The Barony of Stormhold is a SCA branch in the Kingdom of Lochac. It covers central, western and northern Melbourne, Australia plus Western Victoria, being the oldest group in the state. The Barony has one Canton. The Canton of Caern Fail covers Ballarat, Bendigo, the Golden Triangle and the Surf Coast. The College of St Bartholomew is based at the University of Melbourne. The Shire of Arrowsreach and the Shire of Krae Glas were formerly cantons of the barony. The Canton of Dubh Thrain is now disbanded.

History
The first Baron and Baroness of Stormhold were Styvyn Longshanks and Rhyllian of Starfire Retreat. Their reign was interrupted when Styvyn and Rhyllian won the Lochac Coronet tournament, and became Prince and Princess of Lochac in A.S. XXIV.

Barons and Baronesses of Stormhold:
# Viscount Styvren Longshanks (KSCA, resigned) and Viscountess Rhyllian of Starfire Retreat, OP
#* Vicar - Morgan ap Idris
# Alain Bartholomieu Lorenz, OP and Viscountess Lucrezia Lorenz
# Sven Stormdriven, OP and Ingibjorg Ambadottir
# Rudolf von der Drau and Nicolette Dufay, OP
# Gwynfor Lwyd, OP and Gwir verch Madog
# Hugh the Little, KSCA and Theresa Cummins
#* Vicar - Mirriam Galbraith, OL
# Rodrigo of Abbotsford, Sara Van Den Hove
# Hanbal al Barbary, Ute von Tangermunde

An interesting note is that until Rodrigo and Sara, none of the Barons and Baronesses, except for Gwynfor and Theresa, were native Melbournians. Styvren was born in New Zealand, Rhyllian is a native of Mildura, Alain was raised near Sheparton, Sven and Lucrezia were from Adelaide, Ingibjorg was from Canberra, as was Hugh, and Rudolf, Nicolette and Gwir are all American. From an SCA standpoint, Rodrigo, Sara, Styvren, Alain, Gwynfor and Theresa started in the SCA in Stormhold, Rhyllian in the Shire of Quimera de Oro (Mildura, Victoria), Sven and Ingibjorg in the Shire/Barony of Innilgard (Adelaide, South Australia), Rudolf and Nicolette in the Barony of Ynys Fawr (Hobart, Tasmania), Gwir in the Barony of Settmour Swamp (New Jersey, USA) and Hugh in Politarchopolis (Canberra, ACT). Hannbal commenced his SCA life in Politarchopolis, and Ute originates from Mansfield, but started or SCA life in Melbourne. Of the Vicars, Morgan started in Stormhold and Mirriam in Innilgard. Alain, Nicolette and Gwynfor served as Seneschal of Stormhold at various times, as did Morgan.

After the sudden departure of the sixth Baron and Baroness, Sir Hugh the Little and Baroness Therasa Commins, during Rowany Festival A.S. XXXIX, Miriam Galbraith was appointed as vicar. On June 24th, A.S. XXXXI Rodrigo and Sara became the seventh Baron and Baroness Stormhold. Both are natives of Melbourne, and both started their SCA careers here. The eighth baron and baroness, Hanbal and Ute, were invested on 3rd July A.S. XLIV.

Annual Events
The most famous annual Stormhold event is the William Marshall tourney and feast, held in early December. Stormhold also holds an annual Winter Feast.

Learning the crafts
Fighting in diverse styles
Fighting in diverse styles covers an huge range of subjects. There is heavy combat (armored combat using rattan weapons), rapier (recreating the Art of Defense with lighter armor and steel or fibreglass period fencing swords and techniques), combat archery (again, lighter armor and using "pull" weight limited bows and crossbows with shafts ending in a rubber blunt to recreate missile combat) and seige weaponry (trebuchets, catapults, Ballistae and the like). You may also see demonstrations of live steel combat at an SCA event from time to time, but the SCA does not partake in this form of combat.

Heavy Fighting:
Roughly, here are what I see as the most common breakdowns of style:

Weapon style - These are very broad categories indeed. The skills and tactics needed to use sword and shield depend on what sort of sword and shield you use. A longish broadsword and small buckler are completely different to use than a shorter sword with a low profile thrusting tip and a large heater are, for example.
- sword and shield
- two-handed weapon
- mass weapon and shield
- pike

School of style (these are just a few that I identify for my purposes. There are undoubtedly many more, and others may categorise styles differently)
Oldcastle
Headless Household
Guildemar/Jade school
Bellatrix
An Tir
Duke Brannos
Duke Patrick
Stahlgeist
Ansteorran scutum

Approach to combat - here are some of the categories that I use to help me "work out" opponents. Most people are predominantly 2 or 3 of these categories in combination (ie Aggressive/speed/long range fighter), but, again, most fighters can also change it up a bit to suit how they feel or their opponent. For example, I think of myself as a Passive, counter-punching, speed based surgical fighter. Having figured out what sort of fighter you are may help determine what weapons styles and fighting styles would suit you, and how best to apply this knowledge to become a successful fighter.

Aggressive
Defensive
Active
Passive
Counter-puncher
Close range
Medium range
Long range
Extreme Range
Surgical
Combination
Speed
Building
Static
Mobile/gumby
Mobile/movement

Who's who?
*People who have earned a rank by being good at something are called Peers collectively, and Laurels, Pelicans, or Knights depending upon what they were good at.
*People who have won the right to rule a territory are called Royal Peers. This includes current rulers (King, Queen, prince, princess) and also former rulers Dukes, Duchess etc)
*Some people are delegated to be the representative of the rulers in an area eg. Baron, Baroness.
*Some people have been rewarded for their past services eg. court baron grant of arms.
*Officers are people who organise things within the Society (Autocrats, Feastocrats, Heralds, Marshals, etc), ,
*Some awards convey a title with them, but they are very few.
*Most of the above groups of people have distinctive items of apparel that they may (or may not) wear which will mark their rank (eg. white belt for knights), and many have specific titles that can be used to refer to them. These are discussed under each entry.
*Alternate titles are sometimes used by the above people to fit in better with the culture they portray (eg Graf for a German Count). Refering to them by the standard English titles given above will not be considered offensive (if you are new, they'll probably be pleased that you even know what rank they have).

Any European military expedition to free the Holy Land from Muslim occupation that was sanctioned by the Western Patriarchy (Roman Church, or Roman Catholics as they are known now). These expeditions occurred during between the 11th century and the 14th century.

The First Crusade was preached by Pope Urban II in 1095.

The Second Crusade was preached by Pope Eugene III in 1145.

The Third Crusade was preached by Pope Gregory VIII in 1187.

The Fourth Crusade was preached in 1198 by Pope Innocent III.

The Fifth Crusade was preached in 1216 by Pope Honorius III.

The Sixth Crusade was the product of Frederick II, Emporer of Germany (Holy Roman Emporer) commencing approximately 1225.

The Seventh, and final major Crusade was the work of King Louis IX of France, and departed Europe in 1248.

The Eighth Crusade finished in 1270, having being fought mainly by mercenary troops as there was little land to offer as enticement.

Other "Crusades" include Peter the Hermit's "People's Crusade" that actually preceded the First Crusade by virtue of setting off and "crusading" against non-Christians in Europe firstly.

The Crusade of 1101 was a dismal failure, and was little more than a second wave of the First Crusade that was poorly co-ordinated and resulted in three major European armies being defeated by Turks.

The Albigensian Crusade, against the Cathars (heretics) of Provence started in 1209.

The crusades had multiple causes - Church reform, increased population in Western Europe, and the growth of the idea of knights as soldiers of the church. The success of the early crusades was due partially to division among the people occupying the Middle East.

Formal education was not a necessity for the overwhelming majority of people throughout much of the period. Far more important than academic learning was maximising the numbers of healthy bodies producing the goods needed to merely survive (primarily food, clothing and shelter). Work as a contributing member of the community commenced practically as soon as one was able to walk and follow simple instructions. Formal education is only able to be afforded in extremely affluent societies.
During period university lectures were, almost always, given in Latin.
