thusly - you know what we are talking about when we slip in Lochac centric stuff, and also know which bits are done differently elsewhere (which we often don't).
[[User:Tiff|Tiff]]

:I'd think it would be very nice to give the wiki a more general, non-lochac centric feel. Part of this will mean trying to attract more contributors from other kingdoms. If you want to edit something to make it more general then go right ahead! There is no reason for us not to try and cover the entire of the SCA, wiki isn't paper. We can, and should, be as comprehensive as possible! :-)

:Much of the Lochac bent that articles have is obviously the result of the people doing the editing (some of the old, old articles still have a [[College of St Monica|St. Monican]] feel to them.) We should expand the article on [[cunnan]] to explain how we got where we are today. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

::I added a [[Cunnan::Lochac-centrism]] page to organize clean up, and proposed some boiler plate for pages that need attention. ~ [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]]

::I moved the page to [[Cunnan:Regional point of view]] (or [[RPOV]]) since I am just as apt to write something An Tir-centric. ~ [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]]

=== Redaction Project ===
In case someone hasn't already noticed I've imported all the recipes from the [[Forme of Cury]] into Cunnan. They're useful on their own but they would be aven better with redactions! To help make this happen I've written a set of [[Cunnan:Redaction project instructions|Redaction project instructions]] and have cleaned up [[Cunnan:Recipes from the Forme of Cury|Recipes from the Forme of Cury]] to help identify redacted/unredacted recipes. Both pages need to be examined by other users

I've spoken to a few people in [[Krae Glas]] and they are (were?) interested in this project so I was planning on testing the instructions/format on the group there before I started announcing this on various mailing lists. Of course, since this is in the wiki anyone is welcome to start now and recruit others (I just wanted to test things out first).

So, have I missed anything obvious in the instructions? Can anyone think of a better way to handle this? - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Interwiki links ===
The wiki software provides an easy, wiki style, way to link to other sites. For example <nowiki>[[Google:Cunnan]]</nowiki> creates [[Google:Cunnan]]. The list of sites that can be linked to in this way is something that I can easily change if people want me to.

I think it would be useful for us to compile a list of sites that it would be nice for us to be able to link to. Group websites and archives. I'm not keen on the idea of individual's sites but I'm not against them either.

Do people think that this is important enough for us to bother compiling a list? - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

: This is great! It seems to already support en.wikipedia.org. It would be great to have a list of what all was supported. Be nice to have other related wikis like wiktionary.org and elizabethangeek. ~ [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]] 07:12, 13 Jan 2004 (EST)

Henry Tudor's claim to the English throne was tenuous to say the least, but when he defeated [[Wikipedia:Richard III of England|Richard III]] at the [[Wikipedia:Battle of Bosworth|Battle of Bosworth]] fields nobody was going to gainsay him, least of all Richard who had died in the battle.

When he married Elizabeth of York, uniting the Yorkist and Lancastrian houses, the [[war of the roses]] was effectively over. The people were so greatful to Elizabeth that they styled the image of the queen in the deck of cards after her. This is why to this day the average deck of cards carry four Tudor women.

Henry VII decided to strengthen his dynasty's grip on the throne by naming his eldest son Arthur. Arthur died before his father, so his younger brother Henry inherited both Arthur's throne and his wife.

Despite the fact that the Tudors were Welsh, he still persecuted Welsh for not speaking English.

In the 'Henry' line came after the 6th one, but before the 8th.

'''Braid''' generally refers to a woven, long, piece of narrow fabric used for decorative or weight-bearing/strengthening purposes. See also: [[braiding technique]].

Flat cross-section braids were often used for [[belt]]s, [[straps]] or trim for [[edging]] clothing. Circular or square cross-section braids were often used for [[draw-string]]s, [[poynts]], [[lacing]] etc. Very narrow, elliptical or flat-on-one-side braids were used in [[couching]] (see below).

The braid could be made separately and stitched on later, or be made as the clothing is being made (ie made as part of the clothing, stitching it down as you make it). It could be laid down straight across the fabric (eg along the top of a [[stomacher]]), or following seams in the clothing (even concealing them), or laid in decorative loops/patterns (known generally as [[couching]]).

Some braids were also used to add strength to the edges of clothing, for example, to strengthen the seam along an edge full of [[buttonhole]]s to prevent the buttons tearing the fabric.

There are a number of braiding techniques, all producing different forms of braid. The most common (in the [[SCA]]) being:
* [[fingerloop braids]] - produces either flatish, round or couching braids
* [[tablet weaving|tablet woven braids]] - produces flat braids
* [[kumihimo]] - produces circular cross-section braids

'''Tablet-weaving''' (also called card [[weaving]]) is a great way to make sturdy, woven bands of [[braid]]. These bands were used in period for straps, belts, braids for costume, bookmarks and ecclesiastical accoutrement.

The technique involves a set of cards threaded with (usually) four [[thread]]s through the holes in the corners (6 is also known in [[period]]). The end of the threads are held tight and form the [[warp thread|warp]] of the weave. The cards are turned a quarter-turn at a time, with the [[weft thread]] passing through the [[shed (weaving)|shed]] (or gap) between the upper pair of threads and the lower pair. Each card thus twines the four threads around each other and this twine is held in place by the weft. Tablet weaving is an easier form of weaving to start, as it does not require a loom to learn, however a loom will help maintain tension and to get up and down from your weaving easily. You can see some detailed manuscript pictures of period tablet weaving looms at:
http://www.kb.nl/vh-cgi/vhoverview.pl?Iconkeywords=73A354*&iconView=IMAGELIST#

Tablet-weaving is a [[warp faced]] weave, which means that the warp threads are what makes the surface-pattern. This pattern can be fairly complex depending on a several styles of tablet weaving, and the pattern is made up through the effect of:
* threading of the cards (both the direction of threading and also what colours are in each hole)
* turning the cards (forwards, backwards or any combination thereof)
* "twisting" the cards (turning the card on its vertical axis to swap the colour that's on "top")
*Adding a supplemental weft (brocading) to create a pattern
*occasionally embroidery or beads were added to a band to enhance surface decoration

These bands can be extremely decorative (including intricate surface decorations in [[gold thread]] called [[brocade|brocading]]), or intricate double sided patterning such as [[double face weave]] and [[3 and 1 broken twill|3/1 twill]]. These bands were probably the major way of decorating clothes in early [[period]].

Tablet-woven braids are very strong and resist abrasion/wear. They can be (and were) used as [[belt]]s, [[baldric]]s, [[straps]], decorative trim or [[edging]]s etc.

There are many people who can teach the basics of this art, so ask around, as it really helps to have a person to set you on your way.

A great website for the basics is on Phiala's string page: - http://www.stringpage.com/old/basictw.html

Have a look at the other tutorials there, as they go into great depth about how it all works. There is even some great info on how to do some of the advanced stuff like [[3 and 1 broken twill|3/1 broken twill]].
