Having become a [[Kingdom]] in September [[A.S. XXXII]], '''Æthelmearc''' is the fifteenth oldest in the [[Known World]]. Geographically it consists of West Virginia, Western & Central Pennsylvania, and Western & Central New York.

==History==

As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the [[Pennsic War]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Midrealm]]. Eventually, the [http://www.aethelmearc.org/pennsictreaty.shtml Pennsic Treaty] was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and [[Æthelmearc War Practice]], held on the same site as [[Pennsic]].

Æthelmearc is home to [[Myrkfaelinn]], the only Independent [[Dominion]] in the [[SCA]]. The [[Board of Directors]] ruled that they owed [[fealty]] to no [[king]], as their [[charter]] mentioned the then-king of the [[East Kingdom|East]] by name.

The King and Queen of Æthelmearc are chosen biannually in either the [[Spring Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Spring Crown Tourney]], held in May, or the [[Fall Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Fall Crown Tourney]], held in October. They are then crowned some months later at the [[Fall Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Fall Coronation]] in September or the [[Spring Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Spring Coronation]] in April respectively. All entrants in the Crown Tournament must be at least 18 years of age and have been a subject of Æthelmearc for at least one year. The tourney is usually fought as a [[double elimination]] tournament, although the format may be altered if there are 16 or fewer fighters in the list.

The '''Pennsic War''' (sometimes shorted simply to '''Pennsic''') is the largest [[SCA]] [[event]] in the world. Held every August in [[Kingdom of Æthelmearc|Pennsylvania]], [[USA]], it is the [[tradition]]al [[war]] between the East Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom.

Major combatants are the [[East Kingdom]], [[Middle Kingdom]], [[Kingdom of Æthelmearc]] and [[Kingdom of Atlantia]], but every other [[kingdom]] in the [[Known World]] chooses one side or the other. Many kingdoms have traditional alliances to one side or another, others switch every year. Additionally there are numerous [[Households]] that field fighters under thier own flags.

[[A.S. XLVI]] saw the 40th running of the event that started out in a field in Ohio, and now consumes the resources of a small western Pennsylvania town for 3 weekends and the 2 weeks in between.

The Pennsic War 40 official attendance was 11,530 gentles from all corners of the [[Known World]]. Pennsic War 43 also had over 10,300 participants. Pennsic is a definite "must get to one day" for the hardened [[SCAdian]]. Almost all possible activites relatead to the [[SCA]] take place at the event. It's an amazing experience, with literally hundreds of [[collegia]], days on end of [[tourney]] and [[war]] fighting, shopping that will send your credit card screeching for cover and thousands of other SCAdians to meet.

== History ==
The legendary but apocryphal story of the origin of the event is that King [[Cariadoc of the Bow|Cariadoc]] of the Middle sent a declaration of war to the Eastrealm in [[A.S. V]], but nothing ever came of it. In [[A.S. VII]] King Cariadoc of the East (he had moved and won a crown tourney in the interim) found the old declaration of war and promptly accepted, leading an [[army]] of Easterners west across the mountains. The Midrealm defeated them, making Cariadoc the first king in history to declare war on himself and lose. Some versions of the legend include that the loser of the war was to get the lands comprising the [[Barony of the Debatable Lands]] in the area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Being the largest annual SCA event, it has been covered by the mainstream media. There have also been several documentaries made of the event, the largest being [[The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary]] by Duckball Home Video, which covered Pennsic XX.

Many kingdoms have traditional alliances to one side or another, others switch every year. Additionally there are numerous [[Households]] that field fighters under thier own flags.

[[A.S. XLVI]] saw the 40th running of the event that started out in a field in Ohio, and now consumes the resources of a small western Pennsylvania town for 3 weekends and the 2 weeks in between.

The Pennsic War 40 official attendance was 11,530 gentles from all corners of the [[Known World]]. Pennsic War 43 also had over 10,300 participants. Pennsic is a definite "must get to one day" for the hardened [[SCAdian]]. Almost all possible activites relatead to the [[SCA]] take place at the event. It's an amazing experience, with literally hundreds of [[collegia]], days on end of [[tourney]] and [[war]] fighting, shopping that will send your credit card screeching for cover and thousands of other SCAdians to meet.

== History ==
The legendary but apocryphal story of the origin of the event is that King [[Cariadoc of the Bow|Cariadoc]] of the Middle sent a declaration of war to the Eastrealm in [[A.S. V]], but nothing ever came of it. In [[A.S. VII]] King Cariadoc of the East (he had moved and won a crown tourney in the interim) found the old declaration of war and promptly accepted, leading an [[army]] of Easterners west across the mountains. The Midrealm defeated them, making Cariadoc the first king in history to declare war on himself and lose. Some versions of the legend include that the loser of the war was to get the lands comprising the [[Barony of the Debatable Lands]] in the area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Being the largest annual SCA event, it has been covered by the mainstream media. There have also been several documentaries made of the event, the largest being [[The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary]] by Duckball Home Video, which covered Pennsic XX.

Having become a [[Kingdom]] in September [[A.S. XXXII]], '''Æthelmearc''' is the fifteenth oldest in the [[Known World]]. Geographically it consists of West Virginia, Western & Central Pennsylvania, and Western & Central New York.

==History==

As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the [[Pennsic War]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Midrealm]]. Eventually, the [http://www.aethelmearc.org/pennsictreaty.shtml Pennsic Treaty] was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and [[Æthelmearc War Practice]], held on the same site as [[Pennsic]].

Æthelmearc is home to [[Myrkfaelinn]], the only Independent [[Dominion]] in the [[SCA]]. The [[Board of Directors]] ruled that they owed [[fealty]] to no [[king]], as their [[charter]] mentioned the then-king of the [[East Kingdom|East]] by name.

I would make sure that [[Laurel]] redirects to [[Order of the Laurel]] with a disambiguation at the top for [[Laurel Sovereign of Arms]]. One of the pages should mention any historical links to similar ranks/titles in the RL Colleges, e.g. [[Garter King of Arms]], [[Lyons King of Arms]]

We have been getting unknown people adding just one word consisting of 8-10 characters to a range of pages. I believe the choice of characters is random because I don't recognise anything that I would find in any of my dictionaries. So the vandalism is pretty pointless. Has Cunnan evolved so far away from its St Monica/Lochac roots that setting up a section under Kingdom of Lochac to support something like the above (but for Lochac) would be a no-go these days? I refer to Village pump discussions mid-2007 on culling some SCA-specific stuff that was seen mainly as ego-boo.

Or would it be fair enough? A wiki is a very good way to maintain this sort of thing; the question is whether we need to set up a whole new one, or use the resource that already exists, but which may no longer be appropriate. (Or, indeed, whether Cunnan would be open to any Kingdoms which wished to use it so).

** The problem using the sandbox is that the template is primarily used in the Image namespace. If you clickthrough to the Image page listed above then go down to the information section, you can see that it looks odd and cluttered, with bad markup. * The idea with these entries is that they can be accessed either via the herb, or through the book title, so that one can browse the entries as one would a book. [[A.S. XLVI]] saw the 40th running of the event that started out in a field in Ohio, and now consumes the resources of a small western Pennsylvania town for 3 weekends and the 2 weeks in between.

The Pennsic War 40 official attendance was 11,530 gentles from all corners of the [[Known World]]. Pennsic War 43 also had over 10,300 participants. It's an amazing experience, with literally hundreds of [[collegia]], days on end of [[tourney]] and [[war]] fighting, shopping that will send your credit card screeching for cover and thousands of other SCAdians to meet.

As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the [[Pennsic War]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Midrealm]]. Eventually, the [http://www.aethelmearc.org/pennsictreaty.shtml Pennsic Treaty] was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and [[Æthelmearc War Practice]], held on the same site as [[Pennsic]].

Æthelmearc is home to [[Myrkfaelinn]], the only Independent [[Dominion]] in the [[SCA]]. The [[Board of Directors]] ruled that they owed [[fealty]] to no [[king]], as their [[charter]] mentioned the then-king of the [[East Kingdom|East]] by name.

The King and Queen of Æthelmearc are chosen biannually in either the [[Spring Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Spring Crown Tourney]], held in May, or the [[Fall Crown Tourney (Æthelmearc)|Fall Crown Tourney]], held in October. They are then crowned some months later at the [[Fall Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Fall Coronation]] in September or the [[Spring Coronation (Æthelmearc)|Spring Coronation]] in April respectively. All entrants in the Crown Tournament must be at least 18 years of age and have been a subject of Æthelmearc for at least one year. The tourney is usually fought as a [[double elimination]] tournament, although the format may be altered if there are 16 or fewer fighters in the list.

As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the [[Pennsic War]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Midrealm]]. Eventually, the [http://www.aethelmearc.org/pennsictreaty.shtml Pennsic Treaty] was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and [[Æthelmearc War Practice]], held on the same site as [[Pennsic]].

The '''Pennsic War''' (sometimes shorted simply to '''Pennsic''') is the largest [[SCA]] [[event]] in the world. Held every August in [[Kingdom of Æthelmearc|Pennsylvania]], [[USA]], it is the [[tradition]]al [[war]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Middle Kingdom]]. Once, the war was fought over territory (the loser getting [[Barony of the Debatable Lands|Pittsburgh]]) but now it is fought over prestige.

The major combatants are the Midrealm and the East Kingdom, but every other [[kingdom]] in the [[Known World]] chooses one side or the other. Many kingdoms have traditional alliances to one side or another, others switch every year.

[[A.S. XLI]] saw the 35th running of the event that started out in a field in Ohio, and now consumes the resources of a small western Pennsylvania town for 3 weekends and the 2 weeks in between.

The Pennsic War 35 official attendance was 11,298 gentles from all corners of the [[Known World]]. Pennsic War 36 also had over 11,200 participants. Pennsic is a definite "must get to one day" for the hardened [[SCAdian]]. It's an amazing experience, with literally hundreds of [[collegia]], days on end of [[tourney]] and [[war]] fighting, shopping that will send your credit card screeching for cover and thousands of other SCAdians to meet.

== History ==
The history of the Pennsic War is somewhat unique. King [[Cariadoc of the Bow|Cariadoc]] of the Middle sent a declaration of war to the Eastrealm in [[A.S. V]], but nothing ever came of it. In [[A.S. VII]] King Cariadoc of the East (he had moved and won a crown tourney in the interim) found the old declaration of war and promptly accepted, leading an [[army]] of Easterners west across the mountains. The Midrealm defeated them, making Cariadoc the first king in history to declare war on himself and lose.

Being the largest annual SCA event, it has been covered by the mainstream media. There have also been several documentaries made of the event, the largest being [[The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary]] by Duckball Home Video, which covered Pennsic XX.

The '''Pennsic War''' (sometimes shorted simply to '''Pennsic''') is the largest [[SCA]] [[event]] in the world. Held every August in [[Kingdom of Æthelmearc|Pennsylvania]], [[USA]], it is the [[tradition]]al [[war]] between the [[East Kingdom]] and the [[Middle Kingdom]]. Once, the war was fought over territory (the loser getting [[Barony of the Debatable Lands|Pittsburgh]]) but now it is fought over prestige.

The major combatants are the Midrealm and the East Kingdom, but every other [[kingdom]] in the [[Known World]] chooses one side or the other. Many kingdoms have traditional alliances to one side or another, others switch every year.

[[A.S. XLI]] saw the 35th running of the event that started out in a field in Ohio, and now consumes the resources of a small western Pennsylvania town for 3 weekends and the 2 weeks in between.

The Pennsic War 35 official attendance was 11,298 gentles from all corners of the [[Known World]]. Pennsic War 36 also had over 11,200 participants. Pennsic is a definite "must get to one day" for the hardened [[SCAdian]]. It's an amazing experience, with literally hundreds of [[collegia]], days on end of [[tourney]] and [[war]] fighting, shopping that will send your credit card screeching for cover and thousands of other SCAdians to meet.

== History ==
The history of the Pennsic War is somewhat unique. King [[Cariadoc of the Bow|Cariadoc]] of the Middle sent a declaration of war to the Eastrealm in [[A.S. V]], but nothing ever came of it. In [[A.S. VII]] King Cariadoc of the East (he had moved and won a crown tourney in the interim) found the old declaration of war and promptly accepted, leading an [[army]] of Easterners west across the mountains. The Midrealm defeated them, making Cariadoc the first king in history to declare war on himself and lose.

Being the largest annual SCA event, it has been covered by the mainstream media. There have also been several documentaries made of the event, the largest being [[The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary]] by Duckball Home Video, which covered Pennsic XX.

The '''Adrian Empire''' is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the study and [[recreation]] of Western [[Europe]]an culture between the years 1066 and 1603. Its members work to recreate the [[arts]] and skills of this era. They also include other cultures that commonly interacted with the Western Europeans during this time frame. This exciting development means there is now even more rich history, culture, and tradition to explore!

==Participation==
Most local groups meet once per month, although wars can occur two or three times per year. Members dress in authentic (or authentic-looking) [[clothes]] to lend to a genuine feel of the time [[period]]. Non-members are welcome to attend in their normal clothing.

There are four main types of participation:
* '''Combat''' - Adrian Combat consists of four types: [[Shinai]], Renaissance [[Schlager]], Renaissance [[Cut and Thrust]], and Armored. It is the Armored combat which distinguishes Adria from other [[historical reenactment]] groups such as the [[Society for Creative Anachronism|SCA]] (although there are many other so-called "metal weapons" or [[live steel]] groups). It consists of unchoreographed, live combat with real (although blunt) steel weapons, including [[sword]]s, [[mace]]s, battle [[axe]]s, [[spear]]s, and other weapons.

The Adrian Empire is a [[feudal]]-styled [[parliament]]ary [[republic]]. From the top down, every member is directly represented by somebody within the organization. And, unlike modern parliamentary governments such as that of [[England]], the current ruling [[noble]]s ([[Crown]]s) share in the political process.

===Chartered Subdivisions===

The Adrian Empire is composed of the following types of ''chartered subdivisions'', all of whom have a local government, as well as representation on the Imperial government:

* '''The Empire''' - This includes all of the continental [[United States]] and part of [[Canada]], whether or not there are other chartered subdivisions in the region. The Empire is governed by the [[Emperor]] and [[Empress]].

* '''[[Archduchy (Adrian Empire)|Archduchies]]''' - Smaller than kingdoms, these chartered subdivisions have memberships between 50 and 99. They are governed by an [[Archduke]] and/or [[Archduchess]].

The other type of political entity in Adria is called an ''Estate'', which is a non-geographic subdivision. Estates have different names based on size, ranging from the five person ''[[household]]'' up to the 50+ member ''march''. These estates can also be subdivided into other estates (for example, a 15 person [[barony]] can contain three houses). The heads of these estates have a noble title and may vote in their local rule-making body, called a local estates meeting. Large enough estates are considered part of the Estates Royal and may also vote in the Imperial rule-making body, as well as the two most senior estates for a subdivision.

Another type of title and rank available is a [[knighthood]]. There are four paths of knighthood, in ministry (service to the organization), combat, archery, and the arts. Knighthood in the Adrian Empire is awarded following a merit-based system. For each discipline (arts, archery, combat, and ministry), there are certain time and skill milestones that must be met before advancing in rank. There are no restrictions to knighthood based on gender. Only combat (for safety reasons) has any minimum age requirements.

For each classification of knighthood an individual may attain a first, second, and third level knighthood, the title of which changes based on level and area.

While there are no official dogma, canon, or religious beliefs associated with the Church, the organization follows a structure similar to that of the [[Roman Catholic Church]]. The members of the Church of Adria can rise in [[rank]] from being [[Deacon]]s & [[Archdeacon]]s (often called [[priest]]s, brothers, sisters, or fathers) to the rank of [[Bishop]] and [[Archbishop]] before petitioning to become [[Patriarch]]. The Church of Adria's primary purpose within the Empire is to provide the ritual ([[coronation]]s, oaths, etc) that fell under the domain of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe during the medieval time period. The Church of Adria exists for the sole purpose of providing the pomp, circumstance, and presence that the church provided in the [[Middle Ages]] and should not be construed to be either a political or religious organization. Ranks within the church are recognized by courtesy as equivalent to other ranks within the organization and may be accorded similar privileges.
